    Appreciating Asset?

It certainly did. Picked it up last week and so far I’m very impressed. Build quality, ride and refinement are BMW level. The technology and performance are addictive. The user interface (which was my biggest worry having used I drive for ever) is intuitive and slick. It’s even exactly as efficient as it’s advertised, which is a novelty after ICE ownership. The instant performance is epic, if this is the future, that’s fine by me.

So the G31 went in today. I’ve had it 2 years, 11k miles and got £250 less than I paid for it AUC. The used market is nuts at the moment. It was a 17 plate.

The latest ones are double glazed and much better. But I’d say more 3 series than 5. The smooth power train and ride is 5 series premium mixed with 3 series agility.

Try Arnold Clark too, they’re offering top prices. I went white, but wish I could justify red (but for £2k extra that’s frankly ridiculous). If you do order, I’d keep yours and keep an eye on the WBAC price (as a guide). Mines actually gone up over the last month! If they do start to slide, just sell it then. Have you looked at the service costs of Tesla? Basically nothing…. They’re a compelling package currently. The new i4 looks competitive but it’s much more expensive.

That’s precisely what I’ve done. Model 3 Standard Range Plus ordered in August and due for delivery at the end of this month. If you haven’t already, have a test drive. That made my mind up. Also watch this YouTube channel for some real insight into ownership, range and performance. https://youtu.be/qgBdUGH9xqI https://youtu.be/jYsSza_bd4s

    Bike carrier

I’ve been using this for years. Is a 3 bike but you can add a fourth with another attachment. Has been taken to Europe and around the UK. It tilts back to allow access to the boot even when loaded. Highly recommended. https://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4_tab.php/car-specific-accessories/atera_strada_sport_m_3_to_4_bike_carrier_no_ar2685/Qx%40w%2C6M42VAwp3%40Rb%7B~cC4ure5iWX2

We owned a 1.5 gen Nissan Leaf and it was fast charged a dozen times a year. We had it for 3 years and when we sold it at about 40,000 miles the battery hadn’t degraded noticeably (it still gave the same range estimates and hadn’t “lost segments” on its display, which is how that car demonstrates degradation). They’re certainly not like phone batteries (my iPhone shows loss after only a year). Back on the original topic, BMW are keen enough to buy my car, offering the same as WBAC. I’d guess they’d retail it for more than I paid.

The interface is definitely marmite. I suspect it’s really designed for Autopilot running (easier to watch YouTube than adjust your mirrors). I’m a fan of buttons normally. But I’ve seen that the voice controls work pretty well so that’ll probably be my fallback. Once I’m driving I only really tend to swap between Comfort and Sport Modes in my BMW, looking for extra performance at times. I don’t even swap music once it’s playing.

I have to say, I test drove a Model 3 for an hour. The build quality and interior were very good, at least superficially. It felt just as premium as BMW. The performance was excellent and the ride/handling good too. I know a good car when I drive one, and the Model 3 exceeded my (fairly high) expectations. I immediately wanted one. I’ve done plenty of research and the mixture of battery range/charging speed/efficiency are top notch. It’ll take a while to get used to the user interface but it felt like the future. I was left feeling that the Tesla is the iPhone of the current market. If you want one, there’s very little reason not to buy one.

I think the i4 will be a better car than the Tesla, but not the extra 25% it’d cost me. Plus the Tesla Supercharger Network is a real benefit, although Elon has proposed making it usable by other manufacturers soon. Whilst this would be a benefit to the majority of other brands out there, it’d be annoying to be sat in a queue of non Tesla’s waiting for an empty one.

That’s a stunning looking car. My wife is 3 years into a 4 year pcp on a Mini Clubman. She only put £500 in as a deposit. She’s just agreed a trade in with £6k equity! She’s ordered a new Mini Electric Cooper S. They’ll retail her Mini for the same price she paid 3 years ago. If you sell your car and can use the equity to get a brand new one this is an amazing opportunity. My 17’ G31 520d is already in positive equity after only 2 years. I considered the new i4 40, but the deals aren’t really good yet. Instead I’ve ordered a new Tesla Model 3. I would’ve liked to stay with BMW but the opportunity to try something new is too good to miss.

    BMW Sytner (Leicester)

I tend to agree. I think we’ve seen an unusual uptrend in used prices that will be a positive for most on finance agreements. The flip side is the obvious equal increase in the prices of used stock. So my usual search for a 2 year old cars may prove fruitless and I may end up in an older car next time around.

I wonder if there’ll be a sharp downward correction or will the market simply resume its normal downward trajectory? If it’s truly down to chip supply, that’ll slowly improve, suggesting the latter. Could be interesting at the end of PCPs for most, as the cars will be worth more than forecast.

    Price of replacement brakes (540i)

I bought parts from Eurocarparts for my (non M Sport) brakes. The M Sport we’re definitely more expensive. I went for Brembo replacements and notice they’re less dusty.

    Great - buckled wheels

I hope so! Could be a bargain nearly new.

    Great - buckled wheels

I honestly think my first 330i E46 was better quality inside than the G20. No fancy gimmicks and less stylish but it felt more solid and plush. I get that they’re offering way more car and technology nowadays, but they need to keep the quality high or risk losing out to the new kids on the block……Genesis G70 Shooting Brake anyone???

    Great - buckled wheels

Agreed, I had a G20 loaner a few months back. I seriously thought I might look at one to replace my G31 in a years time. But the cabin quality was a real let down. I’m not a huge fan of the latest digital dash either. The pre LCI dash is less cluttered and more elegant. I could only see myself upgrading to a newer G30/31 in the future.

    G31 SE rear ride height

I thought 632 was Sport suspension? The standard was 642?
  19. Lord Farquad

    G31 SE rear ride height

Finally got around to measuring today and although it looks high, it’s around the 642mm mark that it should be for an SE on 19’s.

    G31 SE rear ride height

Thanks Matt, I’m up in the North West otherwise I’d take you up on the offer. I’ll investigate further.

    G31 SE rear ride height

I have to admit I’ve looked back at photos of my car from 18 months ago and the rear looks way higher now! I’ll have to measure it on flat ground (my drive slopes downward) to see how far out it is. Any ideas how it goes out of spec? If it’s digital I don’t understand how it can vary over time? If (as I suspect) it is now wrong I’ll have to look at my options. Is it something I can rectify at home? If so what software/hardware would you recommend?
  22. Lord Farquad

    G31 SE rear ride height

I think that’s right. My 2017 G31 SE on 19’s has about 3 inches. With the state of the roads I’m grateful for the compliance. I’ve no idea if it can be altered but I’d imagine only via coding or physical changes.

New g31 owner tyre setup question

I have a G31 520s SE with staggered 19’s. It doesn’t need the 275s to tame its power but I stuck with the sizes rather then buying new wheels. I like the look of the 19’s which add presence to the SE in my opinion. I did change from RFT to non-RFT keeping the same Goodyear Eagle F1 Aysmetric 3s which I’ve found good in all weathers. The non-RFT are definitely quieter and absorb more high frequency bumps (the sharp thumps you get on broken roads). I do notice a slight decrease in handling precision but it’s worth the trade off for my driving. Be careful messing around with tyre sizes with an xdrive, they can be very sensitive. Make sure all 4 tyres are very close on wear rates as it can bugger your transfer case. We use xdrives in work on a square 17’ set up and they’re way less tyre wear sensitive to a larger staggered one.

Run-flats are now optional on M Sport

I swapped my G31 SE 520d to non RFT last year. 19’s staggered no adaptive suspension. Stuck with Goodyear Eagle F1 Aysmetric 3’s and they’re great. Noticed a reduction in noise and high speed frequency bumps (the sharp ones). Handling is slightly less sharp unless I add an extra 2 psi over the recommendation of iDrive. Given most my driving has been around the city, over potholes and broken roads, I’m pleased I made the change.

    Michelin Problems

I’ve moved to non RFT Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3s on my G31 on staggered 19’s. They’re noticeably more supple than the RFT versions, quieter and offer good grip wet and dry. I’m normally a Pirelli guy but these suit the G31 really well.
