That bottom picture is a MID unit; your car just has the standard cassette player....

Why is it you want the MID unit?

I'm not fully plugged in re this stuff; but I think you're looking at Low OBC vs High OBC there and not sure if it's changeable or if it is, but a lot of work (ballache) to do so

tbh mate, I just prefer the look of the MID :D

I was under a vague impression you could swap the head units but obviously not gain any function of the high obc.

I’m curious if it can still be done given mine is one piece

I would start by having a look at the loom in your car.

My MID equipped car is connected to the stereo with the usual ISO harness and then the MID has its own feed which presumably connects to power and the dash.

Be interesting to know if the low set up has extra plugs.

Hi Pete Soulby,

Anything is indeed possible!   ...    given enough time/money/effort or usually, all 3!  It then becomes an evaluation of if it's actually worth it.

To start you off, take a read of the official MID retrofit documentation bookmarked here -

It's a sticky and there's plenty more good information there (although years old now, I'm not sure if all the links work)

A 'quick' overview is you'll need to get a different instrument cluster, have that coded to your car so it displays the correct mileage etc, a loom to be retrofitted and then the MID panel and mounting cage I believe. Be mindful you get the non DSP version of the MID panel, and I think there's a couple more versions and you'd be able to tell from the button designations on each version.

If you do press ahead, please do create a thread with pictures to give a report of how it all goes :)

Cheers, Dennis!

Yes all do-able. Need a separate loom for the MID. Its still available from BMW, got mine from ebay. Fitted mine with a CD player as the top unit - bit if an upgrade from the cassette one!

It does work with a low OBC cluster. I've just fitted a high OBC cluster to mine last week. Thats a massive hassle as the adapter loom is NLA.

Is the loom similar to a patch lead? Have you a link to what you got please?

how did you get in fitting the high obc? Something I’d like to do to mine also

If you get a X5 cd from i think 05 on then you can add aux in too. I did a post on what you need to look for.

I have a bluetooth loom of ebay in mine and have perfect streamed music without a wire!

Key is that the software is KW30:02 or later on the HU, you can then add an Iso lead with bluetooth dongle and then stream via aux setting.
