Air con issues

Recommended Posts

So last august I got my air con re-gased and it was lovely and cold for like 3hrs then stopped again.  I ended up away with work so car wasn’t on road for few months.

The garage said that there is  UV dye in the gas so finding the source of the leak should be easy.  However since it’s been so long will this still be the case?

Was reading that the condensers are common issue points, is it worth swapping this prior to regassing again?

Or regas and see what happened?  I checked and the system is empty I simply tried one of the fill point fittings.

Now it’s going to hopefully get warmer I would like to sort it out.

You need a nitrogen test.

I agree with this ^^

If it worked after the regas but stopped within three hours, there is a leak somewhere in the system. Sort that leak before you regas the system.

(In theory) the garage legally have to carry out a vacuum test (negative pressure) on the system before filling it again. This doesn't always highlight a leak as joints can be sucked shut, hence the suggestion for a Nitrogen test (positive pressure).

Thanks guys, do most garages offer a nitrogen test?

thanks

Best bet is your local facebook group town page and ask for local specialists as often your local one man band is the best bet, they will have the kit to nitrogen test and also will know what they are doing compared to the usual kwik fit franchise.

Got it tested today and it’s leaking at the condenser.

any thoughts on which to go for, looks like I can change it myself.  Seen a company that does them for £46 seems cheap.

will get it swapped and re tested see what like

Seen these ones online https://www.autoairconparts.co.uk/condenser-aircon-radiator-bmw-535-3-0-d-e60-diesel-manual-automatic-sep-2004-to-feb-2007.html

Looking at an original unit its around £200, anyone any experience in any of the ones on autodoc?  They have a Hella one at £100 https://www.autodoc.co.uk/hella/10416852, then they have a Van Weezel for £70 https://www.autodoc.co.uk/van-wezel/1277587

This looks decent also: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/magneti-marelli/8038667

I can understand and always do want to go for original but its an awful difference in price for the old girl..  Just want to see if anyone has used other makes successfully..

Thanks

Mark
