My first post couple issues hoping to resolve

Recommended Posts

Hi guys/girls

Just signed up and hoping to get some trusted advise from you guys if that's ok.

Bought a 2002 525i with 70k and first thing I noticed was that when I go for a long drive the temp drops then noticed the heaters don't blow any heat, only cold!

Had the car parked up for 3/4 weeks then started and drove approx 1/4  mile (around the block) parked the car up on the drive and noticed burning smell! Opened the bonnet and noticed white smoke coming from the back of the engine also noticed oil residue down the side of the block only at the back also on the firewall.

So I'm planning on replacing the rocker cover gasket today, any advice/pointers on the other issues would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Welcome to the forums

If you've no paperwork/history to show that the cooling system has been recently maintained; then budget to replace the stat and water pump and top hose, at a minimum and a full coolant flush and refill:

Stat (Walher or Behr IMO):

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WAHLER-OEM-HEAVY-DUTY-THERMOSTAT-KIT-BMW-5-E39-520I-52I3-525I-528I-530/352992452092?hash=item522ffd5dfc:g:Ub8AAOSwvhxb5spL

Water pump:

Meyle: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E39-520i-523i-528i-Water-Pump-MEYLE-2-year-warranty-11517527799/273898786858?fits=Car+Make%3ABMW|Cars+Type%3A525i&epid=249249773&hash=item3fc5a3d02a:g:BTIAAOSw7k9dDOvv

Top hose: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E39-520i-523i-525i-530i-E38-728i-Top-Radiator-Hose-09-1998-on-11531705223/372777205999?hash=item56cb40c0ef:g:drsAAOSwI35dhKY9

Coolant & deionised water (5l of each):

Comma G48: https://www.amazon.co.uk/XSG5L-Xstream-Antifreeze-Coolant-Concentrate/dp/B003BPNOXQ/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-p13n1_0?cv_ct_cx=comma+g48&dchild=1&keywords=comma+g48&pd_rd_i=B003BPNOXQ&pd_rd_r=0d5d034c-895e-4c0c-9290-295c20e006cd&pd_rd_w=5dd57&pd_rd_wg=UJ4ae&pf_rd_p=01fd0f51-3837-49b3-b7d3-05520a5467f4&pf_rd_r=S3PE3W0BJRRZ1TDH2QF6&psc=1&qid=1602940510&sr=1-1-ac3a866f-801f-44fe-9e94-bb9a271cf6b8

As for the gaskets; yes; rocker cover, spark plug and bolt gaskets will need replacing. Probably the oil filter housing gasket too; they all leak (get old and harden/perish with age):

Rocker gasket set:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OE-BMW-E46-E38-E60-E53-X5-320i-325i-330i-520i-525i-530i-Rocker-Cover-Gasket-Set/232739494612?fits=Car+Make%3ABMW|Cars+Type%3A525i&epid=1529773640&hash=item36305adad4:g:sB4AAOSw9DJa2H2U

Bolt seals:

Oil filter housing gasket:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-3-5-7-X3-X5-Z1-Petrol-Engine-Oil-Filter-Housing-Gasket-11421719855/233132077846?fits=Car+Make%3ABMW|Cars+Type%3A525i&epid=249625062&hash=item3647c13316:g:Y8kAAOSwcOtcZBUo

- Re the rocker gaskets; you need to also ensure that the cover isn't cracked or warped; so give that a good once over (and a good clean); shine a bright torch through it from the underneath to see if there are any hairline cracks and also run a straight edge on it to make sure it's not warped.

Use sealant on the half moons, corners and seams; not really needed anywhere else; but know plenty of folk that run a very thin bead all the round and never any issues etc. Personally I use Hylomar blue:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hylomar-HMMS00C-040G-Universal-Blue/dp/B0064M6A6G/ref=sr_1_1?crid=NAGL6TMCMDHJ&dchild=1&keywords=hylomar+blue&qid=1602940895&s=automotive&sprefix=hylomar%2Cautomotive%2C144&sr=1-1

Plenty of How To's re all this on Google & Youtube

- Re the heaters; it could be that as the stats failed/failing it's not letting the water circulate fully; could also be the FSU that's failed (could be other things too); gut generally those are the 2 main issues; FSU here:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E46-E39-E53-E83-X3-X5-HEATER-BLOWER-RESISTOR-MEYLE-C942/190679482553?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

2nd ^^^

and yes welcome to the forum

70k is a very low mileage so may not have had that much attention engine wise but it’s the age that’s the issue for these engines. Too many plastic and rubber bits that get brittle as Dan says. Being low mileage a full oil and brake service should also be on the list. Another possibility for the heating is the heater valve solenoid on the right suspension turret in the engine bay as you look at it. I would also highly recommend you get INPA and a ODB cable from Cable Shack on the homepage of this forum to see what fault codes are being thrown. You’ll need a Windows 7 or older laptop for best results.

Best regards Saf

Hi pal; they do fit :)

Your engines the M54; so they're the same for the 325i, 330i, 525i and 530i etc

Don't always go by what it says on eBay; the part numbers are whats important and they match RealOEM etc

Opened the bonnet and noticed white smoke coming from the back of the engine

Ahhh flashbacks to my old 528... Good times.

No smells from this though, and the temperature gauge meant that this one wasn't a mystery. Water hose which runs under the manifold had perished at the back of engine end. Enough slack on it that I just cut the tatty last half inch of it off and reattached it.

Well, and then had to replace blown rad caused by this. And the 'stat. And some other hoses. And then got a new E39... And did them all again on that as a precaution when I bought it :)

What is it you're after pal?

Just oil & filter; or are you looking to do the power steering fluid and spark plugs etc?

I just use TripleQX oil via Eurocarparts (cheaper to buy via ebay than it is their website). Other sellers sell it too.

5W30 or 5W40 is what you need, it meets the necessary specs.

Or use which ever oil you want. It's very much personal choice.

I do change my oil every 6 months as I do such low mileage. I'd rather have it fresh as can be rather than leave long periods between changes

Get the Mann filter too

Doesn't mention BMW LL01 or LL04; so not sure if that's right for the BMW engines, someone else may chime in to say if it's right or not

But I'm not a believer in 'branded' oils; as long as the oil meets the necessary BMW specs; it's fine :) More so if you change it out and keep it fresh at least once every 12 months... I used to be (Fuchs, Royal Purple only etc), but not any more

I do my oil services on the drive with a Pela pump; draws the oil out through the dipstick tube. Doing that and draining the oil via the sump; there's about 300ml difference in it all, so for me, it's a good way to do a bit of DIY to the car etc :)

x2 oil changes, + x2 filters = less than one tank of VPower for me! So it makes sense to do it once every 6 months
