Adam's E39 Touring Project

Recommended Posts

It's gonna be a busy weekend if I can find time.

Another injector has died and left me needing the RAC to bring some easy start.

Headunit is fitted, but I'm going to fit the i-bus adapter this weekend.

Handbrake is making some horrible noises and doesn't work holding in reverse.

Transmission mounts to fit (there's a bit lump of metal around the transmission that's floating around and I haven't been under enough to see what it is?)

Decat to fit.

Sub box to fit.

PDC sensors to fit.

It's actually too hard to be honest.  It's the same as computers - all the plugs are different shapes so you can't go wrong!

Wow you've done some cool stuff with it man. Hope it keeps running for you!

I've never heard of the webasto/Arduino thing... I'll do some research. I'd like my car to text me in the morning :D

Morgen's ED30 got paint:

I gave it a wet vax:

32899614847_3673b3c1c6_k.jpg

Fitted a 50000w Chinese inverter (actually 2000w apparently, probably 200!):

Finished off the boot build with a Rainbow Hammer (10") and a 300w RMS Kicker amp:

The Andriod head unit is good.  Has full OBD functionality and supports coding too (comfort indicators and the likes).

I'd have taken pictures of the rear arms being done but it took me 3 days (1.5 hours on one bolt) so I spent more time flinging tools around rather than having a nice time and taking pictures.  But aye, all new rear arms (the ball joints just fell out their sockets when I took the bolt out, they had worn so badly).  Just needs a service now.

Some decent work going in there; you’re clearly capable with cars ;)

Which head unit did you go for?

Aye, I'm not a mechanic, just someone who likes messing.  It's an Eonon something or other.  Refurbed on eBay but came with the screen protector and no scratches on the screen so not sure how it could have been used.  Was only £160 ish.  Sold the OEM stuff for the same money so it was a no brainer.

So Morgen and I (and my best mate from Uni and his OH) went on a trip round the coast of Scotland (called the North Coast 500).  You start in Inverness and head North and then follow the coast down the West.  Scenery is lovely, people are lovely, roads are lovely.

Started off in Inverness for the first night in some converted shipping containers.  Fire is provided and so is a BBQ:

Managed to make it one hour out of Inverness and this happened:

Ideal.

Made it to a castle:

I drove it to Thurso (after Dingbro, our native parts supplier) couldn't get me a bag for two days.  By that point I'd be so remote that it wouldn't matter.  Had given up hope and decided to just do the whole 500 miles lop-sided.  Got to Thurso, got drunk, abused the E39 Facebook owners club slating how bad these cars are.  Attempted to fix the bag with a bicycle puncture repair kit and some duct tape.

This did not work.  Gave up, got some pictures of the camp site:

Bearing in mind that I am currently near John O' Groats (the top of Scotland) with barely access to phone signal, drunk and abusing E39 owners, a man PM'd me telling me he is only 10 miles away with 14 E39 tourings, 24 classic Minis etc.  I didn't believe him.  He phoned me the next day, promised us all breakfast, airbags and jacks.  We went round.

The man was not lying.  Barn after barn...

That’s awesome  can’t believe that guy had 14 e39’s! What is he planning to do with them all? Looks like he had some nice ones in that fleet too.
