BMW E39 M5

Recommended Posts

Hello Guys I have recently been fortunate enough to buy a 2002 le mans blue M5

i've had a number of e39's before ranging from 530i - to 530d's but never a M5 so as you can imagine massively excited :-)

The m5 I have is a 2002 on a 51 plate with 147K on the clock, with a lot of history (BMW)

now the questions I have is:

there is a Creaking noise coming from the front and a slight shimmy at approx 50mph the previous owner advised me this is likely to be thrust arms I am unsure ?

is this a common issue ?

I also have a small dilemma , do I go for the muffler delete as it is currently factory

is there any preventative maintainance I could do to keep the car Tip Top.

Thank you for your swift reply, I do suspect the top mounts but I guess further investigation will reveal all

any thoughts on deleting the muffler , what I definitely do not want is a chavvy noisy droning m5 ?

Muffler delete.... Do it !

My old car with Hayward and Scott boxes which are in effect empty boxes... my current car has the simple rear boxes delete and it is quieter...

Shimmy is common and is often due to the bushes... often gets worse under braking...

The creaking noise is probably either the top mounts or the centre drag link, as for the muffler delete, it's up to you, whatever you decide to do you won't end with with a chavvy noise because it's a race tuned V8, not a little shitbox corsa or saxo with an asthmatic 4 cylinder engine and paint can exhaust hanging underneath the back bumper.

Eisenmann are great, but also a rip off IMO

Either go custom and have built what you want for a fraction of their cost, or do a simple muffler delete with nice tail pipes ;)

There is loads of info re this on here and Bimmerforums etc and plenty of vids on The Tube!

I have Supersprint Race on mine. Muffler delete is good if done at reasonable cost and not at similar cost to branded exhausts.

Make sure the twin pipes are as long as possible before they go into single pipes or it will sound crap.

Muffler delete with OEM look tailpipes gets my vote, it's one of the first things I did to mine when I bought it.  Also an added bonus of weight reduction of those massive rear silencers!  Must be 25kg+.  With clamps you can easily revert as well if you sold the car on and sell the muffler deleted pipes on separately.

Hello again Ive been in to my local Exhaust Specialist in Derby Called Brittania

I have been advised to not remove the original backboxes but instead remove the Y resonator

and change the exhaust tips ive been quoted £400 just for this,,,,,,, sounds expensive ?

when E34guy has just sold a full eissenmann Sport exhaust for £700

any ideas

Meh...!

Why not remove the stupidly large back-boxes?!

They weigh a ton and drown out the V8 loveliness ;)

Your the car owner; you have done what it is you want doing! I'd say new custom back-boxes and maybe straight pipe the resonator too; they should be able to sort the sound with the back boxes to how you want by adding wadding or whatever it is they use now?!

Don't remove the res or it will be boomy, i had my muffler delete done there and they said it will loose back pressure bla bla bla.

Get the muffler delete done at a reasonable cost and it will be good.

Thanks for your replies

Kenny you recommend anyone

As Brittania in Derby are a rip off

And Ets seemed very confused

When I asked them for a quote to remove back boxes.......

I had my muffler delete done at custom chrome in Nuneaton. It was £250 and sounded amazing. I always bang on to people to get it done. No drone on the motorway either. Sounded beautiful.

Have you got a video of yours by any chance and what kind of tips did you go for?

Hello guys sorry for the late reply, I eventually got the mufflers deleted from ETS on upper dale road in Derby, I chose tips that pretty much looked standard I prefer the OEM look

but I have fallen in love with the car all over again, the deep V8 sound sounds amazing and is just right not too loud that it is intrusive, but loud enough to enjoy and never use the radio again.

:-)
