Morning all, So this morning i started the car as normal, and the usual lights come up. Rear O/S Brake bulb is out, Air Suspension light (no self-levelling) and Airbag (either tensioner, or i still have to book in for the recall on the steering wheel airbag) I started driving away from my driveway and obviously the engine is cold. A bit of a hearty shove to the end of my road, and then the gearbox light has come on. kick down is pretty harsh. can't use my phone and there's nowhere to stop. I carry on to work, (20 minute drive) park up in the carpark, and turn the car off. turn it back on again straight away, and the light was still there. I'll go back and check in a couple of hours when i get a chance to sneak away from my desk, but.... IF it's still on, what does that mean? needs oil or do i need a new gearbox? If it goes, is all well or should i get it inspected or top up the gearbox oil anyway? Would this be the opportunity to do a manual ox swap if anyone has the parts to sell? Thanks in advance. Deepan
Hi All, I am in need of some help/adice on an issue that has developed over the last few weeks... The car is a 2007 520D with the M47N2 engine. When the car is started from cold, there are fumes that are coming from the the back fothe engine on the air filter side as shown in the following vid: I had the glow plugs rep[laced some time ago as 1 of them was failing. Thereafter I had the car serviced and I am seeing faults come up for all 4 glow plugs, which Ive asked about separately on this forum and people here have suggested that it is a faulty low plug relay. I need to get that replaced. After the car warms up the fumes are no longer present and there is no loss of power or any difference in performance. The only other thing that has been happening for some time now ifs that when cold started, the engine idles but judders slightly here and there like a misfire, if I rev it it goes away for a while then returns, but once the car is warmed there is no more judder, its only present when cold starting. Any ideas? could it be the glow plugs or the relay causing this? I ask this because I think the plugs (possibly relay too) is the only thing that heats up on a cold start, is that right? If so, this could be the only hing that could be getting really hot enough for fumes to develop? Thanks in advance for your replies.
Hi.. I've an 24v 520 with vanos. I've had it for about 10 months now. I've noticed over that time that the car is eager when starting cold.. Starts fine, idles smooth. Might be a little slow to warm up fully, but not worryingly so. I perceive it as normal. As it does get up to "warm" though, it seems to become a bit more docile.. not as eager to rev… However, If I take it down the motorway for say, 30 minutes or more.. when I then get off the motorway it drives with more umphh.. More like when it's just turned over, but all the way up the revs (I try to keep it below 2.5k before it's warmed up).. Is this just because it's 20 years old and done 215K.. Could it be that when the motorway miles have created a more even heat around the engine bay it's all tight again and not as sloppy? Or am I living in dream land? Or is there something I should be looking for, a fault to trace.. It's fired up missing a couple of times over the last 12 months, I've not investigated as it's fine once off 'n' on'd… I'm guessing coil pack. Any thoughts?
