    Sounds like warped brake discs to me. Should be easy to check by taking off a wheel and clamping a metal rod or something (assuming you don't have a dial test indicator) to the suspension so that it just touches the side of the disc and then rotate the wheel.

    Good man Munzy. Sorry I missed your question on the other thread, but glad you sorted it out ok. Interesting to see that yours failed at around the same mileage as mine; I reckon that oil and soot contamination is partially responsible - damned EGRs again! Out of interest, did you note which way round the 'C' profile rubber seal was fitted in the groove in the intake pipe? I foolishly took mine out to check it's condition and was then unsure which way to put it back. My experience in hydraulics taught me that the open side of a cup seal always points to the pressure side, but of course this should be reversed in a vacuum situation, so I faced the closed side towards the vacuum.

    For a few weeks now, I've noticed a noise that happens for about 3 seconds after switching the engine off. I had assumed it meant time for another new suspension bag, because it sounded like the air compressor was kicking in, although the car hasn't been dropping at all lately. Yesterday I thought to verify this by removing the fuse for the compressor and to my surprise discovered that the noise still happened each time the engine was switched off. Then I realised that it seemed to be coming from the front of the car and after opening the bonnet and getting my daughter to switch the engine off, it became clear it was coming from the inlet manifold area. It sounds a bit like a solenoid switching on and of about 10 times per second, but more of a metallic clattering and quite alarmingly loud. Googling and searching on here hasn't brought up many suggestions, other than it could be related the throttle or swirl flaps, since they are active in the shut down process. So I have just tried pulling off the electrical connector on the throttle body and lo and behold the noise has gone! Presumably, either the throttle valve itself has partially seized, or the gears are worn to the point of slipping. I'm relieved to know it's not swirl flap related, but surprised at the scarcity of reports on the web of similar occurrences. Has anyone here had the same issue, or even had cause to dismantle their throttle body? It's raining outside atm, so I haven't started to strip it down yet and don't know whether it will be an easy fix or best to buy a replacement.

    Spot on Deano, which explains the aftermarket Chinese brass parts on eBay. Anyway, just an update to say that the used part from Germany has been working fine for a few weeks now, so maybe this is a rare failure on a BMW.

    I couldn't bring myself to buy new and managed to find a used unit for under £50 on German Ebay, which should be here this week. I'll take it apart before fitting it and if there is significant wear, then it should work as a stop gap until the £15 repair parts arrive from from China.

    F11 Wheel Offset

    One of the important things to consider when fitting wider wheels is whether the outside edge of the tyres will foul the wheel arches. The fronts are probably the ones to worry about most on a BMW (if the original spec allows for a staggered set up). You also need to be sure that the inside edges will clear the suspension components. An 8.5j rim is 12.5mm wider than an 8j rim, so if you keep the same offset, then the outside edge of the wider rim will sit 12.5mm further out towards the wheel arch. I would imagine an extra 5mm of offset would work better for the steering geometry, maintaining the centre of the tyre in almost the same position. This would result in the outer rim sitting just 7.5mm further out and the inner rim 5mm further in than the original set up.

    I know, but that's exactly my point. Look at the picture and count the number of teeth on the gears, then decide if it is actually the same part. That part will probably work as a replacement for hundreds of different model numbers. It's all about economy of scale for the producers and car companies. Why would you design a new part specially for 1 model of car, when there are already millions of products already available that would work?

    It's almost funny when you realise that almost all of these parts are made cheaply in China, but some of us unwittingly end up paying many times the price for the same components, because they are supposedly produced by a bona fide company in Europe! I never ever subscribed to the old addage 'you get what you pay for'. OEM BMW parts are more like 'fools gold'!

    Thank you Marko, I did see that kit and believe it would work.     Thanks for all the information! That part number is exactly correct and the cheapest aftermarket part I can find is about £200 - it's probably what one would expect, but poor value for a diy fixer like myself. I've already found a brass gearwheel in china with the same number of teeth and am very tempted to give it a try for £15, but it would take a few weeks to get here and no guarantee it will work. I would buy a used part if it was fit for purpose, but if mine failed after 120k miles, that seems like a bad idea. I'm surprised to see so few reports of similar failures. There must be plenty of higher mileage cars than mine around, so why haven't more people had the same problem?

    Yes, the two worn gears are obviously the problem and in particular, the wear on the small driving gear. It looks like the throttle hasn't been closing properly for some time, so I think it's time to find a replacement ASAP. If I had a 3D printer, I would try to reproduce the white gearwheel instead of having to fork out £100s. You would have thought that if the gear on the motor is made of brass (and showing no signs of wear), the others should be too. Old school BMWs wouldn't have used soft plastic like that and it's a shame to see such built in obsolescence on these modern cars. It's only done 123k miles Percha. The shutdown doesn't seem affected, other than the racket it makes, but my concern is the inability to restrict airflow, which helps increase combustion temperature to assist DPF regens. The crescent gear does show more wear at a partially open position, so there must be a reason for this. Anyway, it's back together and running again now, so wasn't too tricky to get to. Matthew, do you know if a replacement will need coding or not? I'm hoping that the foot pedal trick will set the position sensor and that is all that's needed, but don't want to have a non runner if I replace it myself on the drive!

    Thanks dj - my cheapo 'Autel' diagnostic tool doesn't detect anything and yes, I'm also aware that restricting the air supply is an important factor in raising the temperature to facilitate DPF regenerations.

    Thanks Marco. Yes, sure there are some normal noises, but this is new and loud (you would easily hear it from the other side of the road). It sounds a bit like a hammer drill!

    Still raining, so I haven't tried dismantling yet. After doing some reading, I now wonder if this might actually be an electrical problem, rather than mechanical. It seems there is a sensor in the unit which detects the position of the throttle plate. The car doesn't misbehave at all when driving or idling - just this sound (like gears slipping) for 3 or 4 seconds after switching off. Perhaps the problem is related to a faulty or missing signal from the position sensor? Having found some instructions on the web for doing a throttle reset, I tried pressing the accelerator down for 30 secs with ignition on and then pressing ignition again, but no joy. The engine stops normally with no shuddering, which makes me think the throttle must be closing properly, so could it be that the components are all working fine, but the motor tries to keep running after closing the throttle because it doesn't get the signal to stop? I am guessing there must be an override which stops it after a few seconds to protect the motor etc. I bet Matthew will have an idea about this.

    530d F11 ReMap

    I had my first ever remap done a few months ago after discovering a guy who was advertising on Facebook Marketplace. I was skeptical at first, but became reassured after seeing how many BMWs he had done. He turned out to be a real gem of a bloke with fantastic knowledge of BMWs. No rolling roads or anything - I just went to his house and he did it by hooking the car up with jump leads and reading the files from the ECU with his Alientech tool. I don't know if this is what's referred to as a 'custom' remap, but apparently the files vary for each type of car. After that, he sent a request for the replacement files and when they arrived back, he wrote them back to the ECU. Only a couple of hours work. He said 'take it for a drive and see what you think', so I went down the road and immediately noticed the improved throttle response and torque. My 530d now performs virtually on par with a 535d and I'm seeing an improvement of about 2mpg! The map was written by Quantum Tuning, who are well established and there are loads of people round the country who use their software. It cost me £210.

    Should have said this is at 122k miles. I've had the car for the last 30k miles and the usage it gets is around 75% A and B roads, 15% town driving and 10% motorways. It hardly ever does journeys that don't give it time to fully warm up. A typical run would be driving 10 miles to Oxford then say 5 miles around town and 10 miles back home. I have never been aware of any DPF regen issues. I drive like a granny most of the time, trying to maximise fuel economy, but still don't seem able to average much more than 34mpg. I also enjoy a spirited 'Italian tune up' on a regular basis!

    F11 N57 Intake Manifold Cleaning

    Put it back on today without any major dramas. I didn't clip the hidden electric connector back onto the underside of manifold, to make for an easier job next time. Another thing I did that may be a useful tip for someone was to swap the corroded bolts from the EGR pipe at the flange connection with the identical but pristine ones that secure it to the cylinder head. It should mean they are easier to undo next time. The ports themselves had hardly any buildup, with minimal carbon deposits visible on the valve stems, so I just cleaned the mating face with some fine emery paper and gave them a good hoover to be sure nothing was left in there. The car started first turn, but was missing on one cylinder for what seemed like ages. Eventually it started ticking over normally, so I hope it'll be okay starting next time from cold. While they were so easily accessible with the manifold off, I pulled the caps off all the glow plugs to do a resistance check:- they all measured between .9 and 1.1 Ohms, which I think is a good sign, but perhaps I hadn't pushed one of the caps back on properly.     F11 N57 Intake Manifold Cleaning

    Thanks for all the info Matthew. I did try to tackle this job last year, but got stuck when I couldn't undo the etorx bolts connecting the metal pipe to the EGR unit. Having bought the correct sockets (instead of hex heads), today I eventually managed to undo those bolts, although I did have to remove the radiator fan housing on my F07 to allow access. After that, the wiring harness was a bit of a hassle to get around and then that bloody hidden clip holding the connector under the back of the manifold. However, I eventually got there and the manifold is now soaking in a mixture of TFR and water. Actually, I'm a bit disappointed that it's not more gunged up - the rearmost swirl flap was the worst, but certainly not as fouled as those on my previous M57 engine. Perhaps this was helped by my recent stage 1 remap?

    I don't think your car has TPMS valves. I believe these (expensive) valves were first used on LCI models. Certainly my '10 reg car doesn't have them, although there is a tyre pressure warning system that detects wheel rotation differences via the ABS sensors and flags up a warning due to the reduced rolling circumference of a punctured tyre.

    Yes, these are the basic OE spec wheels for the F07 that people tend to replace. For sure they give a more comfortable ride than 19" or 20" rims, but the used ones I've seen seem to have suffered horribly from corrosion. I've been pondering over a set of these as a cheap option, but IMO they do look slightly crap!

    My 316 style 20" alloys look great but the ride is horrible and the stiff walled Goodyear runflats compound the problem of too little give from the minimal depth of tyre height. The difference in ride quality is huge, when compared with 18" wheels with winter runflats. Also, my 18" wheels are still in great condition, because you can nudge kerbs without grazing them and they stay round when you hit potholes. Best scenario for comfort is 18" rims with 245/50 non runflat tyres. My winter wheels will be back on soon and I don't relish the prospect of going back to 20" in the spring, so would happily sell/trade the 316s if anyone wants a hard ride. They would need a refurb if you are fussy and there is one small crack on each of the rears!
