    F11 Diff oil

Well after a bit of research I've found this Castrol oil at Opie oils Specified for, among others BMW (Non-Limited Slip Rear Axles) According to Service Instruction 33 01 96 (149) . Surely that can't do any harm.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Mine is at 109000 now so probably well overdue. There's a video in an old thread on here saying rather than BMWs lifetime fill fallacy it's best to change the diff oil every 30000km

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

I left the F11 at my nearby BMW friendly garage today to have a new fuel filter (Mann item from Autodoc) fitted now the old one is 33000 miles old. Also had the alignment checked as I'd noticed the car starting to squirm around a little when moving across centre lines during overtaking or drastic camber changes. I'd also asked them to change the diff oil while the car was on the ramp but they rang me later to say the only oil they could put in was genuine BMW stuff which is £80 per litre Apparently the only info BMW will give them is the part number, they won't divulge the spec of the oil required but warn using anything else will result in a destroyed transmission. I'm sure that's not quite right so will go and start another thread on that subect. At least I got my fuel filter and alignment sorted and the car is driving a lot better now. They held off charging me until I decide what to do about the diff oil.
  4. I ordered a new Arnott air spring for my car today. It's started sitting down occasionally at one corner depending on where it's parked and will predictably do it if I park in a certain spot at work or facing a certain way outside our house. I'm presuming it's the air spring starting to go. If not I'm sure it won't be long before it does as it's an original BMW one with 74500 miles on it. The opposing one was replaced a while ago so I'm just going to change it and see what happens. Can anyone tell me the size of the nut on the fitting securing the pipe to the air inlet on the spring? I'm going to hazard a guess at 8mm. I've read a few threads and seen videos on how to change the spring but don't recall any mention of the size of the nut. I'd like to make sure I have everything to hand before starting. If it's smaller than 8mm I can feel a trip to Screwfix coming on. I guess a small adjustable spanner would do the job...?

I forget exactly how much I paid for mine but pretty it was somewhere around £450 for a full set of discs and pads. I got them from Euro Car Parts on a 50% or so off sale price. If your price is for discs and pads that doesn't sound too bad. I'm sure you know anyway but never pay the full price on ECP as they're always artificially inflated to make the 'sale' prices seem more attractive.

    Tyre Gunk?

    I forgot the link https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AirMan-Universal-Tyre-Sealant-450ml-Valve-through-Replacement-Car-Sealant-/251303449748?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

    Tyre Gunk?

I bought an Airman tyre sealant following a recommendation from another forum contributor here. It's remained in the boot still in its wrapper so I can't comment on the effectiveness but by all accounts they're excellent. Tyre fitters love them because the gunk just washes out of the tyre with water. I've got an old 12v pump made by Ring which I use to keep the tyres at the right pressures and has got me home on the few occasions I've picked up a slow puncture with nails/screws

Good choice. I had Brembos fitted a while ago. I've done 40000 miles on them up to now and still plenty left. No issues with them at all. I don't remember mine being handed though. Do you have the 'high speed braking' option?

    Front wiper blade replacement

I got my last set here... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bosch-Aerotwin-Flat-Blade-650-450-A524S-Front-Windscreen-Wiper-Blades-Pair-Set-/302826307526?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286 Rears available on there as well btw. I appreciate you've ordered yours now but to anyone else looking a word of advice, don't buy them from Autodoc unless you have a left hand drive car. I ordered some from from there along with some other stuff in order to bump the cost above the threshold for their free postage. They sat around in the garage for ages until I decided to fit them and realised the fittings were on the wrong way round with no way of changing them. I was able to send them back, got refunded and bought the EBay ones. I suppose it was to be expected considering they're a German based company and all the parts come from their warehouse in Germany but I'd assumed their system would recognise my cars VIN as being RHD.

    Oil Change or not

Absolutely not. Put the money towards fuel for your trip.

    Rear shock dust covers

Not me I'm afraid. I did get new ones fitted when my rear shocks were replaced but I didn't do the job myself. Actually I've noticed at least one of mine is looking quite the worse for wear again so I might look into it and post up a DIY How-To if I decide to tackle them myself. My front gaiters both have splits in them but they're going to have to wait.

    F10 door corrosion

I had all four doors done. The whole door was painted and the adjoining parts of the wings blended to keep it as inconspicuous as possible. It probably depends which dealer is doing the job. There seems to be some inconsistency in levels of service depending on where you go. I think I was luckier than some on here. IIRC I was told if the corrosion returns before the 12 year corrosion warranty expires they'd just replace all the affected doors.
  14. Welcome to the forum, and to F11 world. You've made a good move on both counts. You have some nice options there. I'm quite happy with my M-sport seats but would love to try Comfort seats. I hear there's no going back once you experience them.

    DIY F11 air spring replacement

It's much easier to see the deterioration once they're off the car. See my photos further up the thread. I had to buy a decent jack and stands to do mine but as the Indy specialist I was dealing with had quoted 2 hours labour just to diagnose the fault they almost paid for themselves straight away and I've since more than recouped the initial outlay using them on other jobs.

    F10 door corrosion

I'm having a quiet day at work so just sneaked out to check mine. They were done almost 2 years ago but so far there's no sign on any reappearance

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

I had no idea the car had been used as a tow car. After reading your comments I had to take the panel off again to check. Difficult to get a decent shot of the area behind the bumper without removing the bumper itself. I wasn't going to those lengths today but did remove the centre panel again and tried a shot through the gap on the O/S corner. I think the bar your talking about is the part that looks like a mini girder in the bottom half of the photo. I guess there's no certainty the car actually had a tow-bar fitted. The original panel might've been damaged and replaced replaced with a used item taken from a tow car. The main thing is the bar looks to be in place.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Following Matthew and Andrews comments above I removed the panel again this morning to have a closer look at what's behind. I took photos of the rivets which were on the car. No idea if they're originals but they feel slightly tighter that the Ebay ones I bought. 13mm socket included for scale.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

I didn't take any earlier. It's raining and dark now. I'll try to get one for you tomorrow but they're very similar to these I bought from EBay in case I needed to replace any. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10x-BMW-MINI-WHEEL-ARCH-LINING-PANEL-BUMPER-SILL-SKIRT-CLIPS-RIVET-0025-/142489440541?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286 My car has the oblong holes as well but these rivets seem a good fit.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Definitely. I have a basic set bought for just over a fiver. I used this one today to remove the rear bumper centre panel. I'd noticed the panel had come away slightly from the o/s corner where it meets up with the corner of the bumper. There was an uneven gap which had appeared recently for no apparent reason I could see so I went to remove the expanding plastic rivets from underneath to remove and refit the panel. That was easy enough but although I was expecting to find 4 rivets there were only 3 and I found some alterations had already been made to the panel. Not sure why anyone would want to cut this piece out. Perhaps a previous tow-bar related modification? Also the locating tab which fits into the o/s corner looked a bit scuffed. The edge wasn't as sharp as the others so maybe that's why it had popped out in the first place. There are also some scrapes in the paint on the bottom edge I've never noticed before so maybe this is some previous damage only just coming to light. Anyway I've cleaned a lot of gunk from behind and refitted the panel. After a bit of trial and error I got it back into place. It's all straight now with everything located where it should be.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Yes, it's definitely the leather. That previous photo wasn't the clearest. here's a better one. There was a bit of dirt on there but after cleaning you can see there was a lot more going on. The surface looked like it had completely worn away in places. I had some colour restorer from LTT Leathercare lying around so I tried using a bit of that. Not too bad a result. It's not an invisible repair though. You can tell the surface grain has gone just by looking and the repaired area has a rougher feel but the colour match is not bad at all. I'll see how it goes. If it starts to look bad again I'll see if that Ebay seller can help with a replacement.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

That's useful info so thanks for that. I'm going to message them and see if I can get a replacement for my armrest which is starting to look a bit tatty around the handle area. I'm hoping that part is available separately rather than being part of the whole door card.

Here you go... Really very easy once you get the car jacked up. Just a few basic tools needed.

    F11/N47 Preventative Maintenance

Oh, and if the rear suspension airbags are the original ones you can expect them to need replacing quite soon. They might last a while but will be near the end of their life by now.

    F11/N47 Preventative Maintenance

If you're not already familiar with it you should have a look at the Yellow Grommet issue as detailed in this somewhat lengthly thread... It doesn't cost much, if anything to sort out but is well worth paying some attention to as it could save you a lot of agro.
