oldtechnoman 15 Report post Posted Monday at 06:32 PM The time has come again to renew my car insurance again, how I hate doing this job every year. i have used Chris Knot for the last few years and they have been quite competitive. but have noticed that the quote seems to be going up every year. This last year I have hardly done 2000 miles, have over 40years no claim and no driving convictions and no medical problems. question what are the important extra,s should be included in the policy. Legal cover/ no claims protection. i don't require a courtesy car or breakdown cover. is there anything else I have forgotten? I does seem that once you get to a certain age they hike the price up as you get older my renewal quote is £411 up from £386 last year, Esure quote £301 but legal and NCP are extra,s. dj1233 209 Report post Posted Monday at 06:42 PM (edited) Check with your local insurance broker what they can do. Mine are able to compete with the best priced policies i get online for both my Car & Motorbike. Plus i can contact my Insurance directly via email or the phone - not a giant call centre, or have to do everything online. Like you i only add legal and NCB protection. I do my roadside assistance separately, and a standard courtesy car is always included - you only pay the extra for a like for like (if its your fault). The company i use is A-Plan insurance if you want to check them out. Edited Monday at 06:42 PM by dj1233
oldtechnoman 15 Report post Posted Monday at 07:25 PM Thanks for the reply and info, filled out on line form for A-PLAN and received a phone call about 2min later, a very helpful man took the car details and came back with a quote of £511 which when asked what I was paying he agreed was not very competitive. so left it at that. DarkHorse 179 Report post Posted Monday at 07:38 PM (edited) Been with Admiral for over 10 years with a multi car for 2 drivers fully comprehensive to drive both motors (~6k/yr and basic feature settings), where the 2007 E61 530i is slighty more costly at £290 with a 2010 Zafira 1.8i at £247. Never tried to claim so no idea what they are like when needed. Edit: Insurance is an enforced racket. Silly little things can be tweaked to save a few quid. Statistically you are less likely to make a large claim if you park overnight off road on your drive than inside a garage, I think that saved ~£30. Or you can push the excess up an evaluate the resulting cost difference etc. Edited Monday at 08:06 PM by DarkHorse updated

Tim With Chris Knott myself and TBH for the last 4-5 years; they've been unbeatable for me I've never made a claim, so can't say anything about that side of things; but I've always done the usual comparison site checks and spoken to a few other ore specialist insurers; but when you have the voluntary excess payment set to £0.00 and compulsory comes in on average £300; the other insurers have always worked out stupidly high, whereas CK have stayed around the same ball park figure. More so now that I've got an agreed valuation with them for my current touring; it was a painless experience and sorted over a few emails over the course of a day Unless I know I could save c£100 or more; I'd stick with CK in all honesty; their service has always been superb
Cadwell Parker 302 Report post Posted Tuesday at 12:06 AM I was with Direct Line for two years after I bought my F11. After doing the rounds on the usual comparison sites they were always competitive. This year, following 'modifying' my car with a remap I cast my net a little wider. in addition to the usuals I got quote from some specialist modified car insurance brokers and just for good measure tried Chris Knott as well. After notifying Direct Line of the change to the car and an increase in expected mileage over the next year they were nearly the most competitive of all the quotes but Chris Knott beat them by another £50 or so. They were easy to deal with on the phone and I was very happy with the quoted price. Will see what happens next year though.
Steve van hool 250 Report post Posted Tuesday at 08:28 AM Just about the worse thing you can do is renew with the same company year in year out, a £20 increase will be followed by a £30 increase the year after. As Martin Lewis would say, you get nothing for loyalty. My wife's RAC breakdown cover ended up being £140 through year on year increases, despite no claims. Never had any issues with that and CK; I've challenged them on it and they've brought the price back down to what it was Every time I've gone elsewhere for quotes; prices have gone much higher... oldjohnny 177 Report post Posted Tuesday at 11:46 AM It's a funny old game this insurance lark. Last year Tesco put my fully comp policy for the 2003 530d up to £342 from £198! Went straight to the good old Compare The Meerkat site and lo and behold the best quote was Tesco at....£!98.00! Phoned them directly and after quite a few, 'Can you hold on for a minute' conversations they apologised and confirmed the £198. Bad news is they have increased cover by all of £15 this year. Late last year I was seriously tempted to buy a 2007 Chrysler 300c, one of those cherished with no expense spared type cars. Not only was it difficult to get a quote but the cheapest was £890, again by Tesco who hinted they didn't really want to know about it. I have always wondered why. Steve van hool 250 Report post Posted Tuesday at 12:14 PM The other thing I would advise against in Insurance is " auto renewal" it works in the insurance companies favour, and makes folk to blasè, at renewal time. I phoned my company at renewal time to enquire on a £67.00 increase in premium, despite no claims being made, "Ah, that's because you had an introductory bonus" was the response, No Schit Sherlock, I would now like a loyalty bonus or I'm walking. I walked, got a premium elsewhere at £85.00 cheaper. For the sake of a 5 minute phone call it is worth it folks, and avoid auto renewal, it will affect your premium. oldtechnoman 15 Report post Posted Wednesday at 07:11 PM Thanks for all replies, well after going on Martins Money Tips and going through their cheap insurance link, I managed to put my details in 5 comparison sites and dully received my quotes, the best come in at just over £300 but by the time I add on Legal cover and NCD protection and finding that the access is usually £600/800 i think I will have a word with Cris Knot and see what they can do, thanks tim. dj1233 209 Report post Posted Thursday at 07:59 PM change the excess, it barely makes a difference to the price of a policy these days.
sanjx 174 Report post Posted 30 minutes ago Change the excess and get excess insurance. Costs about £45 for £1000 cover and it can save you more than it costs All comes down to area, risk etc.. as others have said. We find some of the smaller names more competitive but those same names woudln't cover us if we were in a larger town or city. Also find switching between the online and phone based versions of the same compnies can yeald a difference (such as quote me happy/aviva or Darwin/UKI). If your defo keeping your car for 12 months then Adrian Flux could be a good choice. They've always offered to beat the lowest premium I've got and always have but if you ever want to cancel, your not getting more than about £2 back after the cooling off period nor a decent premium if you change car mid-policy as you lose the price match discount. There's a forum discount code for them and they're most helpful when you speak to them
