  1. Hi all, long time no post... Anyway, short story version. I went to look at an E61 530i Touring 6 Speed Manual 2007 LCI (269bhp) 110k miles 2 owners (mostly London commuting), plus a few extras from factory etc. Test driving and noticed a funny low end noise, I thought it was bottom end but later (after shooting the video) I realised that the knocking went away when the clutch was pressed in. That led me to Dual Mass flywheel issues but I don't know or what specific mechanisms are envolved or how they are malfunctioning (spring weights etc.). Most noticable heavy knocking on tickover and just after a little rev. Put the clutch in and it goes away. I thought the top end was a bit tappy, more than I would expect and I could detect the engine slightly rocking around. Is this normal for these tuned 530i LCI 2007 onward setups? Can any of you guys have a listen a see what you think, enlighten me? It goes well but this is the first 530i I've test driven. Booted it in 2nd n 3rd and noticed the performance below 3k RPM quite average, though I've never been that impressed with low end torque from BMW 6 cyl petrol engines. Up through 4k RPM and the magic starts to really happen, building nicely until I bail out at 6k RPM.   3. Hi, just purchased an E61 m sport 2008 525i. Wanted to head back to manual after having a 335i touring and a 530d GT both autos. the 8 speed ZF was light years ahead of the old 6 speed in the 335i but much prefer the look of an m sport E61 over the equivalent F10... thoughts? anyway, had to get some work done on it - 6x injectors 6 x spark plugs 1 x NOX sensor 1 x 02 sensor not cheap, but now running like a dream. As for the 525i vs 530i, whilst I haven't driven the 530i I had the 335i. Answer - lacking a little shove between 2k - 4k but was always a little disappointed with the top end of the 335i so not a million miles of in real driving terms. Also with the manual gearbox, it's just so much more engaging. loving it so far... a couple of pics for you all

    LSD conversion for E39 540iT6

    Hi guys I appreciate this is a reasonably discussed topic across the various forums, but the information is a bit dispersed and some of it slightly old. I was hoping to perhaps collate the different options and people's experiences together on this subject. Essentially I'm looking at an LSD conversion project for my '97 540iT. Reasoning for which, is in part, to prepare car for a SC install. Just to add that I'm currently unable to carry out any of the work myself so I'd be relying on either my indy or diff specialist garage. There are, from my research so far, three obvious options available. I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts/experiences on having carried out any of them, or indeed any other options: 1. Swap internals of OEM open diff for those from an E36 M3 EVO LSD. 2. Swap diff for E39 M5 LSD. This requires a little more work, including modifying the driveshaft, which will need rebalancing. https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1767892-E39-M5-limited-slip-differential-swap-into-an-E39-540i 3. Purchase a third party torsen type LSD suitable for the E39. For example: Quaife - UK based company, with a good reputation, from what I've anecdotally heard. Takes less than a day to have the unit swapped. https://shop.quaife.co.uk/quaife-bmw-limited-slip-differential-kit-for-5-series-e39-540i-manual Wavetrac - Based in the USA, so hassle, buying, customs, etc. OS Giken - Japanese based. As such, much more expensive. Bit overkill perhaps, unless you're die hard track enthusiast; I may do the odd hill climb in my touring, but it's not going to get a roll cage and go on the track every week. I guess option 4 is to do both, swapping the final drive for an Msport E36/E39 AND replace the diff for a third party torsen type LSD. Pros of swapping in an E36 or M5 diff: You're swapping the entire final drive unit, so beefier parts, which may well be useful putting the extra horses to the wheels, and you're getting the Msport ratios. Cons of swapping in an E36 or M5 diff: Old LSDs will have an uncertain history, and will often have been taken out of their original cars for a reason. Granted it can be reconditioned, but old ZF design LSDs with only half a dozen clutch plates aren't a great design, compared to more modern variants, and will require a reasonable amount of work to fit into existing subframe and shafts. Even newer BMW LSDs (E46 and upwards), which use the M-variable diffs, which have many more clutch plates, have known issues with weak spur gears. Pros of putting in a new third-party LSD: You know your final drive is working and probably have a history of its use and maintenance. Still able to replace output bearings if damaged (although unlikely). Torsen type LSD, uses gearing rather than clutch plates to provide power. ASC/DSC guaranteed to still work (albeit less likely to kick in as the LSD will be doing a lot of the work). Cons of putting in a new third-party LSD: Retain original crown wheel and pinion and therefore original non Msport ratios (although I imagine this isn't too noticeable - would appreciate any experience of this). I guess I think I've already made up my mind, but I would be interested to get people's thoughts on the forum. Thanks in advance.

    E39 520i-530i Manual

    Hi All, I'm new to this forum, after scouring the classifieds on autotrader/pistonheads/gumtree I thought I'd try and put a wanted post out there. I'm looking for a manual 6 cylinder BMW, 3 or 5 series, under £1,500 - ideally with as few miles as possible, but I am aware the 5's particularly wear their mileage well. I'm based in Oxford and wouldn't mind travelling a little for the right car. If anyone is selling in the next month or so, or knows anyone that is, I would appreciate the feedback! Thanks, SpazaB

    530i V8 Touring Manual

    Hi folks, Just returned to this message board having ran a magazine featured E28 525e with a Fritz manual conversion a couple of years ago. I'm never far from my next BMW purchase despite having dalliances with 2 Porsches (944 and 928) and a (knackered) Alfa 3.0 24V 166 in between. Having left my full time job of 15 years to set up my own Wedding and Portrait Photography business http://www.rafeabrook.co.uk, I needed something practical, interesting and relatively cheap to buy and run, so the 928 had to go! Great car though, and would have gone up in value had I held onto it. So it needed to be a Touring, and as good as E39's are - they're still too common a sight for me and not the classic good looker that the E34 is. I wanted something 20+ years old so I could take it to a few local classic car shows come summer, and condition needed to be such that I wouldn't embarrass myself doing so! As much as I would have loved the 540i engine, I wanted a manual, and it needed to be a Touring. The one E34 540i Touring Manual for sale looked like it needed serious ££££ committing to it and wasn't exactly being given away as the owner clearly knew how few were left. So at the same time, my 530i Touring Manual was up for sale privately in bloody Aberdeen of all places, so I booked a one way flight from Luton and bought it sight unseen. The car drove me home 507 miles without any problem and the description on the eBay ad was honest enough, with the bodywork being the best I've seen on an E34 Touring. It needed the front ant roll bar reattaching, and it's now booked in for an Inspection 2 service as it hasn't been used much this past year (123k from new, full service history, and 1 owner up to late 2013!). There are so few unmodified cherished examples of these cars and I feel blessed to have one of them, despite having only paid £1450 for it! Yes the power of the 540i would have been nice but I couldn't afford to restore one, and the good ones are no doubt being kept by their owners. Rafe
  9. Hi All, I have been having a problem with my E39 darling for a few months now. First to summarise the car : 1) I have had her for 5 years now 2) Has done 245000 miles to date 3) Manual 6 speed gearbox. She still starts first time every time. Had thought I could flush the radiator to get the sludge out however the garage just said no its a headgasket. So no point draining it out. Had a local BMW tech Kev take her apart and check he came back to me saying that there was water pouring out of the front of the cylinder head and diagnosed as uneconomical to repair. I can still drive her however I now have a gallon of water to refill her time to time everyday tbh. My drives are mostly 5 mile journeys and then stop for a few hours then start again. I will post some pictures up for the sludge in the rad, the oil cap has no bubbles etc so this seems to be a one way leak into the coolant system. Just thought i would post this here for anyone in a similar predicament as unfortunately with the prices of these cars going down they are starting to become scrapped left right and center, I really was hoping to keep her for ever.. not meant to be May help you guys diagnose your car.
  10. Hi all, Finally found an E39 sport touring manual 530d!!!!! Very happy with it so far but there are a few things I would like to have on it that it doesn't have - electric folding mirrors being one of those things. The main problem is it needs the off side rear wheel bearing replacing. Can anyone on the forum do this as I would rather keep the money "in the family" as it were. I have seen a video on you tube of a guy doing it - think he is Canadian possibly - he likes using his snap on air hammer! Can anyone give me any advise on how much I should be paying at a garage and or recommend an independent garage?     Hi Guys, Thought I would say hello and intoroduce myself and the new whip. I'll probably copy and paste this if I start a journal. Richard, 23 live on the Kent / London border work in finance. First car: E36 coupe 316i manual stahlblau (Standard) Second: E36 coupe 328i manual stahlblau (Light OEM+ modification) for sale... Third: E39 saloon 530i manual topaz blue: so about the new beemer: Firstly, I think the car is a sport replica as there is no mention of sport on the logbook and the steering wheel is... odd. Will get some interior pics shortly. But the conversion looks to have used genuine parts so i'm not complaining - perhaps you giuys can clarify that. Otherwise in very good condition - only bad points that I have found so far is a few rust bubbles in the petrol cap area under the flap, laquer peeling on steering wheel and armrest and cracked OBC buttons. I'm sure there will be other faults yet though... . 84k with full BMW service History Angel eye rings have been replaced by previous for "white/blue tinge" as opposed to standard "white/yellow" soon to go on private number plate R88 FAL Hope to fit short shift kit as I find gearchanges sloppy compared to the 328, and will probably give the car some light modification. For example, first on my list is to replace the walnut trim for piano glass black items. Other than that, I hope to learn a lot on here and contribute where I can
