iDrive Rebot Cycle - Any Advice?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum with a very specific issue that's doing my head in and making me afraid :)

I have a 2014 F11 520d M Sport Touring B47 2.0 and a couple of weeks ago on a long trip to Cornwall from Manchester the iDrive started a continuous reboot cycle.

It'll boot up and stay on for about 20-30 seconds (it varies) before rebooting again. Regardless of what I'm doing or which screen I've left it on it will do this.

I haven't applied any particular settings when it happened.

I've tried resetting profiles.

I've tried the remove all personal data thing but it shuts off mid way through.

I've tried not having any phones nearby with bluetooth enabled.

I've tried doing a software update but it goes off before it can start (and I think this might be risky anyway).

I've tried covering the sensor on the windscreen to see if it's a light/dark thing.

I've pretty much tried everything (I think) but maybe someone has another idea?

I've had it from new and unfortunately I have no warranty or servicing agreements remaining, so I'm looking at £120+VAT from my local dealer just for a diagnosis. :(

A friend has just bought a similar model and has an OBDII device so we plugged it in with the engine running and it gave various readings over 4 tries with some codes:

Session 1, first time:

MOTOR (!)  [Engine]
284E00    Lambdasonde nach Kat, Signal Nernstspannung: Unterbrechung

CIC (!)  [Car Infotainment Computer]
  E1C440    No description available

REM (!)  [Rear electronic module]
  800FB2    No description available
  800F92    No description available

Session 2 (after code reset)

FEM (!)  [Front electronic module]
  930769    No description available
  93076B    No description available

Session 3 (after code reset):

MOTOR (!)  [Engine]
284E00    Lambdasonde nach Kat, Signal Nernstspannung: Unterbrechung

FEM (!)  [Front electronic module]
  930769    No description available
  93076B    No description available

Session 4 (after code reset):

MOTOR (!)  [Engine]
284E00    Lambdasonde nach Kat, Signal Nernstspannung: Unterbrechung

FEM (!)  [Front electronic module]
  930769    No description available
  93076B    No description available

Do these codes make sense to anyone here?

I can't see much about E1C440 anywhere. The 930*** codes implicate battery but on a reading it seemed to be producing decent output (can't remember what sorry) and was at 79%.

Is there anything  I can try before I need to start my disposal plan? :(

Thanks for any help,

Chris.

Gah. I'm sure I checked for another thread on this and there is one. But I haven't updated maps - do they auto update?

Not in any of the F1X series vehicles, that came with the later NBT EVO.

There was another thread a little while ago and the diagnosis was that unfortunately it needs taking to BMW for a software update. You may be able to get a very good indie to do it if you’re lucky.

Flashing the headunit to latest files will rectify the issue. Use ESYS and the latest FULL psdzdata

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I took it to BMW Stockport and they dianosed and re-programmed it within an hour's diagnostic charge.

So, cost me £85 but to say I'm relieved is an understatement :)

Note to self - keep on top of software updates!!

Oh nice. Snap though I also have f11 520d and happened on the way back from Cornwall. Did BMW say why this happened, as firmware updates or re-program surely indicate issue with the unit in the first place.

Sorry to hear, I hope you get it sorted as easily as I did.

BMW said nothing about it, but I'm sure I read either on these forums or elsewhere on the net that one of the software updates addresses DAB issues, which would co-incide with a long drive across the country going through different boundaries etc.

Mine was on an old software version so had none of the updates on. I insisted it was a software issue and was a fault that they should have fixed (warranty or not) but they were having none of it.

So if it's out of warranty I'd go to your dealer and ask for it to be diagnosed and re-programmed. They did mine within an hour.

Also worth shopping around if you live near a few dealers - Manchester (where I bought mine) wanted £120 for a diagnostic and Stockport were "only" £85.

Have attached a snip from my invoice.

Good luck!

Thanks very much for posting. I'm around London. So they quoted me approx £168.00, I would have thought the same too if software issue. I might give that a go, but I think good advice to shop around the main dealers as I was looking at getting a warranty package to get them to fix this and they said some BMW dealers are cheaper than others.

Thanks again. I been living without entertainment since Easter holidays as I cant justify forking out £1600. How long has it been fixed and do they offer a warranty after they reprogrammed it. What's to stop it happening again. Yeh I think mine old version too. I'm sure if it happen to you and me and others there must be a known issue.

My friend had the x5 2013 and the had the erg issue, manifold got a hole in it. This was before BMW issued out the notice. He was charged about £450 and they called it a good will guesture. He was not happy.

Driving since easter without entertainment?. Get it down the dealers to get it sorted sir.

I did ask but dealer was saying it probably need new unit. £1600. That's what scared me off and looked at diffrent alternatives Ebay, other non genuine replacement units like an android 4 entertainment. Etc..

So update from me.

Took it into bmw Stansted £150 and the reprogrammed the head unit.

Original version:

Media: MV-010.012.001

Phone: TV-010.012.001

When I got the car back

Media: MV-130.026.001

Phone: TV-130.026.001

All seems to be working fine atm, but when they made a video to check car. They said unfortunately you need a new head unit as its happened too many times.

What? 1st time it has come in for it.

Does the technician  know what's going on. Cause when I spoke to the lady she said it's fixed, but if it happens again. Need new head unit.

If it needs a firmware update because it seems this not a one off, a few people on this fourm had same issue. Surely it would be covered as a recall as it's not really wear and tear.

Glad you got it sorted!

They're the same software versions as mine now.

Worrying advice and poor attitude from BMW overall. I'm starting to think about selling mine before it happens again.
