What did you do to your E39 today ?

I do understand. I’ve worked on everything from a V12 Challenger to an outboard. Rebuilt diesel injector pumps to complete engine build-ups. That was in a previous life though, when I was in the mob. Maybe I’ll think again and, as suggested, Use the cash elsewhere. Whatever I choose, it'll be an interesting journey this! Today is about boats though. A weekend sailing!

well they said ‘Stage 1’ would do it, and being an engineer I’d only believe it on a dynamometer. It’ll be an interesting exercise though. I understand that BMW did design an E39 M5 Touring, but never put it into production There’s a guy in the states that has done the mods though. i think he gets about 500 from the same engine with a supercharger, but I’m not certain. Mind you, the supercharger mod is about $5000, so that our to start with!

Haha. Fat chance!!! There were 286 horses in the stable when she was new, and I’m convinced most of them are still in the paddock! There’s a friendly tuner near me that will swap £250 for enough to put 325 in the stable again. No hint of red anywhere too!!

What did you do to your E39 today ?

Well! I am v aware that my flexible brake pipes are 22yrs old, so I thought I’d change them for armoured pipes & at the same time clean up all the rest of the gubbins behind the wheels. The next question being what colour should the callipers be etc. That decision has largely been resolved by the quote for the refurbishment of the wheels. Gloss black powder coated by a recommended place is £388 inc vat for all 4 in gloss black! A good price I feel, so the colours of the pipes & callipers my be red, or black, or M sport striped!!!
  7. I’m interested if they will fit my 1998 540i, depending on what can be achieved with them. Robert

Hi all, Well I’ve started! She’s sitting on 15mm spaced style 66’s now. I’ll have to get the steering geometry checked & the wheels balanced now! Service by trusted indie on 13 Oct, then a chat with recommended body specialists about sorting the paintwork, refining the wheels (I favour ‘Shadow Chrome’), new boots too. I’ve got the 16” turbines for winter already.

The gearbox was drained, flushed, had the filter changed and refilled with the right stuff. They said it really needed it & it had only done approx 180k. £165 well spent imo. The water pump is still going fine, but at 22yrs old and 180k, I’m thinking prevention is better than cure. It’s a job for its next service, as are the non working reversing lights (not a fuse) and the fact it won’t start in ‘park’.

What did you do to your E39 today ?

Haha. I can add up, and yes it sometimes comes to much more than I'd like!!! We are not married, and she knows about both but. She doesn't like it when I let the horses loose on the car, and being very much a 'home bird', she doesn't like the bed on the boat. Bring on the 'boys weekends!'

Mine has had the same issue underneath, discovered due to rusty pipes. All sorted below now. Had the g/box serviced. It drives much better now. Next jobs are, in no particular order: Sort out the fitting of the front bumper. Fit upgraded lights, (already got them). Replace the coolant pump/thermostat cos its the engine's Achilles heel. Change the flexy brake pipes, (they are 22yrs old), and smarten up the calipers. Refurbish the interior cos it's looking tired. Sort out the cd changer. The list goes on!! But as you say.....Long live E39's

I feel your pain and I’ve often mentioned getting rid, but what could you replace it with? When I put my right foot down & she responds....... I doubt I’ll change her for anything! Mind you, if I could ever afford an M1!!!!!
