    Advice on seized nipples

Brake bleed nipples, not any other kind of nipple......just to make that clear from the off. Mate has a 8 year old Golf that has corroded/seized front brake caliper nipples, any suggestions apart from heating the caliper to expand it around the nipple and using a good quality deep socket over it? Concern over heating the caliper is the brake fluid boils and you then need to get it off the car regardless as the fluid is now steam. I've only ever bled brakes on cars that have had the fluid changed every two years so they've always come undone o.k. So I'm a bit stuck in helping him. Any advice is gratefully received. Some nipple therapy including a video here if we make a Jeremy Hunt of it. http://www.fraserbrowneng.co.uk/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=53

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

BMW have changed their tune wrt fuel additives, they were very much a no no. Not now though, as you can see they flog their own stuff! But there is clearly a market in selling snake oil and they must want a share of that market. Hence the U turn that would make a politician proud.

    Advice on seized nipples

Genuine BMW nipples must also be gold plated as they are a similar price too! I was going to replace the ones in the F10 when I bled the brakes last month but I didn’t bother when it would have cost £10 each and as it was mine are in ok condition. I replaced them on my last E60 (with genuine ones) but I can’t recall how much they were, £8 each mibbies.

    Prospective F11 buyer - should I?

Both my E60 and F10 were/are on rfts. F10 is much better in the twisty bits.

Good for you, mine is now on a yearly oil change cycle. Plenty of DIY posts on here for various jobs on these cars including one as a perspective F11 owner you will most certainly need.

    Electric swivelling towbar problem

We cut the bumper on my dads MSport to fit the Westfalia detachable but it was underneath and totally invisible from the rear, only when you go underneath can you see it. We had to trim it to allow sufficient clearance for the socket to swivel down. Ironically, more of my swivelling towbar is visible below the bumper skirt on my MSport than is visible with a detachable Westfalia. You can see the silver swivel neck just below the bumper skirt on mine just to the left of the right hand middle rear parking sensor. It's more obtrusive than the Westfalia detachable one. Just be careful buying used swivelling towbars. Was the car it came from in a shunt? When mine got replaced after a rear end shunt, it took another 3 replacements before we got one that worked properly. All brand new Westfalia's out a BMW box. Had the BMW dealer tearing their hair out trying to sort it. In my case the original towbar had a minor bend to a bumper support bracket, the workshop and insurance company refused to take a chance as it had taken a knock so replaced it without quibble. They said to me its a safety critical component so no way can we risk you towing and it parting company from the car. The towbar certainly helped limit damage to my car, made a right mess of the guy that hit me though.

Got to be worth a try. Still miss my E39, even for a pre facelift SE with orange indicators and teeny weeny bogo standard 15" alloys it was a good looking car IMO.

Gearbox low speed jolt 1 to 2

I remembered you getting it done but I couldn’t remember the price! Ooofttt First service on my E60 was £258 in 2009 second was £400 inc £40 worth of sleeve, in 2016 so it’s a big jump up to the 8HP service price. And at the same specialist as @Cadwell Parker!

You mean you don’t have any? Poor excuse that! First thing you do with a new car, take lots of photos then post them up on here!

You could at least post up a gratuitous under bonnet shot @JCM I saw a 535i Sport in that same colour that belonged to a rep of a tool company that was supplying a site I was working on back in 2001. From then on I always wanted a V8 E39 Sport. I’m sure it was a Sport 535i but that was a long time ago now.....and I’ll now be corrected by you lot!

N57 timing chain is no more prone to issues really than any other BMW 6 cylinder engine. Yes it can still rattle but you would be really really unlucky if it did. I wouldn’t worry about it tbh IMO. It’s all versions of the N47 (4pot) that can rattle if the guides have gone and it’s not seen regular oil and filter changes. Regular being 10,000 miles or yearly, half the recommended intervals.

    Advice on seized nipples

Well using And Worked like a charm. Tonight I got the last nipple cracked after my mate had been regularly soaking it all day yesterday and today. The 11mm hex head had wasted down a bit but not enough to get a 10mm socket on so just going canny with 1/4” ratchet to limit the torque I got it to move. More WD40 and it came out no problem. I cleaned the threads up on my pillar drill with a wire brush, bled the brakes using a Gunzon Eezibleed. VW will take a week to get new replacement nipples to him. £10 each! Thank you both.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

^I thought it was. Silence was deafening when it was finally switched off after 6 minutes of Rudolfs(1858 - 1913) symphony in D major.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Space grey with oyster. When he said it came from Scotland, I wondered if it was my dads old F10 but no, it’s an LCI and has aluminium trim not the dark wood. Good colour and trim combo. They are fine looking machines.

    Electric swivelling towbar problem

Should be ok as the smart opening works from detecting a kicking motion and I think the detection unit is mounted away from where the towbar swivels from. If you are looking to retro fit a towbar, save yourself money and hassle by fitting a detachable Westfalia towbar and electrics.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

^It was more the fact that it’s frowned upon idling a car while stationary. Noisy git.

    Prospective F11 buyer - should I?

I find the F10 is a good but more nimble than the E60 was. I put that down to the lighter engine (ok so not an issue on every comparison) but the double wishbones and 19” wheels give it pin sharp handling compared to my last E60 and I’d rebuilt it’s front suspension, If you owned an E39, the F10/11 harks back to that interior where you feel cosier than in an E60/1. But yes getting my F10 in my garage to work on it was a challenge compared to the E60. You won’t regret getting an F11. Good big solid barge, well apart from the soggy rear air springs.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Currently being a ‘Dad taxi’ parked up in my F10 waiting for the littl’un and having a cup of tea. Nice and quiet and relaxing, well apart from the diesel 4 pot clatter from the car two up......

Wheel swop - TPMS valves won't come out

I bet you they didn’t try. No not wheel specific, just reset the system and drive off just as you would after adjusting pressures.

Wheel swop - TPMS valves won't come out

Away it’s just the rubber seal sticking to the rim. But of lube and screw on the tool they use to pull traditional valves thru the rim then use that to give it a wiggle while pushing on it.
