iDrive keeps rebooting every 20-30 seconds!!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help me with the problem I currently having, that my iDrive in my F11 2014 plate is constantly rebooting after every

 20-30 seconds.

It has just started to happen today and I drove for over 3 hours and it continuing happened the entire time and it is now really annoying and not sure what I should do next.

I have attach a video which demonstrates what it is doing. Any suggestions or next steps would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

This happened to mine and I was told by the dealer a new head unit was required at ~£1500.  Apparently since then, there is a software fix, but no idea how to access it.

If a software fix then BMW or a suitably equipped Indi as the car will need to be reprogrammed. This isn’t a DIY job.

Did you recently update your maps? I had this issue after updating maps to 2019_2 and worked my back through 2019_1, 2018 1& 2, to 2017_2 and it's been fine since. I know mine needs the firmware update because it's on A but haven't got round to it.

Also figured out I could trigger it by stopping mid route and then resuming a trip - this would throw it into the boot loop.

As above a firmware upgrade is needed on the headunit. I have had a few of these where it sometimes happens randomly and other times when the maps have been updated to the latest version. E-sys and full PSDZdata is needed to flash it correctly.

Does anyone know the actual reason this happens?  A firmware update is probably either a) masking the underlying problem or b) fixing an existing but latent bug in the prior firmware. Be interested to know.

Ah are you saying a map update causes the issue which then needs a FW update to fix? That would make some sense . I haven't bothered updating my maps and haven't had any issues either.

Definitely seems to be the problem with mine. No problems with anything 2017_2 or earlier. As soon as I go later than that I get boot loops. I'm guessing it's some sort of memory management issue because if I'm in an area with not much going on - RTTI and actual roads, it seems fine. Go somewhere busier and 9/10 times I can get it to crash.

Yes the map update can cause issues on older idrive systems. Had one yesterday with 2014 3 Series which had 2014 maps, updated to 2019-2 and there was the reboot issue. Flash of the headunit to the latest version recrified the issue.

I think it will depend on your retailer; one friend had issues with (official) map upgrade (maybe damage flash drive), got several loop reboots and retailer told him no warranty. And had to pay for a new nbt evo!

I have a f11 2014, 520d and experienced same issue. Mine reboots loops around every 2min. Dab not working maps not working bluetooth not working. I did not do any software / firmware upgrade. Just happened on trip back from Cornwall. 5hr +.

Went to BMW and they said pretty much same £1600 for replacement head unit.

But need to do diagnostics first £168.00.

Did anyone get a cheap fix for this.?

What I did come across was UK have 6 year warranty on products apparently, but I'm not sure if it covers cars, cant be wear and tear as its electronic?

But I dont know if this applies really.

I think £1600 is a lot of money.

Hi All,

An update on this from me.

I booked in my car for diagnostics at BMW in Bedford for a charge of £96. They then phoned me to let me know that they had re-booted the iDrive free of cost which has now resoled the issue and I no longer have the problem.

I would definitely not let them charge you £1600 to replace the unit especially if it only requires a reboot!

Let me know if you have any questions about my case and I am more than happy to respond.

Thanks,

Anil

You sure that wasn’t a reprogram rather than reboot? The iDrive can be restarted by holding down the volume button on the dash?

The comment on the report said "Programming for radio/idrive resetting carried out".

Yes, so it was “reprogrammed” which is the route to remediation that others too have found resolves the issue.

Thanks Anil,  I gave before a quick call to see if they did it free of charge and he said highly unlikely. I just wanted to check with them if they acknowledge this as a fault, but James on the end of the phone said no. Will charge £96 per hour.

But thanks, it gives me more confidence now as on this fourm I found you and Chris , have same year 2014 car 520d touring and you both had same issues and same resolution.

Cheers, I'm ringing around to find a BMW branch close by to do diagnostics and reprogramming .

Ah wait do you mean you paid £96. And then they did reprogramming for free?

Sorry I jumped the gun, thought wow BMW has recognised that this is a recall issue.

So update from me.

Took it into bmw Stansted £150 and the reprogrammed the head unit.

Original version:

Media: MV-010.012.001

Phone: TV-010.012.001

When I got the car back

Media: MV-130.026.001

Phone: TV-130.026.001

All seems to be working fine atm, but when they made a video to check car. They said unfortunately you need a new head unit as its happened too many times.

What? 1st time it has come in for it.

Does the technician  know what's going on. Cause when I spoke to the lady she said it's fixed, but if it happens again. Need new head unit.

If it needs a firmware update because it seems this not a one off, a few people on this fourm had same issue. Surely it would be covered as a recall as it's not really wear and tear.
