What did you do to your E39 today ?

Well it’s open now, but W hat a fight that was! I’m so glad I did it myself though. God alone knows what it would have cost in a garage, no matter how friendly!!! It would seem that one of the cables has stretched. The one that goes from the link to the dvr side catch. I think I’d best replace all 3 though. If one is stretched, then they all will be! still, if I can secure the intermediate cable to deal with the stretch, that’ll do as a temp measure.

How I wish this beast had the bonnet cable as per the us models! That would be dead easy! As it is, access is very restricted on the dvr side. See the photos. #1 is the passenger (near side) #2 is the dvr side. Aargh!!!!!!

I’ve watched these, and others, but they don’t seem to help! I’ve clearly got a bastard of a car! Behind the rad grilles is cowling that channel air into the radiator etc, so have had to cut some of it away. I’ve even bought a pry bar set to give me leverage access. However, it would seem that the underside of the catch doesn’t allow access to the cable ends/operating levers so I can operate the lock externally. I’m beginning to dislike the beast!

F***ing Bonnet cable is caput!!! Any ideas about how the **** I can get the offside catch released before I resort to drastic measures which will require a new bonnet? Robert

Hi guys ‘n’ gals, Well life has a nasty way of kicking back at you, and it’s done so to me! Ive done my back in rather badly, so my project aka The Beast won’t be getting the love it deserves now. it’ll be going up for sale real soon, even with its faults now. tSo thought I’d give you guys first dibs, since you’re all aficionados of the marque. Its a 1998 540i touring with all the original docs from new. Double glazing, uprated ‘M’ sport suspension. M sport seats, uprated brakes, overhauled gearbox, new fe yep pump, new power steering pump. Summer & winter tyres in 2 sets of wheels, refurbished wiper arms too Bad bits: reversing lights don’t work. It’s a gearbox switch. CD player doesn’t auto change all the time. Remote locking has just died although both keys work manually. Very occasionally it won’t start in park. It’s not the gearbox controller though, it’s been checked, and the dash is pixelated as usual. Still, most if not all the 286 horses are still in the paddock, and the servicing is up to date as is the mot. Next March it’s due. I just physically can’t get under the car now! Any idea what I should ask for?

Damn. I wish the Beast did that! 13.7 MPG around town, and that’s with a light foot!

Hi my learned fellow owners. I have had the issue of stretched bonnet cables, and in the obvious fight to get the bugger open, I’ve knackered my kidney grilles. I seem to remember that someone on here advised about which one to get and those to avoid. The beast has been de-chromed from new, so an all black pair are necessary. This despite there being rather dodgy chrome edge ones there before. Please advise. Any and all info gratefully received. Robert

Look great too. Really must have a go at mine! Bonnet cable sorted though. Nothing broken, but I’ll order new cables anyway. Wiper arms removed & resprayed now too!

My 540i touring, (1998 aka the beast), is still going strong after 185k, and I’m looking forward to doing the suspension bushes next after it’s successful mot in March but! On checking the oil I noted that it could do with topping up, so off to get the right grade I approached the beast clutching a litre. Went to pop the lids, and………nothing!!!! Got the grills off (I’ll replace them in due course), and the offside popped too. Do you think I can get the screws side open? Not a chance. The stealers advised ‘perseverance, it’s what we’d have to do’. No help there then! Any of you learned people know of a ‘knack’ to pop the bugger open? R

The beast needed handbrake sorting, so with new pads & shoes in hand I set about replacing them. BLIMEY!!!! What on earth did the designers think they were doing??? The adjusters are inside the drum & not anywhere near what my manual says. The operation of the shoes is awful, and it bit me twice! Finally got it back together though & it’s still pretty poor! I will adjust the cable, but I don’t expect it to be very effective!

So, With my new facelift lights, I thought I'd better get some adapter cables to join the buggers up. Went to eBay to see what I could find, and ordered what were described as headlight adapter cables. What arrived were adapter cables for the angel eyes and the indicator, but no headlight cables. Complained to eBay, who called me straight back! and they are going back. Please can someone tell be where I can get a complete set of headlight adapter cables? Robert
