Halfords Oil Sale

Recommended Posts

Got a 530i N53 and when I plug the reg into the Halfords site it seems to suggest that Magnatec is not suitable, should be Edge.  Is that true?  A shame if it is as the Edge is not on the same discount.

Even more confusingly, there seems to be two versions of Castrol Edge 5W30 on their site:  LL and M specs.  The M is coming up as the recommended oil and the LL is deemed not suitable (but is the cheaper of the two annoyingly).

Here is the M:  https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/engine-oil/castrol-edge-5w-30-m-oil-1l-210078.html

And the LL: https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/engine-oil/castrol-edge-5w30-oil-1-litre-252023.html?istCompanyId=b8708c57-7a02-4cf6-b2c0-dc36b54a327e&istFeedId=367c5610-f937-4c81-8609-f84582324cd6&istItemId=xxxtxt&istBid=t

Finally, is there a benefit to switching to a thicker oil such as 5W40 on these engines?  Keeping in mind that I do low mileage (<5k per year) and a mix of longer and shorter runs.  I'm changing the oil every year rather than waiting for the OBC to tell me.

I ran 5W30 on my 730D (M57 engine) and have run Triple QX 5W 40 on all 3 E30 530i's I've had (M54 engine) and will continue to do so. Meets the necessary LL specs and I change it twice a year as I only do c5k miles also

Two full changes with Mann filters is less than 1 full tank of VPower! Worth doing IMO

The Halfords site says the same for my car; not compatible. But the container states LL04 & the oil meets the specs required (5w 30, C3).

IIRC Edge is the newer version to the Magnatec, but is always more expensive/not on offer. Seeing as most of us are running it in road cars being driven normally, and doing early oil changes more than likely there's no difference to be had (except a lighter wallet).

I'd stick with the 5W 30. A thicker oil is going to take longer to warm up in the colder weather, and you're not going to see the benefit of it which is the higher temperature performance.

Thanks chaps - might plump for Magnatec then at that price.

One other question - the car has Edge in currently, I guess it would be no issue to top up with Magnatec? (ie. mix the oils) Both 5w30
