    Piper's E39 540i Touring

    oh no !
  2. That's the oil I used to put in my 540i, changed stupidly often because it just comes out of the tap at work! However, 10w40 HX7 is really what you want in my opinion on these old barges

Yup, that is definitely an option ! Didn't like them very much at first, and I also thought they were e39 wheels, out of place on an older car. RealOem opened my eyes once again, they were an option on our cars !! They are definitely contenders, will see if a set pops up at a decent price, considering I need to get rid of the ACS (and I need to do it efficiently!) and also my Mongol Rally adventure is happening this year, my wallet will be dead by august.

Thank you Sharkfan, I was pretty sure that was the one. the hutn begins then ! I've done some reading, and apparently NOn airbag cars have a different spline on the steering shaft. The only way I'm going to find out is by removing the schnitzer wheel I suppose.. Staggered style 16s will be a challenge to find, I'm also keeping my eyes open for staggered style 19s, they're growing on me !

Thank you. I'm finding cheap Z3 wheels that look very much the same, would they fit ? Wheels: were 17" staggered style 16 a factory option on e34 540is?

Ok so that third one really is my steering wheel. Correct ?

Oh ok, I though the third one was the standard 540 airbag wheel ?

yoho, while my car is still snoring inside the lockup garage I've made a decision. I'll get rid of all the ACS stuff, keeping only the exhaust, reverting the rest of the car back to original. This means I'll put for sale the ACS Type 2 I currently have, and start to shop around for wheels. Now, being this a normal 540i I'd expect it to be delivered new with 16" Style 16, am I correct ? I saw cars with a 17" staggered version of these wheels, were they a factory option on the e34? Looking at my car's build spec, I saw it was equipped with sport suspension and lowered ride height. Would this mean a different style of wheel from standard ? My intention is to keep the car's appearance as original as I can, but I do like the look of 17" on an e34, my wheels are just not to my taste, they are eccelent and very good quality, but I like the oem look. So would 17" style 16 be a sensible choice? the other option would be style 5s, but were they an option too? if you know people that are getting rid of wheels like these feel free to let me know ! Second matter of business is the steering wheel. My car now has a leather 3 spoke ACS wheel, which is very nice and also very rare, but I'm more for an original look, so I've decided to put that up for sale too. On the build spec of my car it does specify this: S255A Sports Leather Steering Wheel if I type E34 sport steering wheel all I see are Mtech wheels, which I believe have no place on non M cars. Although I absolutely love the look of an Mtech1 wheel ! which one of these steering wheels would have been found on a car like mine ? this one ? I hope not this one... or this other one ? My heart says to go for an Mtech1, but I'm determined not to stick any M stuff on a car that's just not one of the breed, I'm sure you'll get it. So feel free to give your opinion, I'm a BMW ignorant !

    E34 520i Touring Daily Project

uh yeah, I did miss this thread. good work adam
  11. Just read all of this and my only disappointment is that it only lasted 3 pages ! Your attention to detail, not only in the way you perform your repairs and upgrades, but in the way you explain the process and organize your posts leaves me speechless. This was an utter pleasure to read, a true enjoyment for a fellow petrolhead and oldtimer enthusiast like me, and it also serves as source of much needed motivation to complete my project, still lightyears away from what I can see in these pages. You seem to know these cars inside out and yet again, the information you share are like precious gems in the world of online forums, where cheap cars meet cheap parts and also "cheap" owners, where everything is "that'll do", finding someone truly experienced and also dedicated to help others by listing part numbers and also prices, is something totally unheard of, so thank you. Looking forward to future updates, in the meantime I'm probably going to read all this again.

    Piper's E39 540i Touring

Just read through this. looks like trouble isn't just in e34s!! keep on trucking @Piper, I know what losing interest and motivation means, my suggestion is to move to something else while keeping the e39. Sooner or later you'll gain enough motivation to start again an da enjoy it. im doing plans to put mine back on the road after laying her up for close to two years now, I feel your pain!

The low emission zone hopefully won't be a problem. I'm looking to buy a house somewhere in surrey and definitely not interested in sharing the road space with the black cabs and ubers of central London. ive called many insurance providers, best quote was Lancaster in the high 700s, or admiral on a multi cover with my Clio. Still stupid money. before all this I need to sort the body out. Any body shops you'd recommend..?
