New Car added - V8 540i

Recommended Posts

Took the plunge with a bit of a local project, to scratch the itch.

540i non vanos auto.

Great opportunity.

Just picked up new wheels today locally.

Needs Drivers window regulator, front suspension parts required got an unusual knocking when warm only.

Got some clip in privacy blinds yesterday.

Had a full ashtray so headlining will be getting changed to sport black. Interior is great however. Pixel radio got removed at the weekend.

Shadow-line trim and black bumper trims looking likely.

Maybe exhaust modifications!.

Get the chain guides done if you don't know their age. Ask me how I know......

This; regardless of mileage all the M62 engines are of a certain age and likely to have problems. Taking the rocker covers off can give you a small visual check but not all the picture; if you're going to keep the car it might be worth thinking about.

If the knocking suspension happens over uneven wheel surfaces but it is relatively quiet when the wheels are going over the same bump (ie, speedbump) then it could be the anti-roll bar bushes or drop links - mine was and it's a relatively cheap and easy fix of a few nuts and bolts all round.

Good luck with car, the V8 can make an addictive noise and isn't short of outright low revs grunt.

So nice :( desperate to bag a V8 E39 some day!

Mine isn't a long term keeper Jim, maybe a year or two more. I'll give you the nod.... ;)

Exhaust mod is simple, a few pics in one of my albums here. And those rear lights I sent you, the indies are clear so you'll need to do something about the fronts! Great looking find though and a good example to fettle with.

Low mileage for its age as well, got much history with it?

Hopefully the planets align financially, etc then and I'm in a position to buy it.. we'll have to see at the time.

Regarding the knock only when warm ... Check the front suspension mounts ... I've known a few M5 have the same issue.

My pleasure, happy to help out a fellow E39er...

They were packed away on the loft doing nothing, pleased to see them being used.

Interesting day.

Fitting sport headlining. To find BMW totally changed the design between facelift and non facelift.

Grab handles different size, with holes in the roof in the wrong positions for modern handles. All the pillars are very slightly different and wider to accommodate air bag at the front. Different fixings on all 6 pillars.

New headliner sits lower with a 20mm void to fill with mod block or something similar to make the grab handles work.

Anyone done this job?.

 There's a few on the 'bay;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=32211096060&_sacat=0

I've got one sat on my garage floor waiting to go on as my car is making a lovely graunchy 'dry' sound when steering when the car is warmed up, my rocker cover gaskets are on the to-do list too.....

Doing the chain guides pre-emptively may be going a bit far, but theres no excuse for not changing the tensioner.

Also worth noting that the fuel filter doesn't appear on the service schedule IIRC, so is unlikely to have ever been changed.

The TRW one at £170 is OE, as fitted at the factory.

Here's the factory original one (fitted when the car was first built) that came off my M5 - same as fitted to all E39 V8s :-

Just make sure the new one supplied to you is for a RHD vehicle.
