New Windscreen Time

Recommended Posts

Perfect timing.

Hardly used car recently and now have a big chunk out of the screen and shall need changing.

Screen change on my F10 was painless but get a feeling this may be more of an issue due to the ICONS.
I know the camera bracket shall be bonded to the screen ( I make the brackets for a number of glass providers) but concerned for the calibration.

Guess I shall find out when I start the replacement process!

Aww no, on my F10 the original screen lasted 80k till a rock, took it out ... the next 15k miles seen 3 new ones, clearly the ones fitted by glass replacements companies are much lower quality. I know the G30 screen has an acoustic screen, doubt the cheap ones they fit will have this, let us know if road noise increases after your new screen is fitted.

Be firm with the windscreen company and demand a genuine BMW screen. They’ll

argue that whatever shit they’re offering is “the same spec”. Which is rubbish. These cars need the right glass, and the insurance should cover genuine parts. I had a replacement in my old F11, first one was awful, it had distortion if you looked through the sides! I made them refit a genuine screen. Even then they struggled with the auto wiper sensor calibration.

100% I read that a real one cost a few £100 and the ones that auto glass etc use cost £29 to buy in.

Calibration is all but a case of driving car down the road for a few miles. Had my windscreen replaced twice in my old G30 over 26k Miles. Never an issue with icons at all

I had mine replaced by Autoglass last year, and didn’t have any issues.

They arrived with a genuine BMW screen, replaced it and calibrated the ADAS all within a morning.

Never had any problems and you can’t tell it’s been replaced.

I´ve just replaced my G30 with a G31. The new (to me) just had it´s windscreen replaced. The car has Driver Assist Plus and HUD, so it uses all the beels and whistles in regards to the windscreen. It all works as expected including the HUD; so just to verify, that a "non-OEM" windscreen can do the job. If I owned the car at time of the replacement, I guess I would have asked for an OEM one though.

The fitting of the windscreen with a HUD is pretty critical in terms on angles and can require a major dismantle of the dash to reset the projector angle if outside of the control range so sounds like a very through job was done.

How do you know the screen is non-OEM ?

I have a windscreen chip on my F11 with HUD and after reading the horror stories when replacing the screen decided the risk was too high for replacement so went with repair - chip was on the cusp of repair/replace ....

The camera brackets come bonded to the windshield already, the fitter just needs to do the replacement and calibration. This one is from my F10 but the G30 was similar. I had the windshields on both cars replaced by a windshield specialist and they were well familiar with all the procedures. They need to drive the car a bit for the recalibration, a printed report was handed to me afterwards. No issues whatsoever.

Because it says "Pilkington" and doesn´t have a BMW logo or the "Connected Drive" text just below the KAFAS cameras. My old G30 had that, and that was the factory fitted windscreen.
