    Drivechain - Drive Moderately

Sadly there are some. When you can get a new 5 er for a few hundred quid a month on the never never, a big service is more than a months payment, folk moan about the costs.

You are getting there so that's a start. Most BMW workshops/showrooms are franchises. They are an independent company that just so happens to service/sell BMWs. My local dealer is fine. The reception staff are sound and they will let you speak to the workshop Forman and even the tech if you ask nicely. The dealers get a hard time because they are perceived to be expensive. You don't buy a BMW then try and service/maintain it on a shoe string budget. Yes there are horror stories (some on here) but you never hear about the ones that go normally.

The E39 First World Problems thread

Sure sign of a front ABS wheel sensor on its way out. Autobox uses inputs from these to detect the cars speed for gear shifts.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Totally agree. Wet braking performance is what I choose my tyres on.

I would ring them now to tell them its happened and you want to know when you can bring it in.
  7. I need a favour from other F10 owners who have a standard sized rear number plate that is screwed on. Can you measure your number plate and tell me where the screws are in relation to the horizontal centre line of the number plate please? Are the screws on the centre line or above/below the centre line? Thanks.

    auto gearbox repair guidance

You would need two men just to lift the box in and out of the car wouldn't you? Specialist or scrap, either way it starts with an 's'!

F10 rear number plate screw position

No, I'm guessing the average F10 owner doesn't own a tape measure or know how to work one! Thanks.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Are those Michelin cross climates @AndyM? If so how do you find them? I like your shades. Thanks for the info.

The fault warning on the car is used to describe any fault with a component of the drive train. This can be any fault in the engine or gearbox that makes the car warm you of this message. It could be anything from a faulty injector to a fault in the transmission. One such fault (of many) that gives this warning is a problem with the EGR. What did the dealer do when it was in for the recall? Did the replace or say it's o.k.? As it is an N47 then there is a chance that the drive train fault is a fault to do with the timing chain. But then again it could be to do with any component in the engine or transmission. That's why you need to get the codes read.

    Automatic shifting

If it does this when cold it's the lower gears being held for longer to warm up the engine faster. Shouldn't do that when warm though.

    Leather cleaning

I've used mild non scented bars of hand soap to clean leather before. Gently done with a damp cloth and it was fine.

    Centre Caps for staggered 19s

The caps are all the same on the F10/11 so if they fit Andy's they will fit your 19" wheels. I think the difference in size reduction of 3mm will be due to the floating mechanism making the roundell smaller.

I would take it back. It's too much of a coincidence but I would put money on your dealer denying that. Is it the dealer on Sir Frank Whittle Road?

    BMW 520D M SPORT AUTO F10 MODEL 2011

Does the car move when shifting out of P and into D when your foot is on the brake? Are you using Autohold or are you just holding it on the foot brakes when you are at the lights?

Test drove my first e60 yesterday My opinions.

It's not unheard of for all types of petrol BMW engine to possibly suffer from valve stem oil stem failures once they get long in the mileage dept. Regular oil changed and running decent fuel all helps. it's just one of the many known weak points on the N62.

Test drove my first e60 yesterday My opinions.

Because like sheep, everyone believed the Government and went out and bought a Diesel during the E60 years which is why petrols are rare and now expensive as they are ULEZ free (why would you drive a Prius when you can smoke* around for free in a 545i?) Yes that was an optional extra from new. For ultimate reliability you want a manual 530i E60 LCi. Good luck with the search. *literally as the valve stem oil seals will need doing.

    BMW E60 525D Automatic - Oil change

Transmission service is best done by a ZF agent, costs as above. ZF make the transmission so anyone who knows how to service ZF autoboxes can change the filter (integral with sump) and use the correct specification of transmission fluid which is vital. What is the remaining service interval on your idrive for the oil service? That will confirm if the previous owner is being truthful.

    BMW E60 525D Automatic - Oil change

Engine oil change is roughly £100 inc parts Auto transmission service is about £300-£400 inc parts Which are you wanting to service?

    Central Heating Boiler question !

There shouldn't be any issues draining down the system to work on it. I drained down mine at the weekend to remove a radiator. Refilled and is running fine. You just need to make sure you are methodical in bleeding out the air. And unlike me, make sure you put some inhibitor in it. I'll need to drain down again to refit said radiator so I'll put some cleaner in the system meantime.

Strong petrol smell on cold starts.

I wouldn't say you should be able to smell petrol. Check the fuel lines, could be something is slightly weeping when it's parked up for long times (cold start) but not when it's warm. CCV failing/leaking might let you smell oil/exhaust fumes, but I don't think petrol fumes. Have you noticed a drop in mpg?
