E34 Fault Codes

Recommended Posts

Hello Listers

Plugged a Peake reader into my (1993 M50 E34 2.5 Petrol) and got;

Codes for -

Ignition Secondary Monitor

Knock Sensor 4-6

and all the coils

I presume one thing is wrong and its showing the others.

Car runs intermittently bad then good etc.

Any clues to pin it down and save monies would be great.

Thanks All

My money is on the knock sensor for pots 4-6. AFIK there is only one lot of monitoring and that will throw code 15. I dont think there is a code for each coil. There is no test for the knock sensors in Bentleys but you might try a simple resistance test. They are the same part no so you could swap them over and see if it then comes up with sensor for 1-3.

Hello All

The mystery deepens.

I have reset the fault codes and got the car to run rough.

Peake reader shows -

OF - ignition Secondary Monitor

17 Coil 4

18 Coil 6

19 Coil 5

32 Coil 1

33 Coil 2

34 Coil 3

But this time no Knock Sensor (45)?

I do not think all the coils are bad!!!!

Any more clues, what is seconday Ignition Monitor?

Cheers All

Just to make life interesting, Peake use a hex system for their codes. But you can translate them into the BMW codes: Take the left digit and multiply by 16 then add the right digit. For letters (A to F) use 10 to 15. So your code OF is BMW code 15 (ignition circuit monitoring) and code 45 is 4 x16 + 5= BMW code 69 (knock sensor 2).

Yours will be DME 3.3.1 for an M50 with vanos but all the codes are here:

I dont believe all your coils are shot either. I'd be going old school and checking your crank and cam sensors for a start. It could be they are the cause but as they are within parameters the ECU isnt clocking a fault. Hope that makes sense

Hi Again

Thanks for the input.

Tested the connector plug for the crank sensor only gives 562 ohms - Bently says 1200 + or - 10%

I presume its shot then?

Unless Bentleys figures are?

Strange if its that, how the car runs then does not run etc?

Cheers

Hello

Ref Crank Position Sensor Resistance test.

It seems several other listers on various BMW forums, say Bentleys have wrong figures and when they have bought a new Crank Sensor its still in the 500's ohms

Bentleys says M50 engine 1280 ohms +/- 10%

Mine is 526 ohms !

Not sure whether to replace or not now?

Or look elsewhere for the fault?

Help!!

Hello

Its me again!!

Tested the camshaft sensor this morning and can get no results at all on pins 1 + 2 or 2+ 3 - All Nil

Except the odd glitch with my tester.

No continuity either - if that means anything?

I presume its shot?

How can the car run intermittently if this is knackered?

How do you replace it? I can see its path is blocked - I think by the Vanos?

Any help - once again gratefully accepted.

Cheers

The cam sensor is a 'Hall effect' one so resistance tests wont really help. Its like a switch that only gets thrown when the pin on the cam comes past it. This video is for a later model but will give you a good idea how to do a test:
