  1. Well. I've done over a year with the touring, and as much as I can say it's a lovely car to drive, it's also been a massive pain in the arse. Maybe this is just BMW's, but I've never had a car that needed so much fettling. Even my old Jeep Cherokee in Dubai cost me less to run around, and that was older and took a lot of shit. From memory, and I haven't added it all up yet (for fear of shock), since buying it, I've had the following replaced. Some I knew about before buying, but others have happened out of the blue. Front link arms Valve cover gasket. Twice. Valve cover 2 x coilpacks Water pump Radiator Fan Viscous coupling Fan shroud Belts Oil filter gasket Front brake pads and discs Rear ABS sensor 2 x services (oil and coolant) That's the stuff the garage has done, as I'm not competent enough to do it myself (or have the space/place to work). Then there's various bulbs, water pumps, rust removal and respray that I've done, and the cost of buying 5 litres of oil every 6 weeks to keep it topped up. I'm about to replace the FSU hedgehog myself as the blower isn't working. The AC has a leak, and the power steering has a leak. Normal for an old car. Keep 'em topped up. I've just had the sills checked, and they're ok, but I will look at Lanoguarding it before winter, and there's a hole in the floorpan OSR which we just noticed which will need patching up. This is my first Beema. I didn't want to die stupid by not owning one, but good God they need work. Fair play to it, it is a daily driver, has only broken down twice, but I have piled on over 15, 000 miles in it since I bought it. Am I just unlucky, or is this normal for a car its age? Nick

    E10 fuel causing EML

I just had an EML on mine too, citing fuel trim and a MAF sensor issue. I've just replaced the MAF for a Pierburg, and put E5 in straight away. No issues. Put some E10 in, and hey presto. EML. Cleared the code, put E5 in, and there's no more EML, but this will be something I'm keeping an eye on.

    Mass airflow sensor

So I need to change my mass airflow sensor. I realise getting a good one means better mpg, emissions etc, but I'm confused about whether i should totally avoid low price. I can't justify over £150 on a part, so i pulled a list of whats available. I'm looking £100 tops. I think the original on the car is Hella. Ive not checked yet. If any of you have nothing better to do for the next 5 minutes, could you take a look at this lot and let me know what would be a good one to get? https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/car-brands/spare-parts-bmw/5-e39/15270/12906/mass-airflow-sensor-airflow-meter.html?pg=2 Ta, Nick

    Quite..

    E39 blower

So, the heater and a.c. blower has stopped working. Before I replace the FSU, I thought I'd check fuses 76 and 76 to see if they're blown. Do I need to remove the glove box to get to them? I've already had a dig around, pulled off the bit of plastic by the vent, but can't see them. Is removing the two retaining straps to let the box drop down enough to get at them?

    Mass airflow sensor

34 mpg cruising.. happy with that.

    Mass airflow sensor

I bought a Pierburg and just fitted that. Let's see how that all goes. Was getting 30-31mpg unclipped. Will be interesting to see what I get with a new one back in.

    E39 blower

Embarrasing schoolboy error. I've just fixed the heater issue. I hadn't pushed the FSU and power clip on hard enough. All back to normal. Duh.

    Winter's coming...

Any tips for underbody treatment for an E39 to prevent winter having a field day underneath? I don't want to Waxoyl (or equivalent) it. Cheers, Nick

    Nice one.. thanks.

    E39 blower

Not done much on the blower fixing this week. There is air coming through the vents on a very low speed. Increasing the blower speed doesn't make any difference. At least there's some warm air in the car though. I'm going to check the power to the blower relay, IHKA and the FSU, based on a really helpful tutorial from Pelican Parts, using fuse jumpers on the relay and FSU connector. I'm really hoping it's not a bad blower motor.

    Mass airflow sensor

Cheers guys. That was going to be my next question. Who are the good brands? I saw a Hella for around 70, and a Pierburg for 100.. Will check them out.

Will be replacing the faulty maf tomorrow though.. not a good idea to drive long distances unplugged?

So... with the new DISA valve, leaving the faulty MAF unplugged and a load of E5 in the tank, I got an unprecedented 33mpg to work today!

Thanks Huff. Am getting a Varta fitted at a garage now. I don't have time to order one myself and fit it, and rely on the kindness of friends to jump start me given my schedule over the next couple of days.

Disa valve all changed for the x8r kit. My first bit of engine repair myself. Quite chuffed. Let's hope that all holds. The original one wasn't in bad nick at all, but given the horror stories, best change it. Now I need a new bloody battery as mines dead. Oh joy.

When you say give it a spin, how exactly do you do that?

    E39 blower

Meyle.. Will check the power to it. Bloody cars.

    E39 blower

Bollocks. Cheers Ray. 4 to 5 hour job it seems from what I've read here before. I don't know what to say now. This could be enough for me to sell it on. Getting fed up with something a month happening to it. I can now say I've owned an E39, but I just don't have the skills or the money to run one.

    E39 blower

Nothing is blowing through at all Ray. Turn it on and up to max, and there's no air coming through at all.

    E39 blower

Right.. I obviously want paying attention yesterday. Didn't run the blower enough to notice it's not actually working. New FSU, but no heat or AC. Fuses next?
  25. Nick E

What did you do to your E39 today ?

Changed the FSU. Not fiddly at all.. Glad to have a heater and AC back!
