Parking brake switch

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

As im going through the car, replacing and repairing all the little things, ive noticed that the handbrake switch plastic is cracked and about to fall apart.

Has anyone else come accross this on their F07/F10/F11?

Is it an easy job to replace?

Mine is cracked too., I'm waiting for the slow boat from China to arrive.

Less than £6 for a new one....

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Handbrake-Parking-Brake-Switch-Button-for-BMW-5-6-X3-X4-F10-F11-F06-09-13/312168521026

Probably very none genuine part but for less than £6 it's worth a punt.

And thanks to Matthew for the link, job done.

Yeah ive seen these on the bay. I would question the quality but if BMW parts are anything to go by then why bother...

Keep us posted how you get on.

It's a common fault due to the brittle plastic, I replaced mine after 55k.

Any tips over and above the TIS link? I take it it was straight forward enough to prise up the trim?

I'm sure I've seen a post on here about doing something very similar that meant taking up the trim panel. I might have bookmarked it somewhere, I'll need to find it.

First hand advice is always best for some of these tasks on these cars.

Yeah, one torx under the armrest and the rest is a firm pull, you will then need to unplug a couple of bits iirc, very easy I had mine off a couple of times to clean it, replace the ashtray and again for the brake.

I may have put some pics up?

Mine is cracked as well, was like that when I purchased at 37k. I don't think it would have snapped completely so I just fitted a silver cover to it and the auto hold button - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chrome-Car-Electronic-Handbrake-AUTO-H-Button-Cover-Fit-For-BMW-5-Series-F10-F18-/142624784419. Fits perfectly and is a nice change to the look, they come with strong double sided adhesive already applied so it's just a case of peeling off and sticking on.

Good topic to have found as I noticed a small crack across the rear left corner of mine the other day.

Nice to see it's potentially a cheap and easy fix.

Looking at this a bit more, my eBay link is just for the switch pull so no need to take the centre console trim off as it can be carefully prised up and out.

This will save some time. Nice find.

I'm sure I don't need to say but I'd use a plaggy trim removal tool.

+1 on that.  After years of using a screwdriver for trim removal and stabbing myself recently with it, I bought these

The 'forked' end is good for the expanding rivets that proliferate these cars.

Switch cover replaced this morning. Easy 1 minute job. Well worth doing.

Take it you used the method in the video and just popped it out?

Or did you fit the cover that AndyM mentioned?

Mine is still on the slow boat from China.

Lol got home to find mine had arrived.

You can see what you are trying to prise out. Two little cylindrical recesses that it pivots on and presumably what it "clips" into position with as there are a couple of chamfers it's got to squeeze past.

Sorry to resurrect this ghost, did any of you fit this to a 530d? I’m struggling to find a compatible button, eBay sellers don’t ha e this model listed but the link above says it fits 530i and 535d, which I assume would have the same setup. eBay sellers confirming they’re not the right size but I can’t find which one is!

Hi and welcome, yes, I swapped mine over with one from fleabay, put the last 7 digits of your VIN number into here and it will give you the correct part number.

Hope this helps
