Can power folding mirrors become out of sync?

As suspected, I got it all apart today to spray in some lithium grease and found the cog to be worn down in the same way @greenelekta described. Only worn in patches, which I suppose explains the tendency for the mirrors to occasionally travel half way. Ordered replacement cogs from eBay. Will pop them in once they arrive. Thanks again for all the help!

Followed your advice to "help" along one of the mirrors after pressing the button. Lo and behold they started moving again! Looks like both mirrors move in sync now, but the passenger side is still giving me gyp. It occasionally clicks as it travels between in/out positions, and when it reaches the fully inward position, it stops for a second and has a little squeal. Any ideas? Time to replace the cog?

Disconnected the battery for a couple of hours, but the button is still unresponsive Will try folding them out as recommended. Thing is, when I do that, they click and then become very loose and floppy. I guess it's because the motor has disengaged.

Can power folding mirrors become out of sync?

Amazing! Thanks for the pictorial, will go looking for some motorcycle chain grease. All I have here is copaslip, which I guess will work but not ideal. On a side note: does anyone know if there's an easy way to identify power folding mirrors at a glance? There are lots of "E39 mirrors" on eBay, and I wouldn't mind snapping up a power folding one for a good price.

Can power folding mirrors become out of sync?

Yeah I read about this on another forum. Is there a way to reset it? I left the car overnight and it’s still not working, seems a bit random when it starts working again.

Haha oh man I’ve just had my door cards off! Should’ve thought about that before

Thanks for this! Didn’t realise they were plastic teeth. I’d better have another look and make sure. I’ve been reluctant to remove the entire wing mirror, but it looks like it’s a hell of a lot easier to get at the gears if you do!

Can power folding mirrors become out of sync?

Just went to have a go, and now neither mirrors seem to respond to the button at all. This did happen before after I’d been tinkering, and I think it might be some kind of failsafe. Last time, the mirrors just started responding again after I left it a day or so. Maybe they just need a rest

Thanks both! Will give this a go. So I need to fold the faulty one in while leaving the working one out, and then operate the button? I sprayed some standard oil in there last night to lubricate the parts. Couldn’t see anything broken, and the cogs didn’t look too worn.
  10. Hi there, My 530i has the electric folding mirrors, which up until recently were working pretty well (considering their age!) However, I lent my car to my old man for a few weeks, and he said the passenger mirror was sticking. He sprayed some WD40 in there and pushed it in manually, and it hasn’t quite been the same since The motor seems to be working ok (I can hear it) and taking apart the mirror this evening I couldn’t see any obvious signs of wear (the gears seem to have their teeth). When pressing the button, the passenger mirror makes a loud buzzing sound like it’s trying to move. If I gently push it at the same time, it starts moving under its own steam. Doing this a couple of times to ‘sync’ the mirror with the drivers side - so they both try to fold in or out at the same time - seems to temporarily fix the problem. But eventually it stops working again, and it almost seems as though the motor is trying to advance the mirror beyond it’s designed route of travel (ie folding in or out too far) and that’s when it strains the motor. This got me thinking that the car may think the mirror is folded in, so tries to fold it out further than it’s supposed to, if that makes sense. When the mirror stops working, I’ve noticed that it ends up in a kind of “floppy” state, where it moves even with a slight breeze. Does anyone know how these things work? Is there some kind of reset procedure to get both mirrors in the same state? I’ve tried searching, but can’t find anyone else with this specific problem. Thanks in advance!

    Diagnosing an odd A/C sound

I actually had it done while visiting family up north, so I didn’t use your recommendation. That said, I’ve made note of it so I can use them in future!

    Diagnosing an odd A/C sound

Update: Had the aircon regassed and the sound is gone! The guy said it had some residual pressure left in the system, but it was pretty much depleted. Fingers crossed the sound doesn't come back.

    Whine from Aircon

I had a strange noise coming from my air con recently - I posted a video of the sound in this thread. To my surprise, refreshing the air con (regas, bit of antibacterial treatment) seems to have solved the problem. It could perhaps be due to low pressure in the system.

Rough idle after new breather valve

Thanks both! Took it back to the garage at the weekend and it turns out they'd disconnected the hose at the other end of the breather valve - I believe it's an intake hose. Because of the position of the hose, it meant taking apart a whole lot of engine to actually reach in and push the hose back on. Not great, but I didn't have to pay for it.

Rough idle after new breather valve

Hi there, Recently had a new fuel tank breather valve fitted at the garage, as I was getting an engine management light and code P0444. The part was a febi bilstein aftermarket. When I picked it up from the garage I noticed the engine light was on. I figured this might just need resetting. Haven’t got my code reader with me right now, so can’t double check or clear the engine light just yet. That said, since getting it back from the garage, I’ve noticed a couple of things. Firstly, it seems a lot quicker on the acceleration. Just tapping the throttle seems to give it considerably more gas than before. It also seems like the idle is a little rough compared with before; a bit ‘lumpy’ as my old man described it. I plan to drop back into the garage to ask them to take another look, but I thought I’d get an opinion from the experts on this forum too. Could it be that the bad breather valve was causing slower acceleration and a slower idle than before, and this is just the norm? It’s entirely possible that I’m just being paranoid. As always, any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks!
