Review of 7 seater minibus...

Recommended Posts

OK so we all know that we don’t like the 2 series Grand Tourer (the 7 seat version of the Active Tourer) but this is what Avis provided me with on holiday in Mallorca.

First things first, its a front wheel drive BMW which we all hate, right...

Well let’s put it this way a Golf is better than a Renault or Peugeot... therefore a BMW is better than a VW. Well maybe.

Its a seven seater brick that frankly rides and handles better than it should on Mallorcan mountain roads. Would I buy one in the UK instead of my G30 - of course not. But it’s OK.

The brick also has a panoramic sunroof...great for the suntan on holiday!!

You don’t realise how much you miss the power and torque of the G30 until you put your foot down in the “minibus”. But it’s OK.

I suppose it depends on what you are used too...

This one is a 218d (!!!!!) X-drive - not that I need the part time 4 wheel drive but it gives me “wheelbarrow” exhaust (and badge delete)... eat your heart out F30  340i owners!!

Could have been worse could have been a Renault Clio!

Pictures follow, for you to throw sticks and stones at if you wish...

Quite nice for what it is I suppose and considerably better than most Spanish holiday hire cars.

Definitely not a fan but could cope for a week!

We had a peugeot 208 as a hire car - it was ghastly - not 7500km on the clock and you could beat the syncro first to second.

It handled like a pig with some weird diagonal rock and it couldn;t hold 100kph on a motorway hill without a down shift.

I suppose it looked ok.

I was tempted by a 911 from Sixt....but I hate their TV adverts (“smug”).

Also it would be too wide in the mountains (as some may remember I had a 991.1 for the day in the Austrian Alps - a real driving highlight).

BTW a tip for any Avis car hire - join their Preferred scheme for free (queues, what queues at Palma airport - once we got our bags we were driving in the road in 10 minutes). Basically you go straight out to collect your car, and it should always be one of their newer models.

I would still prefer a Clio.

The words “especially for you” spring to mind...

Madeira 2017 - relatively well equipped (Sat Nav, etc) but 3 cylinder, one litre turbo......

My rental costs have increased directly as a result!

Only reason I say prefer a clio is because you mentioned Spain. I’m in Alicante rather often having a place there and it’s always a squeeze to park in city centre plus the Spanish tend to be on the low end of my “driving ability by nation scale” hence small is just easier. Usually go for a Corsa or an EcoBoost fiesta.

Mind you, having rented in Poland in June, I got a 330e. Was very nice I must admit, impressed with the power train when charged and using the battery as a boost rather than efficiency
