F11 air suspension

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Having an F11 I have rear air suspension and as usual have ended up replacing both airbags with Arnotts which were easy to fit and seemed better quality.

Recently the ‘level control fault’ message appeared. The car was raised up higher than it should be and as I was about to go on holiday I though it would be the height sensors so replaced both. This didn’t work.

Next on the list was the valve block so I replaced this with a new Aerosus as they are top quality. FIXED!

Except 2 weeks later the message is popping up again! The suspension doesn’t go down and isn’t too high like it was before. The relay is dry and appeared fine and I know the pump can lift the car quite quickly.

My my thoughts are perhaps a small leak from the compressor to the valve block causing the computer so throw a fault as the compressor is running longer than expected to lift the car? Otherwise the control module? That’s the only part I haven’t replaced really.

Anyone know what it is or have some ideas for me to look at?

You might just need to reset or re calibrate the ride height.

I would imagine that can be done using dealer diagnostics/ISTA.

From what you've said it doesn't sound like there is a leak as you have said it doesn't go down.

No I haven’t been to a dealer yet. They charge stupid money to diagnose. I may end up going to a specialist indi yet. Trying to avoid their slow diagnosis and big bills that follow for what appears to be not a straight forward fault.

From what hat I understand there is no reset of ride height. Other than if you wanted to actually change the height. Or lowering etc. I have reset the fault using Carly but it resets when the ignition goes off anyway as it’s a ‘soft fault’ . Carly says more advice than a fault...

Yes, they do charge stupid money, but, you have already spent money changing parts until you find the cause. Get it diagnosed, then take the car away and do what they say needs doing.

The same thing happened to mine after fitting Arnotts air bags.

I don`t know if it is because they are a wider bag than the ones that they replaced.

Anyway I took the control module apart and found some corrosion on the connectors, which I squirted with WD40 which solved the problem for a month but it is doing it randomly again.

Something for you to look at maybe as it is easy to access next to the battery.

Have just had off side air bag replace by bmw. And all seemed fine for a day or two. Now near side air bags not inflating at all. Can here compressor run and then stop. Any ideas peeps??

There are loads of posts about this now.

Is the near side airbag failing?

is the compressor failing?

is the distribution valve/solenoid failing?

is the pipe work crimped or compromised in any way?

The list goes on and it is seemingly hit or miss as to whether one person’s issues are the same as another’s. A methodical approach going through the entire system is the only way to resolve your woes.

Why go go to BMW for the fix when their parts are much more expensive than the likes of Aerosus or Arnotts and their labour charge is inflate for what is a relatively straightforward job?

Second post in this thread gives advice on resetting of ride height.

That is only if you want to drop the ride height when putting lowered springs on the front axle. There is no reason to “reset” or “calibrate” the ride height. That is only needed if the controller is replaced . The factory ride height is set in the module.

@gazzago

Did you ever get to the bottom of your issue as I have a very similar one with my F11. Replaced both bags with Aerosus and the valve block as someone had stripped the thread on one connector. It looks like the car is to high. The readings I get on ISTA show it is way out as well. Anyway interested in what your issue was please.

Short answer is no!

I unplugged the control unit in the boot to check the connections and didn’t have any more issues. At least for a couple of months. Maybe once per month it will flash up a warning and clear when switched off and not come back again for another month or so.
Once the weather is warmer I’ll attack it again. Maybe change the control unit as I have a spare now. Difficult fault to find as it’s not there most of the time and is only recorded as a soft fault.
