    1998 BMW E39 535i V8 Manual £3500 NE66

Hello, For sale is my 1998 (Pre-Vanos) E39 535i V8, with the rare 5 speed Manual Gearbox, finished in the classy Biarritz Blue. Having been on the look-out for a well-maintained M62 V8 Manual for some time, I jumped at opportunity to acquire this car when it came on the market around 3 months ago. However, I have recently bought another car, and this combined with the fact that I will be working from home for the foreseeable future with no commute, means I cannot justify keeping this car. The car has covered 184K miles with only 2 previous owners. It comes with FSH, MOT until August 2021, and has clearly been well maintained. (There are 19 Service Stamps in the Booklet) There is also a large folder of receipts, showing the extensive maintenance which has been performed on the car over the years. A summary of the most recent / significant work performed on the car (all with receipts to prove): - Recent Engine Oil and Filter change (Sep 2020) - X2 new Avon ZV7 Tyres (Jul 2020) - New Front & Rear ABS Sensors (Aug 2020) - Both Rear Shock Absorbers replaced (Jul 2019) - Front Lower Suspension Arms, Wishbones, Anti-Roll Bar (Sep 2019) - New Bosch Battery (Jan 2019) - Rocker Cover Gaskets (Feb 2018) - Alternator (Feb 2016) - Starter Motor (Dec 2016) - Rear roll-bar links (May 2015) - Coil Pack (May 2015) - Bonnet Respray (Aug 2015) - Alternator (Sep 2011) - Clutch and Flywheel (Feb 2008 – 140k) Cosmetically the car is generally very clean for its age, although there are a few small patches of surface-level rust emerging as is pictured in the photos. Points a new owner would want to address: - The car consumes a very small amount of coolant. Previous owner advised it needs a top-up every 6-800 miles. - Minor oil leak (likely rear main seal) The car is located in Northumberland, NE66. £3,500 ONO
  3. Hi folks, Just picked up my first E39 540i and thought I'd share it here. I'll hopefully get my hands dirty and try to do as much DIY as I could to avoid additional costs with the help of the abundance of information in this forum. Here she is on her first proper drive. Few things on my to do list currently. Sort out squealing on cold start up(I'll try and get a video up) Steering alignment, feels lopsided to the left. Rear sun blinds, have the replacement part but need a guide on how to replace it. All the guides I've found seems to be about retrofitting it. May just have to reverse engineer those guides

    540iA transmission grumble

My 97 540iA has decided to develop a grinding noise when under loading. When you put your foot on the accelerator at cruising speeds there is an awful grinding noise from the transmission. The revs also fluctuate slightly. Once your foot is either lifted off or pressed harder into the pedal the noise stops. It used to only happen at like 50mph in 5th and 30mph in 4th when the car needed to change gear but its not happening more often in a wider range of speeds and gears. The best way to grasp what I'm saying is by listening to the videoIn the video I have my foot on the pedal maintaining a constant speed which causes grinding. Im lifting my foot off and on to make the grinding more noticeable. Pressing too hard results in the car changing into a lower gear which is what I do in the end of the video. Thanks for your time
  5. Hey I'm looking for at least 2 Flat star alloys. Mine are buckled so bad the car gets a nasty vibration. I can come pick them up and obvs put tyres on them.

    540 rear silencer removal

Hi all, I’m finding the exhaust note on my 540i a bit too “refined” for my tastes. I’d like the hear the V8 sound a little more. I’ve watched many rear “muffler delete” videos on YouTube so I know it’s an easy mod to do but it’s difficult to asses how loud the exhaust will be afterwards. I was hoping some people on the forum may have done this themselves and may be able to give further advice. I just don’t want the car to be too loud but I’m also yearning for that V8 to be heard a little.

  9. After a while being away from 5 series I bought back my old 530i. It now needs a master cylinder and I'm wondering if anyone knows for one or an alternative that will fiit. It's an early 1993 E34 530i v8 with an ATE cylinder. The pipe fittings are all the same size, 10mm, not 12 and 10mm like later versions. Do you know if the Girling version is a straight swap, or if a cylinder from a different model in the range will fit, or perhaps from a different series car, like an E28 or whatever?

    New Fiver

Last summer I bought a really rough E39 535i for the princely sum of £450. It had MOT for 9 months, so I've been running it for as long as possible, spending as little as possible on it. It really is not worth fixing, too much wrong with it, but I love the drive so have put a deposit down on a 540i Touring. Here are the ebay pics. Picking it up on Wednesday and can't wait.
  14. Hi all, My mate is looking at purchasing an E38 735 V8 Sport Individual with 136k on the clock as a daily. I have no clue about these cars or in fact V8’s and wanted to get some pointers on what to look out for before we go view it soon. He’s asking for £2000 and this was the last thing he stated; “Its been stood for a couple of months service rust on the discs due to being stood for several months some rust on off side rear arch and since battery went flat traction control light on dash but wil garage to check and clear with mot.” Here are some pics - the specs are in the last few pics. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers Shaz

  16. Hi guys, I need some help please. I'm replacing the water pump on my B10 V8 and managed to loosen it all off and remove all the bolts but it's stuck behind this silver pipe that I can find no reference to The water pump needs to come out somehow but this pipe is stopping it. I can find no reference to the pipe in the TIS, and guides or any youtube vids. It goes across the front of the engine stopping at a vacuum regulator device thing in front of the offside cylinder head and it disappears underneath the cylinder head overhangs just above the exhaust manifolds. What is it and how do I loosen it off to get the pump out please? All help and suggestions gratefully received. The pipe..... The regulator thing.... Disappearing under the nearside head above the alternator....

    M60B30 hesitancy at high revs

Hi all, My 530i V8 is hesitating at high revs (4k plus) which as many of you will know is where it comes alive. It feels like fuel starvation so I'm thinking maybe a knackered pump, or is this a symptom of sulfur from the fuel affecting the dreaded Nikasil lining? It will rev up to the red line, but the burps along the way at high revs are a little disconcerting. Any ideas? Thanks, Rafe

    530i V8 Touring Manual

Hi folks, Just returned to this message board having ran a magazine featured E28 525e with a Fritz manual conversion a couple of years ago. I'm never far from my next BMW purchase despite having dalliances with 2 Porsches (944 and 928) and a (knackered) Alfa 3.0 24V 166 in between. Having left my full time job of 15 years to set up my own Wedding and Portrait Photography business http://www.rafeabrook.co.uk, I needed something practical, interesting and relatively cheap to buy and run, so the 928 had to go! Great car though, and would have gone up in value had I held onto it. So it needed to be a Touring, and as good as E39's are - they're still too common a sight for me and not the classic good looker that the E34 is. I wanted something 20+ years old so I could take it to a few local classic car shows come summer, and condition needed to be such that I wouldn't embarrass myself doing so! As much as I would have loved the 540i engine, I wanted a manual, and it needed to be a Touring. The one E34 540i Touring Manual for sale looked like it needed serious ££££ committing to it and wasn't exactly being given away as the owner clearly knew how few were left. So at the same time, my 530i Touring Manual was up for sale privately in bloody Aberdeen of all places, so I booked a one way flight from Luton and bought it sight unseen. The car drove me home 507 miles without any problem and the description on the eBay ad was honest enough, with the bodywork being the best I've seen on an E34 Touring. It needed the front ant roll bar reattaching, and it's now booked in for an Inspection 2 service as it hasn't been used much this past year (123k from new, full service history, and 1 owner up to late 2013!). There are so few unmodified cherished examples of these cars and I feel blessed to have one of them, despite having only paid £1450 for it! Yes the power of the 540i would have been nice but I couldn't afford to restore one, and the good ones are no doubt being kept by their owners. Rafe
  20. Hi All, I'm not really sure where and how to start this thread but I thought I'd give it a go.... I've always been a fan of BMW's. I don't know why but they've always been cars which I've looked at and thought "I'd love to drive one of those". And now I have two. But that's besides the point. The one car that's always stood out for me personally was the E39, I've always loved the look of it, and still do, even though my current daily driver is a 530d GT. So one day, I thought what the heck, let's get a relatively cheap (up to £1k) E39 to fix, repair and learn. I ended up finding a P reg 1997, BMW 535i (had to be either an M or a V8) with 135k miles on it for £760. What color you ask, Glacier Green (missus is unsure). Also, if anybody could point me to the name of the alloys in the post below, that would be greatly appreciated! You might be by now wondering where I am going with all this: Well, the idea is (as the title suggests) to take it completely apart, add the bits that I want, and put it back together. And this forum has had a massive part to play in all this. The hours I've spent on this forum trying to learn as much as possible about the car is ridiculous. Anyway, back to the car! So what am I planning on doing with it? Well, here is a list: First up; the interior, I didn't much like the standard leather seats so I ended up getting some alcantara ones off flea-bay for £50, along with an immaculate rear bench and door carts. They are in the process of getting fitted as the new seats have the Yellow connector and the old ones were black due to the age of the car, no biggie, plenty of guides avail on here. Also, the seats had a slight rip which I am in the process of repairing. Next step was to disassemble the whole interior (dash, center console and so on), because I want to remove the armrest with the telephone, fit a new gaitor for the handbrake (ordered from Germany) and fix the air con, it isn't working. Oh, and the glove box was damp and the sound deadening material was missing from the top dash! This is about as far as I have got for now, but I am planning on doing a lot more, like fixing the rust on the wheel arch, changing discs/pads (not sure if I should go bigger aka 324mm over 298/6), possibly a suspension overhaul (Eibach?), fix the boot lock, fix the vibrations under acceleration around 30mph, fix the knocking noise under acceleration and do a general service of all serviceable parts. From a bodywork perspective I am looking to upgrade the front to hellas, change the grill and kidneys on the bumper and possibly fix a better yet stock looking exhaust, possibly with the inclusion of an M Sport rear bumper. And potentially terraclean the engine, as emissions seem to have gone up for some reason (possibly cat, need to check). I know i have gone on a bit but I hope to keep all you lovely E39ers (and others of course) up to date on progress. In the meantime, feel free to have a look at my pics (excuse the poor quality, used my phone to take them) and comment, criticize, guide and help me fumble my way along this path of rebuilding the best car ever made (not my words!) Lastly, I hope this project can inspire someone out there to do the same and rebuild one of these modern classics as you won't regret it!!

    Is this an 530 / 540 v8 exhaust?

My Dad's neighbour popped in the other day and said "I have a sports cat for your BMW" and he only wanted scrap money for it so I bought it without seeing it However, its definitely not for a M50 engined e34 and there are no markings on it. Its in pretty good shape but does anyone know what it would be suitable for? A 540 or 530? I'll see about getting some diameters of the pipework when I am back over my Dad's...
