V8 Drag Link / Centre Tie Rod.

Recommended Posts

Afternoon,

Im currently looking to purchase a replacement centre drag link / tie rod for the V8.

From Real OEM, it seems there may be two versions;

32211096060 - RHD

32211096059 - LHD

Almost all of the ones I have seen online on various sites list the LHD part number. My question being - are they both the same part?

I have found one listed on ebay that has both part numbers listed.

Many thanks!

They are different. One of the two joints (for the pitman arm or the idler arm) only rotates, whereas the other one is free to move around like a typical ball joint. So they aren't symmetrical (hence left and right hand drive versions) and need to be fitted the correct way around. The TRW one on my M5 is conveniently stamped L and R, as was the old one I took off.

Just the info I was after - thanks!

Typically the LHD ones are cheaper, needs to be done I guess as the steering feels a little vague. When I stress the drag-link, one of the ball joints (on the nearside) knocks, so will hopefully tighten things up a little.

I would like to think it will last 20 years like the old one but as I do about 1000 miles a year it should outlive me by a century or so.

I read about a problem batch from a few years ago which might have been responsible for some early failures. There was a range of date codes involved and mine isn’t in that range.

Hmm, just checked gsf and they don’t have much listed

One here on The Bay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-BMW-535-540-M5-E39-INNER-CENTER-DRAG-LINK-BALL-JOINT-TRACK-ROD-END/302879484985?fits=Car+Make%3ABMW&hash=item4685062c39:g:bIkAAOSwZjJU~Z6I

Autodoc have them as well; but tread carefully as their delivery times are atrocious as is their refund policy, if you ever needed to send anything back...

Thanks, I’ve gone for just tre’s for now as I know at least one needs doing.

I’ll inspect the rest of the steering linkage whilst I’m doing it, and keep an eye open for a decent centre link if necessary. I’ve got an odd clunk when approaching full lock, and under heavy braking.
