I used a bottle jack handle to hold the strut, eye balled the end of the strut, screwed in the 17mm nut thing with ball on the end until 'click'. The jack handle was just the right diameter :-)

I have tried a couple of known working 2nd hand struts on mine but when I came to fit them they all didn't hold the glass :-( Best buy new

I don't know if you guys use this over there, but we use a thin gauge pipe called EMT for electrical conduit here. The half inch variety is the perfect size to slide over the glass hatch struts.

Took me longer to remove the dried plastic crappy tailgate trim than anything else.

I didn't remove any headliner or 17mm bolts either.

Sooo nice not having to hold up the glass. I almost never open the whole gate, partially to save the wiring at the hinge.

If you search the stabilus part number printed on your shocks, you can find them a lot cheaper.  Here's where I got mine: https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/stabilus/294158

It's odd they list the glass tailgate struts for the E34 but not the main tailgate struts...

Hero - much appreciated. Have just ordered a pair.

Now for the challenge of fitting them. I've recently done the bonnet and main tailgate struts but think those will be a child's play compared to these.

They have them: https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/stabilus/293469  and  https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/stabilus/293470

Though I found those somewhere else (minus the offset brackets on the ends) a lot cheaper. Same way, I took the stabilus part number and searched that rather than the BMW number.
