Water leaking in my G30

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and I made the newbie mistake of posting in a wrong section. To get more relevant answers, I decided to repost here, I hope it is not against any rules:

My name is Frankie and I'm from the Czech Republic... Sorry if I sometimes struggle with word choices or semantics of my posts...

I just recently bought a G30 from Germany. This car was used as a chauffeur driven car for senators of the German Senate... They get BMW's for really low price, because BMW wants these guys to drive BMW (what else) and they sell them after one year...

It is a beautiful car (Luxury line), has adaptive shocks and adaptive chassis, M brakes, soft close and all the other bells and whistles...

I was driving it home yesterday and noticed one strange thing: there was water dripping down on the carpet on the sides of the center tunnel, looked like it originated in the AC unit... It was dripping on both sides equally. But today it was gone and i was again using the AC today... Yesterday, it was raining, so I assumed it was the rain water getting inside somehow...

I used the search function on this forum and stumbled upon an article, that describes similar water ingress on the F10's... But that water was not dripping on the sides of the tunel, that was going right down under the carpet...

I went to the dealership today, but they seemed to be baffled by this phenomenon... They have allegedly never heard of any water ingress, even on F10's. They said I should bring it in for a full day and they will have a look...

But I am worried, that once they start disassembling anything in the interior, I will soon get squeaks and rattles... And that is something that would completely ruin my experience with BMW...

I also have a 2017 330d and there are some rattling parts in the interior (like the door lock knob or how do you call it in English) and that is also one of the reasons why I'm selling it already and getting something of hopefully higher build quality...

Thank you all for your input!

This is not the same issue that you've read about on the F10. The G30 has a very different water drainage set up and the F10s with this issue are always RHD models. Yours sounds like the condensate pipework is blocked so when the aircon is on, it dries the air and that moisture is not able to exit the car so it is leaking out from the air distribution box behind the dash to the interior of the car.  Note this is just an assumption rather than it being based on any experience of the issue.

Check the Microfilter cover as there is a drain pipe there that may need investigating.

It could just be the drip tray drain is blocked, there would normally be a drip tray under the evaporator.
The G30 is fairly well built, I’ve had door cards off and have no issues with new rattles or squeaks.
The 5s tend to be better quality interiors than the 3s

Well, I was using the AC for the past two days and not a single drop of water...

I will try to pour some water on it and check whether it finds its way inside...

I have also inspected the carpets, and with a closer look, you can see that there are signs of previous water ingress as well - faint stains on the beige carpets...
