Sam's return to BMW , imola red E39 540i sport

Recommended Posts

So, I've been getting bored at times with the van, yet other days I put my foot down and it makes me smile, I still feel I have unfinished business with it, yet fancied a change, something comfy, a bit bigger but still not a run of the mill common car.

So here she is, ticked the v8 itch, and also since missing my e36 I always fancied another beemer, so that's ticked off too.

It's a 540i sport, which runs a 4.4 v8, in rare imola red, apparently 1 of 399 imola red e39s, and 1 of only 12 imola red 540i.

It's had all mechanical work done in the past, including cooling parts refreshed, and also a new gearbox and gearbox ecu not long back, so very mechanically sound but hadn't got round to bodywork.

So it will be having a full bodywork refresh, going to machine polish it all, replace the boot as its bubbling (replacement sold with the car) maybe have a couple of blemishes painted, and going to refurb the wheels as lacquer has started corroding.

Then it will be just little touches, nothing major as I love the way they are.

Few pictures of my van, as I'm well known on other forums, but new to here.

It's pretty fun as its now running 180bhp and 300lbft, and that's only at low boost, will get round to final mapping over winter.

Eagle eyed people may of also spotted I own a Celica gt4, I've owned that one foe 7 years, it's my track toy, I'm currently rebuilding a better spec forged engine, aiming towards 500bhp+ d5f02a535465d4a93e62eb5908dce9aa.jpg4454dccb930cc098c39c1af843b5f69c.jpg

So work on the 39 started yesterday, gave it all a good wash, then started machine polishing one side, it's really brought the colour out, as it had oxidised and was totally covered in swirls, now it's a lovely deep red, and that's without the final finish.

The side not polished yet.

The polished side.

Also started getting rid of this wood trim, replacing with gloss black.

They are not too bad, I will sand back, put some rust treatment on and paint them, probably after winter to be honest, Sam

Machine Polished the rest of the car today, and changed all the interior trims to gloss black, will take a pic of that later.

Cleaned the exhaust up, not machine polished the rear bumper as it could do with a respray.

It's low tack blue 3m tape, it's like masking tape but even lower tack, leaves no residue at all, Sam

I don't know, I used to be a self employed detailer, did it for years, hence why I have the van, I get all my stuff direct from suppliers but if your not after much best would be a detailing website or eBay, Sam

So black trims fitted, and more time spent cleaning inside and polishing the roof.

Also polished head light and rears.

It's not perfect, and some rds remain, but it's much better overall, I just wanted to see how the colour came up, and when I get more time I will slowly tackle each panel at a time.

It's a modified mk3 (99-01) Ibiza cupra front end, making the caddy (which usually has a front end quite similar to a 93-99 Ibiza) look a lot fresher.

I then split the headlights, painted them black inside, and fitted projector units into them. The bumper had the slats cut out, and I then plastic welded a frame, to make it look like the "wide mouth" was original.

Seat did do vans, but they were very basic, and they never did a tdi version, Sam

Just going to tidy it all up, have the tints redone, spacers, lower, probably upgrade speakers, my Mrs is buying me another private plate to match my others, and then fit an exhaust to let that v8 sound out, Sam

I don't think the speakers are actually that bad, they just seem to lack bass, I don't know if someone has changed them in the past, or just that I heard they were that bad and had low expectations.

Nothing major on the stereo front, tbh I've bought this more as a tidy up and use project, rather than modifying much.

In my previous cars I've spent silly amounts on stereo gear, on my e36 m3 I had a full rainbow setup, using slx components all round, an ipaul 4 channel, an ipaul mono and a sub, set me back best part of 2k back then, and then in my van I still have an alpine DVD head unit, slx components up front, directed 2 channel amp, directed 3k rms mono amp and an re audio xxx 12 sub in a 2.5ft cube box.

Parts of the van stereo may make its way into the e39, otherwise it will be a single sub and amp, and take it from there, see if I need to replace all speakers or not, Sam
