What do you all get on full tank?

Using this approach my theoretical range from the last 2-3 tanks is approx 550 miles from my N53 based on a recent average of 35.7 mpg. (Mix of mostly long motorway trips with occasional local journeys)

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Well it’s the end of week one in Bella Italia and until today the F10 hadn’t turned a wheel. To make up for that I took my dad for the equivalent of a b-road blast cross country 40km to Orvieto to have a walk alongside the old aqueduct. A lovely drive on smooth twisty roads windows down, traction mode and manually shifting to let the straight six sing and some quality father son time (going out for a spin in his grand voyager isn’t quite the same...) I need to try and find a smaller spare car seat for my daughter (currently in a Recaro Monza in mine and Recaro young sport hero in my wife’s car) to get two generously sized adults in the back with her so we can use my car more next year when we’re out here.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Well this is a few days late but made it down to my parents in Italy in one piece, a rock solid indicated 38mpg all the way down until I hit the last hundred miles and got bored... (my previous 1100 mile average dropped by 2mpg over the last hundred) Ironically I actually had fewer fuel stops than in the E60 520D last year. Now we’re here the car won’t get used that much as we tend to all bundle into my dad’s Chrysler grand voyager if we’re all heading out. (And petrol is flipping expensive here compared with diesel) We usually have a couple of walking trips out just me and him which is a good excuse to get the BMW out on the lovely twisty Italian roads.

Well I’m certainly doing my bit for saving the planet tonight as I came home in a MINI cooper. My F10 wasn’t ready - or to quote directly “it isn’t intact yet”. I’m off on a couple of hundred miles round trip for work tomorrow so not ideal conditions for a three cylinder hatch but it does at least have a bit more go than the MINI one my colleague always seems to get when her Cooper S is in. It is however a cream colour, the last time I sat in a cream car was my dad’s Sierra hatch in the early 90s. Even at the age of 3 or 4 I knew the colour was wrong! (and mum had a sapphire in a weird gold colour - what were they thinking?)

They’re in Umbria, they bought the house around 10 years ago and moved out in 2011. It’s such a lovely part of the world and so relaxing, we tend to go down for three weeks to get a proper chance to switch off.

Well miraculously this evening I actually changed a dipped bulb without major incident. I did start in a strop as I’d lost said bulb but after putting my tools etc back in the shed it miraculously showed up on the car stuff shelf in the hallway (where my wife said it would be). Booked in for oil change, filters and spark plugs, vehicle check and MOT (and investigation of dodgy door lock) tomorrow morning to get ready for the annual pilgramage to my parents in Italy at the end of next week.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

I drove mine to Millbrook proving ground and parked it up for the day. I’d got a place on a driving experience Hyundai were running to show off the new i30n and what a great day out. Was very impressed with the car for a first proper stab at a hot hatch and got to drive it on the high speed bowl, alpine loop and a run down the mile straight. (My wife’s recovering from a broken leg so we also got a couple of instructor driven laps of the alpine loop which showed me up good and proper!) The day finished with a pro driver hot lap round the outer handling circuit which was a bit intense! All marketing bumpf but a great day out for free. It was also nice to hop back in the F10 for a quick cross country blast home.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

I hate changing dipped beam bulbs on my car. Firstly it’s a reminder that I don’t have xenons and secondly I do something stupid every single time to make an easy job hard. Last time I replaced the old bulb with... ...you guessed it, the old bulb. This evening while struggling to fit my chubby hands into the world’s smallest gap to undo perhaps the tightest fitting bulb holder I managed to drop my phone (had been using as a torch) down under the headlight into the bumper necessitating a quick tool change to take the arch liner off. God only knows how I used to do half the stuff I did to my old mg midget at university - is it possible to entirely lose mechanical ability?

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

I’ve just been doing lots of business miles recently so no time for anything interesting (1000 miles this week). However, I’ve tried slowing down for work trips to see the impact on economy on a run down from Cambridge to Plymouth I averaged 44.3mpg on the way down which levelled off to 40.5 by the end of the return trip with a few short trips across town in between. I didn’t quite manage the same up to Manchester but got circa 40 on the way up and overall average for return of around 35 (I was fed up of motorways so cut back over the peaks to drop a colleague off in Chesterfield). Not sure how long I’ll be able to keep this up but it has been interesting to see how efficient the N53 can be when you take it steady (also nice not having to fill up quite so regularly).

    Remanufactured Turbo Vs New (F10/F11)

I had a turbo failure on my E60 520D at around 120k, it had a full BMW service history but no idea how it had been treated. It was under an aftermarket warranty but think the bill was around £1800 at local dealer and I have a feeling that may have been a refurbished turbo fitted but ran perfectly fine after that until I traded it in.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

I panicked when I saw snow on my road (just a couple of inches) as before I’d replaced my rear tyres it just wouldn’t move in any snow at all. I was really lucky on my slog from just outside Cambridge to Rugby and on to Manchester, no serious snow but took it slow due to slush in outside lane and used far less fuel than usual on the M6. I did however use a complete tank of screen wash on the way up so had to swing by Williams BMW who have a slightly more old school parts desk than the glass and steel palaces I’m used to down south.

    3.0 petrol oil consumption

Another 5k down and needed another litre this week - looks like it is pretty consistent on mine at least!

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

I didn’t get to the bottom of this in the end as the service advisor seemed to have very little grip on the basics beyond reading off the screen in front of him. I’d been kept waiting for quite a while and was running late to pick up Mrs B for a weekend away so decided to leave it. Car definitely running better than before but will test over the weekend running round Norfolk.

I’ll definitely ask when I get to the garage, does the index indicate age/revision?
