E39 sunroof swap glass to metal ?

Recommended Posts

Is it a simple swap, ie. no metal cutting, to replace a glass sunroof with a metal one from another e39?

I would assume the hole is the same but looking here there seem lots of different bits of mechanism that have different P/Ns between steel and glass.

Makes me think its not just a case of swapping the panel.

The E28 has a number of bespoke parts that are unique for the metal / glass roof so I would expect the E39 to be no different.

There is a good "how to" guide for this for the E28 online, so there could well be one for the E39 too.

^ But the shells are the same regardless of what is fitted so no cutting.

Its one of those needing a donor car jobs i would think or a kit of parts from a breaker to ensure you have all the bits and bobs

That's what I'm thinking and hoping. If not just the panel then a cartridge swap of frame and panel may be possible.

I think a glass sunroof wins hands down over a metal one, why the swap?

Swap the whole cassette over lock stock and barrel.

A B and C piller covering's off, all handles and sun vis off, remove the roof lining through the rear door.

Cassette drop's down after removing the 10 torx bolt's
