Test drove these two cars today

That was my feeling too, especially given the state of the brake discs. I reckoned £15000 - £15500 would be a fairer price.

I didn't notice any smell, pulling to one side or other signs of binding so they probably would clean up and improve a little with some enthusiastic use. I think I'd only be totally happy it they replaced the discs.
  3. There seem to be far more M Sports around than SEs just now so I'm reconsidering my options, subject to test drive. As long as it has 18 inch wheels and the suspension is not rock hard I might compromise. I've seen this car advertised on BMWAUC. It seems to be rather lacking in tasty options but is relatively low mileage so might make a sensible purchase from a reliability point of view and also be easier to sell on in three years with another 50000 miles on the clock. What do you all reckon? If I could get it for £16000 with two years comprehensive warranty would that be a reasonably good deal? CP

    F11 530d M Sport Touring potential purchase

The audis are quite appealing in lots of ways but by all accounts I've read are less engaging ro drive than a 5 series. I'm going to get a drive in one before I buy anything just so I know for sure

That's interesting. Maybe it's nothing to do with the seats at all. I might be test driving a couple of M Sports later today so will be paying close attention to the driving position. It's going to be interesting. One M Sport on 18s with variable damping and the other on 19s with M Sport damping.

Ah ok. I found that item number still for sale but it's not at Evans. It's at Car Store in Livingston, a white 14 plated luxury model. Sound familiar?

I also have no idea what a Mother In-Law hatch might be. I think we should be told.

Is it still up for sale? I'd be interested to know if only to keep me from a wasted journey to view it. PM me a link if you like...?

Interesting to read the Audi/Mercedes related comments above. I'd considered an A6 Avant of some kind and a C250D but after a bit or research the only car that really interests me just now is an F11 530d. I've mostly had manual cars previously with only brief forays into auto world during my ownership of a Rover SD1 V8 and a Jaguar XJ6. I never liked either of those 'boxes and much preferred driving the manual Rover I had at the same time. Indeed both those cars put me off autos altogether but I'm sure modern auto 'boxes are a long way from such antiquated machinery so I'm looking forward to getting to grips with some newer technology.

They wouldn't be my choice. Something else to factor in to any negotiations.

Yes that is interesting. VDC is on of the options I think I really want. I'm not totally sure though and need to drive cars with and without it to know for sure. One thing for sure is I don't want to have to pay for a new set of variable dampers if they go wrong. BFleming, have you driven a non VDC 530d? Is there a big difference?

    F11 530d M Sport Touring potential purchase

Quite. Options only add value if they're seens as desirable by the person buying the car. SuperDave's comment struck a chord with me. All else being equal I'd pay more for a car without panroof.

Lol, me too. I did get to drive a hire car with reversing cameras a while ago and can see them coming in useful but being a professional driver I think they're one option I can manage without I was told by a dealer yesterday that the only difference between the standard auto 'box and the sports option is the paddles on the steering wheel. Is that right? I thought it sounded a bit much, especially as it's not quite what I really want and in the end things are only worth what people a willing to pay. I'll keep this one in mind and might travel down to see it in a week or so but there will be some negotiating to be done.

That does look like a good car yes but I'm set on having the 258bhp motor. I agree options aren't everything. Much better to have a car you know has been treated well. Trouble with used cars is that can be difficult to ascertain. Take your point re resale as well but I guess everyone is looking for their own unique ideal car.

I'd be trying to negotiate at least an extra year of AUC warranty. Not sure how likely they'd be to agree to that but no harm asking.

    Engine temp/fuel economy/EGR

I can't comment on the effect the EGR/coolant aspect but the above quote is certainly true for me. I've driven the same car for the last 6 years. I always fill the tank and run it til the fuel light comes on before refilling and resetting the trip meter. In winter I notice the tank range drops by up to 80 miles or so compared to what I'd get in warmer weather. The colder it gets the lower the mpg.

    A Few small annoyances :-

As above, I wouldn't let Halfords change the wiper blades on my 20 year old Passat tdi let alone service the BMW I'll be buying soon.
  19. Seasons greetings Having recently embarked on the search for a 530d I've found these two possible choices on Autotrader, one here and the other here. The first car is the older of the two, slightly lower mileage, slightly more affordable and comes with comfort seats and Variable Damper Control. The second car also appears to have VDC as well as sports seats but has also been remapped to give 315bhp and 495Nm. The remap makes me think twice, not because I'm necessarily opposed to such modifications but not knowing the owner who had the work done or how they liked to drive the car I wouldn't know how much abuse they might've given it, potentially storing issues for future owners. If they just appreciated the feel of the improved driveability and being able to make the most of overtaking opportunities then no worries. If they habitually liked to burn people off at the lights at every chance then I'd be more concerned. The second car is also in Northern Ireland so would involve a bit more expense/inconvenience in viewing and getting it over the water if I bought it. The seller states the car was MOTd on Nov 27th but a check on the MOT history checker reveals the cars MOT is showing as expired over a month ago...? Do DVLA not update their records more often than that? I need to get hold of the VINs for both cars and check the specs to confirm details. I'm sure the first car will have sufficient power and drive very well without a remap so I won't miss that. I'd really like to have VDC though. I know the standard suspension will be quite satisfactory for general driving but if I end up with a non VDC equipped car having read the difference VDC makes to the car I would always be wondering just how much better another car might handle. Seemingly VDC is a rare thing to find so part of me wants to jump on this car while it's there. But it's never good to just buy the first car you see so I'm in two minds what to do here. Just how often do VDC equipped cars come up for sale? After doing a bit of reading on the forum I know there are issues which can crop up with these cars. I need to find out how long the rear airbags have been on the car, whether there are any issues with the air compressor, whether the gearbox oil has been changed, whether the air con compressor been replaced, what state the DPF is in. Also aware of issues re water ingress and electrical gremlins. Is there anything else I need to be aware of? Given the travelling involved to get to view these cars I think the first thing to do would be to ask the vendors for the VINs and a copy of the service record and go from there. Meanwhile I'd appreciate any pointers or opinions on these cars from those here who know these cars better than me. Never had a BMW up to now but having heard great things about 530Ds I'm looking forward to finding the right car. Just might need to be a bit patient I guess.

    Potential 530D F11 purchases - Opinions welcome

At the moment I'm sure yes but I really need to try driving one with standard dampers to get an idea of just how much of an improvement, or otherwise the variable ones are. Replacements would indeed be expensive hence my considering a warranted AUC. Come the new year I'm going to get out for some of test drives then I'll know for sure which way to go re dampers. In some ways a tidy high mileage car with decent spec and receipts for lots of work and parts seems worth considering. Will be interesting to see what the dealer comes up with though. If I understand correctly the extended warranty on a used car would cover items such as dampers up to 100,000 miles.

To update on this, I spoke to the dealer selling the first car. I wanted to know if there was anything in the service history showing any of the usual items which fail had been replaced. Apart from the necessary servicing being done at more or less the right intervals there was no record of any other work being done. Given the mileage on the car already I'd have to assume the rear suspension airbags, air compressor(?), air con compressor, coolant thermostats, various suspension joints/bushes will need some attention over the next 40000 miles or so. Perhaps I'm being too pessimistic, the car is very attractive to me in some ways having variable dampers and comfort seats and while I could probably live without xenons if I had to but the possibility of having to sort out the above issues is putting me off. As far as the second car goes, while it has xenons it lacks variable dampers and comfort/sports seats so I'm going to leave that for someone else to enjoy. I was considering going to see Matthews old car but that has now disappeared from BMWAUC so I'm guessing someone else will be enjoying that car soon. The only cars left on there for now are MSports and I don't want an MSport so the search continues. Today I paid a visit to a BMW dealer not far from home and let them know I'm interested in a 530D. They know what I'm looking for and roughly what my budget is. Not sure I really want to go down the main dealer route, if I could find a car with reasonable mileage and the right options on a private sale which had had a few of the usual items replaced I'd feel ok about taking a chance on that. Then again the extended warranty I'd get from a main dealer on a newer AUC is quite attractive and probably worth the extra expenditure so we'll see what they come up with. I can feel the right car is coming. Just need to be a bit more patient.

    Newly aspiring 530d owner

Hi everyone, I've found myself perusing the forum for the last few days having realised I need a BMW 530d in my life. I've previously had a few nice cars, going back to the late 80s and on through the nineties I've had the pleasure (for the most part but also some unwanted expense) of owning, in no particular order an Opel Manta, Peugeot 205 1.9GTI, Lancia Beta 2.0l HPE IE, Rover SD1 3500 V8 S and Jaguar XJ6 4.2. After all those I moved on to two wheels for pleasure while keeping cheap diesel powered workhorses for four wheeled duties. I've been driving around in a 1999 Passat Tdi estate for the last 6 years. The car has recently passed the 1/4 of a million mile mark and while still a good car is starting to feel a little tired. This coupled with a better paying job and a house move necessitating a longer commute has led me to search for a nicer car to enjoy driving. After considering Audi A6 Avant and Mercedes C250 possibilities along with the 350d and doing some reading up on each of these cars I think the 350d will suit my needs and driving most so the search is now on for the right vehicle. I'm glad to have found my way here where it seems there is much good information and advice available. I'm looking forward to this new chapter of vehicle ownership very much and can't wait to post up some photos when I find the right car. Meanwhile, happy driving and Merry Christmas to all. CP

I can see it's definitely worth looking at. I'd be able to stop off at Leicester on the way to view the first car. It wouldn't be too far out of my way and It'd be interesting to have a back to back comparison of cars with and without VDC. I'll be sure to arrange to see both cars if I make the journey.
