Hi everyone, new to the forum and this my first post and I am seeking advice, I hope I am posting on the right place.

It is a BMW related about an engine.

I bought a sea boat with BMW M51 6 cylinders Diesel Engine as a project.

The engine been fitted by the previous owner with the ECU wiring but it doesn't look healthy plus I got a leak from the injection pump.

The question has anyone on here manage to run the engine with a mechanical pump? If someone can put me on the right path I will be grateful.

Thanks in advance

It can indeed, but getting a M21 pump is difficult. The M21 was never in the UK, so German/Europe ebay is your first port of call

It might not even fit. BMW ran the early ones (pre 2/94) with an alloy adaptor on the block that the pump bolts to (995 pump), then cast the block with the pump mounting (993) from 2/94 to 2/95 and finally the 994 pump from 2/95 with a different diameter pump hole. If you can get the last three numbers from the pump you'll know how old the engine is.

Then you have the E36 and E39 td/tds engines with the sump oil bulge at the rear.
