e28 project

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I picked up this 525e at the weekend. The car had sat under a tree for a long time. I wasn't holding out much hope when going to view it but as they don't come up often I thought I'd make the 2hr round trip to see it. I was surprised to find it as solid as it is. sills, arches, roof, sunroof, door bottoms, boot floor, inner guards, floors all in great nick. One of the window mechanisms had been removed and the window fallen down for some time. The floor was soaked so I set about stripping the seats and carpet out of it. My plan is to recomission it and drive it as a weekend Car. The car came with no keys but I was chatting to a guy who told me to bring a barrel along and he could strip it and build a key off it so fingers crossed. I've a barrel out and ready to go. The car sits on 4x (what I think are) magnesium style 5 wheels. they aren't alloy anyway. I will keep posting progress as I go along. Ever since I sold me e30 sport in 2014 I've been looking to replace it with something of the same era, I have a 1995 540i project but my relationship is on and off with it. Waiting for the better weather to get it finished. I stripped the carpet out to see what I'm dealing with and to my surprise there is no rot on the floor. A previous repair to passenger side footwell is the only sign of repair work.

As the car came with no keys i stripped the drivers door barrel (and passenger door barrel as per Locksmiths requests) out and brought them to a locksmith to make me up a key. I collected it today and had an anxious drive home to see if the ignition barrel matched the doors. Good news is it does! Not only that but a battery and a few cranks and she started right up, albeit a bit tappy.

I'm super happy with the project this far and will post progress as I go.

I've seen some lemons for sale. Couldn't believe my luck. Had it been advertised properly it would have got a lot more attention!

Nice Find!!

I seen that one advertised with a very limited description. Just goes to show that sometime you have to get out there and have a look.

Indeed you do, I only went out to Tesco one night to buy a Pizza, had a mooch at the Classic Car newspapers when I got there and saw an advert that I thought was just so too good to be true. Anyway next day I called the number, arranged to see it and OMG what a stunner ! Bought it there and then ! Expensive Pizza !
So yes, poor advert, good advert, you gotta go and have a look !
PS - Captain B Sir, I’ve sent you a PM.
Cheers

Arctic blue indeed. The wheels appear to be E34 cross spokes, BBS style but not BBS made. Get a picture up of the centres.

Here's the pictures of the wheels

Work has been slow on the car. I did get the carpets back in and seats wet vac and dried. Had the dreaded dash faults. So brought it to the kitchen table to investigate using a thread from the forum. Unfortunately the battery's had leaked and destroyed the board. Someone had already tried to separate it and ripped the ribbon half way so I think it's beyond repair. I had planned on using a li-ion battery from a  £20 drone I had laying about as its 3.7v and 550mah so should have worked. Now it looks like I need a working cluster. I'm also on the lookout for a front bumper and a d/s indicator if anyone has any bits. When I finally get some time I'll get stuck back into it.

Ps. I had the car running again, this time I drove it 50metres or so, selects all gears and stops.

Hi Dan,

Nice save and good to see another E28 getting the love it deserves, well done sir keep up the good work.

Ivo Christov in the Netherlands is an E28 specialist and may be able to help you repair / refresh / replace / resolve your issue.  He was is Sandy Eggo for a St Patricks day E28 meeting, that has been postponed, so should back home now albeit likely in some form of isolation.

I recommend him and his work without hesitation.

Standard E34 15" cross-spokes, Style 5 BBS style but not BBS made. They are Italian FPS wheels and were fitted to lots of E34's, E32's etc.

Hi again Mick

I purchased the board from Ivo, great hassle free service. Anyway I fitted it and still no luck. All I'm getting is the empty fuel light and battery light before starting. I have checked, cleaned and refitted  the earth wires on the battery, in the bay and under the dash (g200 I think). any ideas? I have messaged Ivo and sent him some photos of the main board. I couldn't see any breaks but I don't really know what I'm looking for. Waiting on him coming back to me.

On a brighter note I ordered some goodies for it to keep me busy during isolation. I got some bilstein b4 shocks with 30mm votgland lowering springs. Ordered and fitted a new front indicator for the d/s, some new bonnet struts and a new rubber intake boot. I have ordered a pfeba style front valance. I'm hoping the quality is good, I've never bought grp replica parts before but it seems impossible to find things for sale. I have a set of 18 staggered style 32 wheels that have been fully refurbished which I might try on the car to see what it looks like. I know 18s can look too big but they're originally intended for my e34 so they can go on there if they don't suit.the flat star 16s might look well on the e28 with lower profile tyres.

Anyway just an update on where I'm at

Just a quick update, progress has been slow while waiting on parts for the e28. I have got stuck back into my 540 and the manual swap is progressing.

My front spoiler came, it seems good enough quality for a fiberglass item. It is about 5/6mm thick and flexes quite well. I clamped it on to see what it looked like, well happy with it.

I bought a pfeba spoiler from Sandip on the forum and have it to be painted and fitted. I got the springs and shocks fitted, to be honest I wish I'd bought the bc coilovers as the votgland springs don't sit as low as I'd like. Reason I went for them is I've had them on a few cars and liked how they perform. Nice drop and not to bumpy. I'm nearly into the price of the coilovers anyway. Live and learn I suppose. My dash cluster still wasn't working since I got the new board off Ivo and he suggested I bought a new replacement main board from Him. Fingers crossed it works when it comes. Oh and I bought some recaro front seats in matching pearl beige cloth from Latvia. Like a kid at Christmas waiting on them to arrive. That's me done with modifications, next stop mot prep.

I had mentioned before a ticky noise coming from the top of the engine. I had a long spanner on the rocker cover listening to hear if I could pinpoint where roughly it was coming from and it is very faint, then I checked my injectors one by one and although 3 are overly ticky the one closest to the bulkhead was loudest, and was ticking in perfect harmony with the loud tick I could hear in my other ear. Is it common for them to jam up? Any ideas on how to tackle that?

Thanks, IMG_20200420_154056.thumb.jpg.ce853619ebe4987ac668389824ed570d.jpgIMG_20200420_154056.thumb.jpg.ce853619ebe4987ac668389824ed570d.jpgDan

Hi Dan,

I have seen various chatter about ultrasonic cleaning, re-conditioning and flow balancing of injectors.  I believe that there is also a small mesh filter on the inlet side of the injector that is replaceable too.

Check out this link:

http://www.cruzinperformance.com/

There must be an equivalent service over in the UK somewhere.

If the 30+ year old injectors are out of balance / dirty / clogged then it will likely cause an erratic idle and noisy / poorer running.

Just a thought.

Best regards,

Mick

Hi guys, it's been a while.

I have been spending time getting the car mot ready. Finally received the v5c this week (from March) after the car had wrongly been marked for export...only One registered owner to my delight.

Fitted new flexi brake lines all round. New fuel lines, picked up some rondell 0058 wheels in need of a refurb and lots of little odds and ends. My noisy tappets turned out to be a badly worn cam due to oil starvation. Also the dirtiest head I've ever seen so I decided to send it off to a bmw specialist here in NI for a more modern lump with a manual gearbox,  decided to go with m54b30. I've purchased and refurbished some e34 540i calipers which I will fit when I get it back. I also bought the rest of the pfeba body kit. Picked up some genuine sideskirts and a carbon kevlar rear lower splitter. they are being painted and fitted at the shop. Got some 535i anti roll bars to go on too. Starting to get it the way I want it. Interior retrim will be next on the list along with a full polybush kit.

The photos below are pinched from the net. That's the kit :wub:Screenshot_20201106_235037_com.pinterest.jpg

Those Recaros look absolutely amazing.

I had my injectors sorted at Hall's Electrical in Swindon - mesh filter and all o rings replaced, cleaned and checked and worked as good as new.

Thanks, they are in rough enough shape tbh but I've spent lots of money elsewhere so a retrim will have to wait. Thanks for the info on the injectors. I've had the m54 engine fitted now and runs like a Swiss watch.

Hi guys, so I've got the car into the lean-to and stripped the rear axle out of it. I bought a 3.25lsd off ebay. Cleaned and painted it in black oxide paint with new oil. Wire wheeled the rear beam and painted it too along with all the other bits and bobs. I ordered new bushes front to back and my plan is to change everything and have the underside treated and undersealed. The rear beam mounting points had started to go, lucky enough the inner skin is only surface rust. A friend of mine is a fabricator and is coming to sort them for me this week. I had to get a patch on the front chassis leg while the car was getting the engine fitted. I've yet to drive the car with the new m54b30 engine as the bushes are all dry rotted and I'd be afraid of something giving up. The dust shields are rotten too, they're more expensive than I thought to replace @250 for the 4  not only that but all the bearings need to be replaced in order to replace these. I'm afraid to calculate it all up:unsure:

On a side note I won this old toyota on a competition raffle page, it will fund some more of my bmw buildB)

Nice to see another member from this side of the pond on here! Enjoyed reading you're thread, and hope to get into an E28 myself (hence joining). Have had and still have a few E36's and an E30 but have always loved the E28 and now is the time for one!

Look forward to more updates!

Hi Ben, a man after my own heart. I have owned alot of bmws  e28, e30, e34, e36, e39, e46 and f30. I love e30 coupes but with having 2 kids now I needed something more practical. The e28 wasn't something I ever seen much of growing up. Anyway I absolutely love this car. I must update the progress, the last few weeks I have even pretty busy on it. Good luck with your search!

I noticed a dark blue 525e posted for 4k today on all the usual Facebook pages. It looks to be in decent condition.
