Ant's 98 535i Project

Recommended Posts

So after having my 420d M pack for a year, I have been looking at getting my dream E39!

I work abroad most of the year but am usually found between Oxford and Cheltenham.

Months of looking and I finally picked up this Biarritz blue 1998 E39 535i Sport with a 130k. Full service history and straight body work.

The plan is to "keep her" and store her as I'm out of the country most of the year.

On the side I have been working towards my detailing level 2 with UK detailing academy so I am looking to really get stuck in and bring it back to a show room shine.

Other than paint work, looking at returning the alloys to a gun metal, ceramic coat the exterior, service auto gearbox and generally update it.

Started decontaminating the rear in the shade today and will get onto machine polishing when I cam get to my kit.

New number plates and plastics are back to new!

See below pics on purchase, the 4 and today's work.

Any suggestions, feedback or words of caution!?

So over the past few days I have deep cleaned the paint work, de ironed and de tared.

Performed a full vehicle paint depth reading. Happy to see there have been no panels repeated! Just the odd stone chip touch up.

Before my Rupes arrives I am trying out a drill bit pad on some of the heavier scratches. Quite impressed so far!

The headlights need doing as on closer inspection they are light scratches.

Also started on the engine bay using Auto Finesse engine degreasser, Auto finesse ironed and swiss wax metal polish. It's taking long than I thought!

The project continues.e17f66c42b87e2552696326bfc184c3c.jpg423be80e0d62f1e0d8a7202f25776fff.jpg3f553b4af0986328ab21bfb63d9a5155.jpg43e903a5ee16328b1730081ca3cff1dc.jpgbffe27bc13b105bfc65514553b2a2f0c.jpgf2536f5b6a0cd8bc2303db2a78d3bca7.jpg888f8268ff2114020f7b0830d1cc511c.jpg

So challenge of the day! Help needed!

What on earth is this start up light sequence! So many questions.

So the HID kit,

-Is it a power surge issue?

-Is it a start up sequence?

-Is it meant to do this?

-Is there a secret button for strobe lights?

-Is this a tribute to Alex Roy's infamous Polizei record breaking M5?

(If you do not know who Alex Roy is you probably shouldn't be in this forum!)

I know modlight do a sequence with the lights, there's a few videos on YouTube
So it does indeed have a modlight! God knows where the control unit is though.

So challenge if the day. Serious fuel leak! It all started at the petrol station. Running BP ultimate with a redex fuel cleaner. thought I would bring it but fuel appeared to leak out. After paying and informing the attendant I drive home, pissing fuel! I thought it was just over spill as it stopped leaking while the engine is off. but it seems u der load it discharges it.

Any known faults with these fuel tanks? going to limp to a specialist tomorrow morning.

‘Not that I know of as they’re plastic. Check fittings & seals under the rear seats though and fuel filler connection

Rusted fuel pipe maybe seeing as it only leaks with the engine on and the fuel pump running

So turns out it is the rubber seals on the breather pipes. All being sorted as of tomorrow.

Then back to paintwork revival!

Back from the shop with new rubber breather seals.

Gave her a quick bath too.

Booked in next week for alloys in a Bentley Anthracite, playing with the idea of having matching kidney grill surrounds. It is a kind of metallic deep chrome. Any thoughts?

Also going to do the calipers in Biarritz Blue to match the body work.

All coming on nicely!b06fa77eff730d53c68fa6fcc424f210.jpg5d720332280932b6d9eb02d85f0a6e30.jpgd5c25a1bc2bba010042a58c357e418b9.jpg

Personally I wouldn’t colour code the callipers; makes them stand out (small brakes) behind the nice alloys...

I’d either go for a simple black or silver; just to make them look clean and looked after :)

It’s a lovely looking motor though; but can’t help feeling a more brighter alloy colour would do the car justice, maybe a bright silver with a sparkle lacquer etc...

It’s a personal choice I know; horses for courses etc

I see what you mean on the colour choice. It just seems silly to put them back to normal for the cost. hence why I thought a nice off grey deep silver. Struggling to find pictures to compare. Any ideas?

A brighter silver with a sparkle lacquer that flips in the sunlight won’t be normal/OEM though ;)

Maybe a lighter anthracite, again with sparkle silver?

Or really go the whole hog and get the centres powder coated and then the lips hand polished ;)8)

So yesterday changed the old cabin filters. Sprayed my favourite aftershave on them, smells lovely!

Now getting ready for tomorrows show at Forge Motorsports in Gloucester!7f8592ddd9f58f5c0ff52d8c4606b363.jpge9951da9320a95638179ecc1e3d518a3.jpg

So after yesterday's course at UK detailing I picked myself up a new DA and its wireless! Cracking bit of kit. Currently finishing off my level2 so the plan has always have been to practice and bring back the paint on the 5.

Uploading pics now.6cd1ddb02c5adfee4f85f5890886444f.jpgd56b4de7d73dbe04235a1abbe765f93d.jpg989c65cff6402eb529db44399d344fe4.jpgc520e1d982a1817c24bc23d6a597601c.jpg

So the bonnet had a stage 2 polish and after an IPA wipe down, finished off with Swissvax Crystal Rock. (Obviously did another quick decontamination prior).

The results speak for themselves!eea5e77b68bbb46de00cbdf77f3cd3ad.jpg1b41368f8842462b84aa2c391d5c7801.jpg7dde51331f1c48451b1cfc0546f87de1.jpgee037dc3c42d612209319fc5d65d79e3.jpg64e6bcafc9382baddd3b4e544d9caab0.jpg
