BANG! Front suspension may have let go?!?!?

I heard an almighty bang in the F10, nearside rear coil had snapped when I was driving over the drop kerbs coming out my driveway. Knocks can be suspension balljoints, heard most likely on full lock or when coming off the power as the suspension loads up differently. Jack it up and it will be obvious if its the spring. How to get the strut out.

Rear brake pad warning light wont reset.

I have to confess when I changed my rear pads and discs, I didn't reset the system as it was still showing 39k to go so I just put the new sensor in and left it. But yes, it did take several attempts to reset the front pad warning light. I don't know if that was linked to a non genuine part or the fact that I was using the trip buttons rather than using diagnostics.

    Budget dual action polisher

You could probably pick up a Megs G220. I got one for my 30th birthday, some years ago now. Good bit of kit, variable speeds. Just a case of getting the right pads and polish combo. BMW paint is hard so its quite an easy car to start with in terms of that you won't do any damage to any paintwork. Just means the swirls etc are harder to polish out.

^This. Defo need a new sensor once its pinged. Check the connections in the offside rear wheel arch for the sensor wiring. Perhaps when you jacked it the sensor cable moved as the suspension dropped and its triggered the wear warning.

Yes if you can, get their insurance company to deal with it all. I missed that boat, they called me to sort it out after I had set the ball rolling thru my insurance company. Its in their interest to sort themselves as its far far cheaper.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Well in your defence, why would instructions for the front fuse box be in the rear fuse box. To save 2p on another scrap of paper, we have one combined fuse chart.

Its folded up in the rear fuse box at the bottom, just above the main red cable in the pic below.

F54 (Ha!) and F31 I think are ignition on fuses. Check out the many dash cam install threads for chat about how to get to these fuses. The actual fuse chart is more helpful for finding them than using TIS. If I was in there installing other circuits I would take the panel out the rear of the glove box, remove the panel beneath the glove box (as if you were accessing the pollen filters) and remove the side panel but don't disconnect the airbag switch wiring. The side panel just pops out and gives a bit more light on to the area in question.

I think the last time I ever had to replace a fuse on a car was the 15 amp fuse I had retro fitted to my trailer socket bypass relay on my E60 when I hired a trailer with faulty lights. I generally don't have anything in the cubby holes to have shorted out the fuse though so can't think why it would have failed. Unless there is something more sinister going on.

What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Discovered that my front two cigarette lighter sockets in the cup holder and armrest do not work anymore. Right, floor mat out to kneel on, empty glove box, pull out panel and decide I'm never going to contort my arm thru that hole while wearing my suit in the few minutes I've got before my train. Didn't check the one in the panel under the glove box which I'll remove to get to F54. Job for tomorrow. Oh wait because its the weekend the weather man says its going to be wet and windy, again. Marvellous.

+1 on that. DO NOT DO THIS! I stupidly let Admiral pass me on to a third party claims handling company. It was a world of pain because I had the audacity to specify/demand that my car went to an approved BMW workshop and not the claims handling companies preferred supplier. This cause no end of delay in getting it sorted as I got passed back and forth between the claims handling company and Admiral as neither of them wanted to deal with my bodyshop. Ended o.k., despite the no fault claim it did not affect my premium, in fact its dropped both years since.

My original front Michelin Primacy tyres were like that and I could tell the handling was a bit squirmy on poor roads. I saw they were like that when I bought it so as part of the deal I got BMW to do a full 4 wheels alignment and to leave the before and after print outs in the car. All was well with the alignment and the tyre wear 20k later is very even. If it is pushed hard into the bends (which we know you do ) the outer edges of the front take the brunt of it. Sounds like you need four new tyres. That be four decent new tyres.

^how much was that? Genuine painted E60 one was north of £100 from BMW when I needed one. I got an OEM one from ebay for £20 and painted it with a touch up pen. Couldn't tell the difference.

Awww naw, hope everyone is o.k. If their insurance admits fault you should get a "like for like" replacement and not a sh!tty 1.0i Corsa. Just hope they don't give you a souless Lexus IS300h like I got.

    Should I ditch RFT’s

Contis aren't as good as they once were. Goodyears are much better than the Contis on the wifes car. My winter contis are not as good as the Dunlops winters I had before.

    Brake pad warning sensor

Took my E39 in for a service. I was told you need new front pads and discs No thanks I'll wait a while, I knew they were wearing but not too bad. Bought a new set of pads and discs perhaps 8k after the service. Another 2k and it wants a service again. Takes it back to same dealer this time with the pads and discs in the boot, thinking that if they say its needs new pads and discs they cna fit whats in the boot. Go to collect it and I query why this time there is no mention of worn front discs and pads. I was told simply, you front brakes are fine. My response, so why did you tell me they were worn out 10k miles ago? I don't go to that dealer anymore. Since owning the CBS E6 and F10, I've never had any cr@p from a dealer telling me the brakes are worn. But with 1,100 miles to go on the F10 idrive, the disc and pads looked like this! Don't rely on the computer! My rear pads say 60k or 70k to go but the discs are near scrap. That means both pads and discs will need replacing.

+1 on that. I ran my last E60 on Dunlop SP Sport 01s rft. Ran at door jamb pressures and never had any issue. Previous winters on my F10 were 17" Dunlop 3D winters rft and gave far better grip and re-assurance than the Continental Winter contacts I now have. Decent motor warrants decent tyres.

    Horn

Had to dash off, sorry here is the repair details, bumper off apparently which looks a bit of a faff so you are dead right saying they are a hard place to get too. Horn

It’s probably got one trumpet not working. Common fault in the F30 too. I had a Dixie horn fitted to my Senator as an upgrade.

    Heavy rain, Water leak

Take the cover off, it’s four torx T30 screws and clean out the plenum in front of the yellow grommet. The nearside scuttle is a bit more involved.

    Should I ditch RFT’s

Ok. The ones fitted to the rear of my F10 when I bought it, cracked badly after less than 18 months old and they were split on the car with winters so hadn’t seen that much mileage or driven in harsher environments. Don’t get me wrong they had good enough grip in the bends and when powering away but the cracking had me worried so they got binned for Michelin Primacy.

    Should I ditch RFT’s

Who here has swapped rft for go flats on 18" size? My winter set up on 18" square will need replacing soon and I'm intrested to know how the car feels in the bends with the softer sidewall and more importantly taller sidewall than my 19" summers when changing from rfts to go flats. I can already feel the car isn't as planted on the 18" over the 19". The 17" previous winters were very noticeably more wobbly in the twisty bits.

Lol, I like what you did there. But probably best to recycle them into play park soft matting stuff than chuck them in a hole in the ground.
