Airbag light staying on for a while - 525i SE

Recommended Posts

I replaced an instrument cluster bulb recently on my 525i (involved removing and refitting the cluster) and now when the car is started, the Airbag light remains on for about a minute. Anyone got any clue why this is, or how to fix it? Would a battery which is low on charge cause this (I have bought a new one but not fitted it yet).

Low battery will have nothing to do with it, my mates done the same after he removed his cluster for some reason.

Cheers George! I have a spare sensor which I got off Ebay for pennies on its way (the one that lives under the rear seat bench), so I might try fitting that when it arrives, and I'll try making sure all the connections at the back of the cluster are tight, although I think the connectors are all of the 'either connected or not' type!

His is perm on though Scott, Marks and my mates

No, mine goes off after a minute too George! That's why I thought it might get through the MOT.

Any joy with this? Mine stays on a while since having the cluster out too...
Nope, still doing it, but it passed it's MOT - not a failure point apparently.

The airbag light is not an MOT testable item.

What you SHOULD do is disconnect the battery before removing the cluster............

Well now I know that, I can do it in the future & achieve... well notalot seeing as I've already ****ed it!

So what's the light-staying-on-for-a-while a symptom of? I'm hoping the airbag'll still work? Not that you can really trust em at 13 years old anyway...

I disconnected my cluster yesterday and plugged it back in. Airbag light is acting fine and i forgot to disconnect the battery. Though i did blow 2 bulbs in the process, the one that lights up the mileometer and the middle main dash iluminating bulb. The right one is dead already so i have just fuel and speed at night lit up....

going to fix it in a bit when i get the steering wheel off.

MOT might not be a worry (I never expected it to be), but it would be quite nice to know what's going on with my airbag system - ie whether it's likely to work in an accident, or just as likely to go off at random...

Have you attempted to fix it? Anyone tried disconnecting the battery for a while, or anything simple like that?!

TBH I couldn't care less about the light being on... I'd just like to know what it means!

Yep, I fixed mine - easy solution really - I sold the car and bought another one!!

Sarcasm apart, I tried disconnecting the battery, and it didn't solve it. Maybe a specialist could reset it or something. It seems to happen when people take out the cluster without disconnecting the battery first.

I don't think it means a damn thing, so long as the light does go off eventually.
