E39 - 525i v 530i

Recommended Posts

Looks like the Mini will be sold this weekend, and I'm looking around at a few options.  One car which has come up is a very well presented 525i Auto.  Now I've had a 530i Auto before, and it was great performance wise, but what is the 525i like in comparison?

Any advice from people who have had both much appreciated!

I test drove a few 525i's before I bought the 530i I have now from Zion off these forums

In all honest, day to day driving, I don't think you'd tell the difference

For overall acceleration, the 530i has more, it's faster too IIRC, but then again, its rare you're able to take advantage of either!

This was a good read I thought: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1147892-E39-530i-sport-VS-525i-sport

Yes, I had a good read of that, and it was informative.

I'm not that hard on a car really - not one for tearing off at warp 6 from the lights, or exploring the limits of a corner, but I like to be able to overtake swiftly and keep up on hills and so forth.

I suspect that with 192bhp, it'll be a little slower than my V70 205bhp because of the torque deficit, but the BMW has a nicer auto box.

Iirc the 525 figures put it on par with a 528 but obviously more is more

One observation seems to be the smaller the engine the lower the spec options wise.

I'm looking at two cars.

525i A Sport, 2001, FSH, 80k miles, light green / black leather, £2000.

530i A Sport, 2001, FSH, 128k miles, silver / black electric comfort leather, £3500.

530i has had a lot of recent work, including cooling system overhaul, has factory nav.

I'm sure others will come up, but both of those are within 80 miles of here.

I'm also still checking out Saab 9-5 Aeros that have been properly looked after mechanically, with FSH to prove. Even the 530i would struggle to stay with one of those mad bastards.

until you understeer into a hedge

That never happened to me before Dunc - and I ran one as a daily for 4 years!

Fastest run from Holyhead to Inverness I have ever done in my life!
