iDrive keeps rebooting every 20-30 seconds!!

Recommended Posts

My 2016 320d has started doing this.   Started the other day shortly after removing my phone and re-adding it - to see if my maps contacts updated.

That is the only thing that has changed recently.       One journey it might not happen at all.   Yesterday it happened once when driving for about an hour and a half in total.  Whereas it happened twice today in a 5 minute journey.

This has started happening over last 2 weeks on my 2016 520d for no apparent reason.

Not sure if it needs the firmware to be updated or the whole operating system re-loaded or updated?

Tim.

You may be able to get away with a HU firmware upgrade but the best option id to have a full iLevel or Integration Level software upgrade that covers all modules in the car. Both options will need to be performed by an independent specialist or BMW.

Thank you Matthew.
I've just checked the current software version on the car, which is:
Media: MV-130.020.002
Phone: TV-130.020.002
While doing that there is a note saying: to update the Software go to www.bmw.com/update
That site says enter your VIN number, this then gives a link which allows you to download the latest version and explains how to update the software yourself using a USB stick. I've not done that yet!
So is this software the HU (head unit) firmware?
and is Intergrated Level software upgrade the whole operating system?
Tim.

No, that's why I mentioned the specialist or BMW. What you are looking at is the only user update-able software and that is only for the Phone Bluetooth connectivity with stability updates for newer phones.

The Integration Level of software update is an update to the software of all modules in the car and makes sure that the interoperability of software levels is correct as many modules communicate together.

Ok Thanks, I didn't think it would be that easy. I've just popped round to my local Sytner BMW dealer. They have a 'special' on for this issue. £50 for diagnostic and £50 to update the software. It's booked in for tomorrow.  Tim.

Let us know how you get on. Sad that it's a known issue yet they're still charging for it but £100 isn't the end of the world though.

Hi Matthew,
They did the software update yesterday as arranged. Total cost was £100. So far so good, no reboots.
I've just checked the current software version on the car, which is now:
Media: MV-130.026.001
Phone: TV-130.026.001
Previously:
Media: MV-130.020.002
Phone: TV-130.020.002
I don't know what else, if anything they updated. But it was not a complete installation because the radio has the same presets, the bluetooth still has my iPhone details and the Sat Nav has my destination history.
In hindsight I should asked them to update the Sat Nav maps while they were there.
Anyway thank you for your help.
Tim.

The media software version you show is not an indication of the levels the car was updated to. On your car you will need ISTA diagnostics to see what the iLevel of the car is after the update. They may have just updated the HeadUnit but in my experience BMW does all modules during a software update maybe as this is a known issue they have a shortcut to do just one module.

When I first got my 2013 f10 a few years back, it still had very old maps on, so the first thing I did was update them using ones I purchased from bmw.

After it had finished, my I drive was knackered. Constantly rebooting every 30 seconds.

Took it to BMW, and they were useless. New head unit - £1.5k.

I took it to a very good and recommended BMW local specialist.

They fixed it by reinstalling everything (sorry I don't no more than that) and updating all firmware, software etc.

It's been fine ever since. I've updated the maps every time a new one has been released and not had an issue.
