Jeez, what a mess. BMW round to ISO adapters are so widely available hopefully that's the end of an adapter he has in the picture and just needs to pull the cable out a bit more to find the original plug.

Some success - I pulled the loom through and found the original connector.

 

All connected up, I can hear the CD mechanism whirr away when connected but nothing on the display.

Cost me £300 but I think it’s worth it for the aesthetics, plus the sound quality is so much better than the period Philips 740 I just removed. 
 

Appreciate yours and @Keliuss’s guidance - a simple task for many, not for some :ph34r:
