Where do you guys get parts from?

i buy it from wherever is competetive. I use the online catalogues for the OEM providers and manufacturers i trust (Mahle, Hella, ATE, Meyle, Febi, Bremi, etc..) and then search for the part number in the usual places. a bit of cross referencing can save you £££'s in the long run.

We've all been there or are going to be in this position.. It's an original hella, would be good to try and make it watertight again.

Oh yeah I agree. It's all something I'm weighing up. I have an understanding but no previous practical experience. And that's the point.. I'd like to learn from it. It owes me about £2k it will sell for about £1200 I suppose with a years mot? I dunno. Maybe you're right and I should cut it loose and spend the money on another car.

Not really a sleeper. It's a 523 so even if I get, say, 30bhp it takes me to a decent 528 lol

So not done anything as such. I had been thinking of selling it but the paint is in such bad shape I'd provably take such a £ hit its not worth it.. I originally bought it as a Lockdown project so I'm thinking I might carry that on.. So.... Turbo?

Be careful re those ebay sellers from Eastern Europe Post brexit.. You might get stung with some extra customs tarrif from the courier. I'm not sure what the Lithuanian situation is though.

Couple of days ago I finally got round to fixing the bonnet release mechanism. Luckily no cables damaged, just the catch and spring needed unbolting and cleaning with loads of brake fluid. A liberal regrease, bolted back in and all is good again.

What did you do to your E39 today ?

Did thermostat, belts and pulleys last year for first time.. It's really not that bad. Easiest car i've ever done it on. Take your time, have a cuppa handy. The only pain in the but for me was how long it took to bleed the air when refilling the coolant. Not done the oil filter gasket yet. Be interested to hear your thoughts.

    Roll Cab bargain

Hi, I recently ordered this 7 drawer Kennedy Roll Cab from Zoro. https://www.zoro.co.uk/shop/storage-and-handling/roller-cabinets-and-tool-chests/green-7-drawer-professional-roller-cabinet/p/ZT1018241X Top rubber mat is usually £13 by itself. Turned up today and I'm very impressed with it and it is a definate bargain for £150. 100% recommended. Use code welcome10 if it's your first order and you'll save 10%

I don't think the cover is replaceable but the cubby with "shutter" is a replaceable part, I've seen them on eBay. Look at this on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E39-5-Series-1995-2003-Center-Console-Storage-Box-Trim-Cubby-5116-8159698-/264996330926?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

What did I do? Gave it a damn good run to my mums cos her battery died put her polo on the ctek overnight. I do enjoy my car, for the cheap, ratty hack that it is, it's sounds good and is just good cheap fun.

Never trust ebay compatibility. Use the parts manufacturer website catalogue. Meyle have one. I use it for all manufacturers and then just search for the part number. Best way to save money

Cheers. Defo no rattle. I can get an LUK clutch kit for less than £100. It LOOKS as easy ish job but the only clutch I've ever done is on a 309 gti abiut 18 years ago!

What have I done today? Driven it, quite a bit recently in fact. It passed its mot just before Xmas and we moved house just after so it's been very useful. Not had much time to spend on her though as we also had car trouble with our family car (2015 citroen picasso ) so have bought a 2002 Focus for the wife to get to work in and move the kids about if needed. The focus require a little tlc so the focus.. Has been my focus. Sadly though, the bmw's clutch is starting to slip. Am I right in thinking its a DMF on these?

If there is one thing I've learnt with obd readers... Don't buy them on ebay! Bought 2,both clones (fakes). I mean they work but quality isn't great. Screens not aligned properly. Photocopied instructions, not upgradable. Won't do it again.

    Bonnet release

It's on the list it passed mot 2 days before we moved house so we've had out hands full but I'll be doing that maybe tomorrow.

    Bonnet release

I think the issue I have is the lever doesn't pull enough to operate the cam action of the latch.. If that makes sense? The cables pull ok (for now) but latch doesn't release the bonnet.
