AUDIO OPTIONS FOR E60 520d SE

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am getting my 5 Series on Saturday. I drive a long way every day and need music! The car I am getting has a single disc CD player and has been advertised with 'CD Preparation'.

Can someone please advise on the options available to me please? I understand that the 6 disc changer will cost about £1,000 to be supplied and fitted. What if I bought an iPod? Would that plug into the AUX connection and work straight away?

Any help/advice gratefully received. :D

Many Thanks,

Adam

P.S it's a 2006 model, registered in 03/2006, manuf date = 02/2006

Ok, got the car and it doesn't have the AUX connection.

I think the best bet is an iPod interface. The local dealer wants £165 for the parts and £315 for the labour!

Does anyone know of a cheaper way of doing this or have they got me cornered due to the need for the cars software to be update?

I have the ipod connector, the reason for the cost is they have to program the Idrive. When you have the connection you can see play lists, artists, tracks, albums, and genre so the functionality is slightly richer than a standard aux input, it also recharges your IPOD. I had an old ipod where the screen has broken so I jsut leave it permanently in the car as I can see thew tracks on the idrive screen.

They used to do a retrofit AUX but not so sure now.

If your car is 06 it should be able to play mp3's via the front loader. Try this and see, if it does then you shouldn't need sofware upgrade to connect an ipod.

Mines an 06 plate and wont play MP3 CD's :(

Got a 55 plate - no mp3s playing at the month. Although, it does play burned cds!

This is a relief since my last car (punto hgt) didn't!

I just got two 12inch subs put in the boot I think he just wired them off the back speakers.

The amp is a cool looking chrome one but I got a feeling the bass should be much stronger!

It is bassy but for two 12inches it should be booming!!

Any thoughts!

Thoughts?

Yes - you've overlooked the two 8" sub spaces underneath the front seats! Only the logic 7 systems had these, but the best upgrade for std cars seems to be Earthquake 8" shallow subs which are almost a direct replacement for the 6.5" std woofer and adaptor ring in there at present.

I've done this, with a 400W mono amp running them in parallel - seriously good as the E60 incorporates the door sills as enclosures through the floor pan which means fast and reasonably deep bass is very achieveble and also arrives in the cabin with nothing in the way, and with no time lag effect.

Wow woweee!!!!!

I deffo overlooked that! Didn't know I had them but I looked under there and saw some circular collection of holes on the floor under the seat, no wonder it used top thump under my seat when I played a bassy tune.

Well, that might be my next move then. Is it just a straight swap I.e take out old subs and replace with new ones.

It would be nice to have 2 8inches on top of my rear subs!

Does it have to be a bmw specialist that does this coz I'm thinking the seat has to come off?!? Btw, how much dad it set u back.

Check this

Only specific subs will fit - the SWS-8s were originally developed for the E60/E90 are virtually drop in with a few spacers - bit of an odd shape to be honest.

Looks like the subs are £90 a pop from the UK supplier, they're not common. I imported mine for similar cost from the US last year.

Seats out is easy enough - they're just a pain to manouvre enough to give you space to work without unplugging all the electrics (which i didn't!).

As standard the 6.5"s are not bad, but the 8"s can give a bit more oomph. Gizze's point (he's on this site too) about the quality is pretty spot on too - mine sounds supremely controlled and just right. Still need to stick in front components, just got SPL 4.2s today. Fingers crossed.

Right, the SPL 4.2s are "pretty much" a straight replacement fit once you've trimmed one of plastic bushes on the existing mount bolts down a little. Two corners fit the OEM positioned mounting bolts no problem while the 3rd mounting bolt (the stock speakers have 3 mounting points) just needs a big washer to clamp the other side of the speaker down. A dash of sealant around the edge prior to mounting and hey-presto.

Will get pics tomorrow - sounds good with tweeters now! I also removed the foam backing on the mid speaker covers to aid volume.

The whole door panel is going to need dynamating now, as the E60 has no speaker pod..... disgraceful!!! :D
