  1. I hope I am not duplicating this question that I did not find in the forum, or somehow might have missed to find. Question seems simple, but looks like the answer is complicated and hard to get. Maybe someone here could help (yes, I've already asked Jimmy from Cable Shack): What is the correct Code Reader to use on a 525TDS E39 09/97? I've seen some devices on eBay but I was advised to be careful because this 525TDS may use ADS. The 20pin "pacman" socket is under the hood (no OBD inside), and pin 15 is 12V, so I guess it needs ADS interface. Can someone please help about this and advise about what is the correct cables and devices to use on a USB port of a PC? Thanks.
  2. Hi guys I have a fault on my car suggesting I need a cam position sensor. I've found some here: http://m.mister-auto.co.uk/en/sensor-camshaft-position/bmw-5-e39-520-i-170hp_v15266_g3946.html But it looks like there's 2 types which do I need. Screenshot of fault code attached
  3. E61 530d. I used to change my engine oil with a suction pump on my e34 and e39 and it used to pull all the oil out. However I just tried on my E61 and only got 5 or 6 litres. Is the sump a funny shape that the dipstick tube is not above the lowest point? I guess I'll have to drain it the old fashioned way. Any thoughts?

  5. Hi, I bought myself 2004 E61 to replace my 2001 e39 that I didn't bother doing the swirl flaps on. It bit me. Anyway my android phone, Xperia Z5 pairs and transfers numbers but I'm lucky to get one call before the sound reverts back to the phone with nothing through the speakers. Is this fixable? Or is the bt unit just too old. I guess this is a common problem. Any solution? Cheers.

    Mirrors...

Hi...not long had my 525i se auto in glacier green...really like the car but one thing I don't understand is the nearside electric door mirror keeps on moving to as low a position it will go once I turn the ignition off on my car(I get a nice view of the road)! No matter how I set it...each time I start up or turn off the ignition the mirror heads down!!lol#
  7. I recently got some Philips D2S X-tremeVision HID bulbs for the low beams on my facelift E39. These are 4800K and 150% brighter than normal HID bulbs apparently. They are very bright and are definitely whiter than the 16 year old original OEM bulbs I removed, but they are still a little on the yellow side when compared with the white LED angel eyes I now have installed. I am wondering whether I can expect the D2S XV bulbs to get significantly whiter as they burn in. Also wondering whether anyone has the D2S WhiteVision HID bulbs, which are 5000K. These WV bulbs might be an alternative, but wonder whether they look any different to the XV. I'm really wanting a closer colour match to the angel eyes without losing too much light output performance. Thanks in advance.

  10. I'm thinking about swapping my back bumper as it has a crack in it. Does anyone know if the standard 'Sport' bumper will fit the M5? It looks like the lower middle bit can be swapped out for the M5 version to accommodate the exhausts???

    E39 wiper fitment help..

Just come to change my wipers and noticed that my wipers (only bought last week) for some reason don't have the usual lock and slip off fitment I'm use to on e39's... This seems to have like a clip fitting that you push and slide out? It's this normal...? Anyone know why mine seem to be special? Can I revert to the usual style somehow? Can't find any branded wipers, search on eBay shows some unbranded ones but not sure on quality - don't want to change every few months.
  12. A few of the crapboxes I encountered before finally finding a decent E39 last week, hope you enjoy..... https://thecarsreport.com/buying-a-used-bmw-e39-how-hard-can-it-be

    opinions

Guys, your opinions please? Link This is not my advert, but a car that i'm looking at, and as it's my first ///M car, i'd like some advice please. This seems like a decent enough car, although a few more miles than i'm comfortable with. Thanks
  14. Alloys refurbished and cree leds installed.
  15. Hi Just bought an e39 off here, wondering if anyone can help. The android headunit that came with it has a currupted SD card, so the SAT NAV doesn't work, searched high and low but can seem to find a map to download or install. 16. I have a e39 530i (76000 miles on the clock) with a slight issue. It starts perfectly every time from cold. However after it heats up and I turn it off to go into the shops come back and 'sometimes' it takes a fair few cranks (5-10 seconds) before it starts. Also very rarely it stalls at low speeds, starts up fine though. NO WARNING LIGHTS. I've done A LOT of forum searching and I think it may be a faulty camshaft position sensor and wanted to see if anyone has had a similar issue before I buy an OEM sensor?
  17. Hi there Can anyone help me please. I have a bmw e39 525i manual. The issue that i have is that the car starts fine and drives ok. BUT, sometimes i have flat spots on the acceleration. I loose power sometimes when i try to accelerate. I have heard some popping from the front, mainly in the air filter but not every time. Can anyone tell me what i need to be looking for to fix this issue ? Fuel economy is ok and the car isnt smoking etc or loosing oil, water etc... Thank you
  18. Hi all, As above one of my front PDC sensors has failed. My car is a Nov 2001 build, so looking for a later style front PDC sensor in titanium silver for my E39. Does anyone have/know of one available? Irritatingly all the ebay breakers in Titanium silver are either sports (so black sensors!), not equipped with PDC, or have the earlier sensors! The image attached shows the style of PDC sensor I'm after (i.e. circle within a circle) Thanks guys!

    Insurance

Hi all, many of you may hate the topic, but it's a necessary evil for the safety of the cars and everyone/everything else using our roads. My question being, the awesome people that drive the M5s, what do you pay? Age, Location, 12m Insurance cost. I'm getting ever closer to the idea of selling the touring and getting one, the only thing putting me off, (other than the cost of a decent one being a couple thousand over my budget) is the cost of insurance. I already have an E30 thats got a Turbo conversion and insured for the last three years for up to 400bhp so i'm hoping that comes into consideration when they work out the costs. Thanks Deepan

Cheers guys!
  22. Life's been very busy these last two or three years and I've had precious little time to do anything remotely resembling hobby stuff - particularly on cars and so on. The best I've managed is to buy me an SLK a year ago and I've managed to run around large parts of the UK with the top down and the sun shining. I even got the SLK into a classic car magazine as part of a buyers' guide over the summer. My BMW has been great - reliable, quiet, comfortable and still great to travel in but now I have the SLK I've effectively halved the already small mileage I was doing per year - and it shows. As she is an old-school diesel, she doesn't like short journeys and needs to do lots more miles than she does. Also, as she needs four new tyres, a Inspection 1 service and a new windscreen I felt it was time to put the old girl out to pasture. Therefore, I've been looking around for a petrol replacement. I'd been thinking a 3-series or maybe a C class possibly - even a Jaguar - but looking around it seems that petrol versions of these cars are like hens teeth to find - there are so few! So off we went to a car supermarket to kick some tyres and... my choices were all deemed 'too small' by SWMBO. Apparently none of them had enough room in the back (guess who'd asked our six foot son to come along???) Anyway, instead, we ended up looking at E classes, 5 series, an A6, the Jaguar again, a Passat, a Mazda 6 and others. Just sitting in the cars quickly got us down to three possibilities - the E class, the 5 series and the A6, So I then started looking for real-life petrol contenders to drive. The nearest of seven petrol E classes for sale in the UK was 60 miles away; the nearest of three petrol A6's was over a hundred miles away and the nearest of twenty BMWs was 12 miles away. We tried the E class first and we didn't like it. The ride was too soft and the car wallowed a lot. Oddly, the car (an E350 CGI) also seemed slow to react to steering and acceleration (even in S-mode). Then we looked round for 5 series examples and found a 528i SE fairly close, five years old, 44K on the clock, the right colours and the right major toys (but no sat nav or xenons - both of which will keep me busy as Projects!) and drove it on Sunday. We both felt right at home. Ride, response, the feeling inside, road noise, seat comfort all good. The car has a single tiny stone chip on the bonnet, unmarked alloys, good tyres and was 'reduced - this weekend only'. So we bought it and we pick it up tomorrow. As the garage only offered me a low part exchange for my old girl I've stripped out the stereo and popped the original radio cassette back in. The removed kit (a sub, an amplifier, head unit and cables) I'll sell to help fund my new 5-Series projects.. So it looks like I'm back to stay - and, with the new 5-series arriving, I'll hope to become a more active member once again. So ... Hello again. Savcom
  23. Dear members, I've just joined this forum to seek some technical help with my car. I have owned from new a BMW e39 530i Sport Agean Blue Edition. The car has developed a rough cold start problem that goes away if I switch the car off and restart after a few minutes. My car has done 146,000 miles and has FSH. Once the car is warmed up the problem disappears and the engine is smooth again. The engine at cold start runs very rough feels like it's firing on 3-4 cylinders. I have taken the car to BMW who have checked the fault codes and explained their is a fault with the Hydraulic Actuator Valves. They suggested switching the car off and restarting to reset the engine management system. I have read several forums about this rough cold start problem but I have not yet found what is causing the problem and how to fix it. Can someone please help and advise on diagnostic and remedy. I am quite proficient around cars and know my way around my BMW that my children call "toothless" after the character in how to train your dragon. I don't have any fancy diagnostic computer tools. I have checked and replaced the following: Spark plugs Coil packs Valve cover gasket CCV valve and vacuum pipes down to the dip stick. Replaced the DIAS (I think that's what it's called? Attached to the side of the intake plenum) Checked the MAP sensor, working fine checked for vacuum leaks around the throttle body, all looks fine I have read on one thread to replace the Inlet Air Temp sensor located in the Plenum and the MAF sensor. Has this worked for anyone?? Any help from members who have solved this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Well I just bought this! E39 530i

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252562599365 Coming from subaru I forgot how nice bmws are to drive. I think I got a great deal as it's had quite a bit of the common work done to it. My next jobs are going to be to fit a double din Bluetooth stereo with new speakers etc. 2 new rear tyres soon and I noticed a hollow sounding bump from the rear when I went over a speed bump near me Sounded like the spare wheel jumped up In the boot but it's all secure? Also where would the locking nut be if it had one?in the toolkit? I haven't had chance to have a real good look at anything yet,but knew from the drive, the receipts and the condition of the car that it was a good one. Only 81k. The forum is being extremely slow.
