E28 525e differential 3.08

Recommended Posts

Hi

Let's see who can shed some info on this as I'm struck

1987 525e

From my knowledge 525e were equipped with either 2.93 or 3.07 diffs

Some were lsd which should have an S at the end

Mine as 3.08 2001 as you can see in the picture

Never come across this before

It seems to be an lsd as well

Just had a quick look at Andy Everett's book and yes its 2.97 (manual) and pre 84 models then 3.07 (auto) on the 525e.

No mention of a 3.08 on any e28 but this ratio is used on an e46 320d it seems, which would fit with 2001 if that's the year?

Is it possible a different diff has been fitted? Interesting to know if e46 stuff fits!

Hi

I did see that the diff ratio is used on e39/e46 too but don't look like one

This seems e28 shape and also the tag print looks e28 too, bit odd isn't it as never come across the ratio before

I asked Andy this morning before posting and he hasn't come across it before

The tag does look rather clean and nice even if the rest of it looks like a dogs dinner.

Having said that I wouldn't be surprised if the E46 diff internals wouldn't fit a medium case diff.
