My 2003 E39 530i Sport Champagne Edition II thread

Well I collected the car yesterday morning and pleased to say that all signs of rust and paint bubbling have now gone. 

 

As I mentioned earlier, I struggled to find a good body shop I was happy with so after further research on forums such as here, Pistonheads and M3cutters to name a few, a name kept and being repeated.  That was Greg Howell at Southam Bodies.  So after going down and having a chat with him a few weeks ago, I decided to go with him.  On a side note, he is very much a Porsche specialist judging by all the Porsche machinery he was working on!  He was also working on a very nice E39 Alpina B10 :wub: 

He has applied lots of waxoyl in the rust prone areas of where he repainted so hopefully this should be good for the new few years, I hope!

 

So here is the car at drop off:

I did find a small amount of paint bubbling on the inside of the bonnet too (on one side) so will get this booked in for later this year with Greg to get this sorted.  It's fine for now and have covered it with wax.

 

Next item on the list is rear door water vapor barrier replacements.

Looks like he's done a great job Mani :)

 

Re the vapour barriers, if they're not damaged, just remove the old butyl tape (hair drier works well for this, heat it up & peel it off etc), clean any residue off the door skin (WD40 etc), clean, give the area a slight key and then re lay some fresh butyl tape or W4 mastic off Amazon etc... 

 

The vapour barriers soon stick back down and its all done ;)

Whilst I have not yet seen the state of them, I think one of them has definitely gone.  Recently when I wash the car, the water just splashes out when I open the door so I think the barrier has failed and I am starting to getting worried that as we near autumn/winter, the water will just pool and then stay on the sill (rust) and get onto the carpet.  

Since they are nearly 20 years old, I am thinking it's probably best time to replace them anyway for peace of mind.

 

But as you say and recommend, I will definitely take a look first!

Well they do like to come undone, but they don't break down or perish due to what they're made of...

 

Yours should be fine Mani; just need the 'fix'

 

They're something I've always done to my E39s when I first buy them, they're done then :)

A small update.

 

After thinking about whether to reseal the existing rear water vapour barriers, for the relatively low cost of the barriers themselves, I decided to buy new ones and replace the ones in the car.  I also bought some of the butyl cord tape too.

 

Due to lack of time, it was not going to be possible for me to do the work myself so I had it booked in with my specialist last week and they replaced the seals for me.

 

Last weekend, I washed the car and very pleased to report that there is no splash of water when the doors open and also no water pooling on the sill.

 

So glad to say another item ticked off the list!

Almost a year has gone past since I have owned the car; wow, time has gone fast!

 

I had the car booked in for it's MOT a couple of days ago and pleased to say it passed with no advisories.  

So as well as an annual oil service, I also asked the specialist to replace the windscreen washer tank and filters.

Hit a milestone earlier today and the car has now passed 39,000 miles.

As a treat, I decided to replace the driver side door sill plate as the old one was a little grubby.

Spooky! My TechnoViolet passed 59,000 on the same day. Your Champagne II surely one of the very best. Obviously, you won't even be thinking of it, but if ever you do consider selling - give me first refusal!

Hi Mani; Pleased to say my E39 TechnoViolet still running very sweetly. And still a joy to drive. 

After I'd fitted the new power steering reservoir and hoses (and changed the fluid), I've taken a bit of a break from the refurb project. Waiting for the MOT in January next - see what that throws up, and get it all sorted including any advisories. After that priority is finishing the cooling system refurb (already done the viscous radiator fan and auxiliary electric pusher fan). That'll be peace of mind. Then transmission oil change. Then get the pesky pdc intermittent fault sorted, and the display pixels. After that I'd like to refurb the front seats with new foam pads and support springs.

So, a lot to look forward to - and meanwhile plenty of 'old school' motoring to enjoy.

A lovely moment recently where my E39 met my friend's E39 (also a Champagne Edition II) who had purchased it recently.
