e39 M5 - secondary air flow error trigging engine light

Thinking about it, it probably is a blocked head or a restricted pipe. I am going to clean the pipes during the weekend if I can. I bought a 1.5m pipe cleaner so it should work. I want to see how blocked it is. I am also trying to flash the dme too. I am getting the sp daten files Anthe moment. Apparently eu cars shouldn't trigger an engine light so my theory is that my dme has the incorrect software. I won't flash anything until I find out what version I have installed.

e39 M5 - secondary air flow error trigging engine light

So a little update since I last posted this. I was getting code 170 secondary air flow on INPA and I decided to find out where the problem was occurring. I tested the air pump and that was working perfectly, I took out the secondary air flow value and tested it, it was dirty but working well when a vacuum was pulled. The electrics for the vacuum pump were working and a vacuum was being pulled. I decided to change the vacuum line that goes into the valve, the lines were still working but due to age had some minor damage. With air leaks its hard to tell. It was a nightmare to change the pipe, but somehow I managed it without removing the plenum. When the new pipe is attached I can blow through and there is a leak. I am not sure if this is meant to be that way. Doe anyone know where pat number 6 in the diagram ends and where is the final part that the vacuum plugs into? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=DE92-EUR-12-2000-E39-BMW-M5&diagId=11_2671

So can this be coded using NCS expert to disengage the eml for the secondary air flow or is this software something else?

e39 M5 - secondary air flow error trigging engine light

Just what I was looking for!! I was hoping when the limp wasn't connected it would trigger the light. I haven't gone digging hunger but from what I know I cannot hear the pump.
  6. Hey all, I have a UK spec E39 M5 and I have been monitoring it over the past few weeks where the engine light keeps coming on. The only error code in INPA is 170 secondary air flow. I have read loads about this and it seems to be a very common problem but I have read that this error does not trigger an engine light in the UK, however my one does. When I reset the light it will trigger the light in 4/5 cold starts. Has anyone come across this issue on a UK car? The car is running 100% and I am 100% sure the only code is 170 in INPA.

    E39 M5 timing chain tensioners

Thanks for the info all. There is no rattling and the car has an extensive service history. I am doing this as preventative maintenance. I might let it go another 5K miles before I do anything. Does anyone know where I can get the main tensioner and roughly the price?
