Bobsterdanai 13 Report post Posted January 4 I have a 64 plate 520D with the B47 engine. FSH and on 78k. Over the weekend the engine turned to Rat Shit.. making a hell of a racket and shuddering/shaking at idle. My local and trusted mechanic had a look and says it's major engine problems, but without stripping it down etc... wouldn't know what the cause is. I then phoned my Indy specialist and explained things to them and sent a video, they say it could be timing chain (best case scenario) and full rebuild at worst. So I know the N47 engine had timing issues but thought the B47 was ok. Have any of you had timing chain issues with the B47 ? I've attached the video and welcome your input. 20210104_173021.mp4
Sir Anthony Regents-Park 869 Report post Posted January 4 That's f*cked. A chain it isn't - it's more crank/piston. 1 Bobsterdanai reacted to this
Oilburner 151 Report post Posted January 4 Agree from other members on here with past timing chain issues, that does not sound like a timing chain issue even though it's a B47 engine, they would most likely sound similar with a timing chain issue. 1 Bobsterdanai reacted to this

F10er 80 Report post Posted January 4 I am surprised to see this as nothing ever been reported about b47 anywhere. How often was it serviced?

What ballpark figure am I looking at to strip and rebuild ?
F10er 80 Report post Posted January 4 Ok but how often was it serviced ie 10k or 20k? I don't know if i would look at rebuild or put a 2nd hand engine in it. You are running the risk of ending up in same situation but i dont know how much it would take to rebuild. That also depends on what survived from this damage. Sir Anthony Regents-Park 869 Report post Posted January 4 If it has BMW service history, you should get a very generous goodwill deal on a new engine.

My mate has f11 520d with 70k miles on the clock. He was on the m5 motorway doing 70mph and crankshaft just snapped in half. Car was out of warranty, but came with full service history from Bmw and they paid 80% of the new engine price so was lucky. I think that you will need to contact you Bmw dealership and speak to them. 1 Sir Anthony Regents-Park reacted to this
Jimbo07g41 58 Report post Posted January 5 Oh dear, I am afraid that does sounds mechanical. Can you make out whether the noise is coming from the top or the bottom end? I don't know the bearing setup on the b47 but you can often get to them from underneath. If the noise is coming from the top it could be something in the valve train. Having said that I wouldn't be running that engine without some further investigation. Sound can also travel and I sometimes found it to be the unexpected. Van sounded like a bag of spanners and I thought it was new engine time. Turned out the EGR valve had snapped. Good luck and fingers crossed. 1 Bobsterdanai reacted to this
Bobsterdanai 13 Report post Posted January 6 Car is being recovered to a garage for a full engine strip/ rebuild tomorrow. Once they find the problem I'll post it here. Thanks to you all for your input.
