edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted March 28, 2020 Does anyody know anything about this new version that icebox auto have just put up for sale that apparently only has CarPlay/Android Auto without the actual Android operating system? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264681065661 This appeals to me as it's significantly cheaper (over £350 for the Android version plus CarPlay adapter) and I have an iPhone so would happily use the iOS apps over the Android ones anyway. Mo_1986 90 Report post Posted July 5, 2020 Hi all, Has anyone changed the start up picture to their own yet? If so how do you do it and does anyone have any pics i could download and use? Also when scrolling through the menu the car info section the car is a x1 i believe, is there any way to change this? I'm running Android 9 and ID7. Many thanks. Keliuss 366 Report post Posted July 5, 2020 Mine is Android 7 and there's a few options for the startup pic. It's in the settings menu, the one accessed with the pin code. I changed it from the "connected drive" to a basic BMW logo. I think there's a few Audi options too, but I decided against those If you wanted to use your own image you'd have to root the unit. This would probably be fairly simple once rooted - dropping the correct sized image into a certain folder somewhere but changing the image in the car info section would involve root and unpacking whatever app is in use for "car info" and repacking with your image. You might have better luck over here on bimmerpost where they are theming their Android 9 units Keliuss 1 Mo_1986 reacted to this

Hi Edd After looking at this off and on for a year , I finally got some useful info from IceBoxAuto as the owner called me back - really helped me understand the options - so this £274 one should be seen as a less expansive option, But if you are Apple-centric, then it seems a good option. If you want any the optional extra's like DAB, then you'll need Android unit with the Carplay add-on. I guess running carplay over Android will take away some of the upgraded performance anyway? if you want the highest performance and latest chipset with integrated 4G, then you need android. For me, this version was enough: - CarPlay for Calls, SMS, Siri,Spotify, Waze, etc. plus access to OEM when required. - Rear Reversing camera - WiFi Connectivity to an iPhone. I'll get DAB through my phone, along with 4G through tethering. I'll let you know how I get on. Edited July 14, 2020 by db525d

I'm very interested in it, but am wary buying something that I haven't yet seen in action. They can't even provide any real photos, I don't know how they expect anybody to part with nearly £300 with only these horrific Photoshopped images to go on 1 Keliuss reacted to this
edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted July 19, 2020 I've just noticed that Andream are now selling the Carplay version for £235 including free shipping (from Europe apparently so should be quick) https://www.android-car-dvd.de/products/8-8-wireless-apple-carplay-android-auto-head-unit-multimedia-for-bmw-series3-5-e60-e61-e63-e64-m5-e90-e91-e92-e93-m3?_pos=1&_sid=563236e18&_ss=r Very tempted! edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted July 20, 2020 Well I just took the plunge and ordered the Carplay one direct from Andream. I'm a bit sceptical about their 2-7 day delivery estimate, but I'll report back when it arrives and I've had a chance to fit it. For a shade over £200, it's worth a gamble! 1 max535 reacted to this

edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted July 27, 2020 Tracking says mine should arrive today Andream emailed me this video which shows how to fit it, but also shows the unit in action:
edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted July 27, 2020 (edited) Mine arrived today! I'll do a proper write up over the next couple of days after I've had time to play with it, but first impressions are very good, especially for the money. MarkIrl 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2020 Hey folks, thinking of taking the plunge on one of these, my only apprehension really is the use of the radio - do you have to keep flicking back into the original unit or is there a way to have the radio in the Android GUI? Hello You have to go back to the original UI to use/set the radio but then you can switch back to the new UI to use anything else (just without sound) e.g. Waze. Make sure you set in the advanced option to 'turn off' the 'switch to AUC automatically' whenever you switch to new UI for this.
MarkIrl 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2020 Ah ok thanks, so I can't have Waze and radio sound. That's a real pity!
edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted July 28, 2020 I think you can buy a USB DAB receiver to have radio 'inside' the Android UI, but not sure if it's clever enough to work alongside navigation (eg fade out when the nav talks)
edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted July 28, 2020 If anyone's interested, I've made a separate thread for the CarPlay unit:
VasG 0 Report post Posted August 20, 2020 Hi all. I’m quite new to the topic and would appreciate some advice. Guy I bought the car from removed the ccc navigation / dvd unit all together and plugged in a dab instead so i’m now left with no working screen / bmb menu And a radio I don’t like. Looking to fit an android instead. Question is - are they completely independent to the original Navigation unit? I.e can i just remove the radio an plug one of these in or shall i start looking for a replacement navigation unit first? thanks
edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted August 20, 2020 No unfortunately they are not independent, they require a fitted and working CCC/MASK/CIC stereo. It might be difficult to put back to how it was, will require some investigation. If the one they have fitted works well, you might be better off buying a double DIN stereo you do like instead and replacing it?
JasonH 163 Report post Posted August 20, 2020 Judging by the type of gearshift you have you'll need a CCC system. Unfortunately the Android systems for E60's and E61's need a working CCC underneath. Your best bet would be to contact the previous owner and see if he still has the original CCC and fascia. Even if not working it can be repaired, and for less than a replacement. The original will be coded to the car. A replacement can be coded to the car but it does need ISTA-P.
edd_jedi 168 Report post Posted September 17, 2020 Since fitting mine last month, I have noticed that if I start the car after three or four days without using it, I am getting a high battery discharge warning. Has anyone else had this?
